My parents were never taught proper dental hyigene so therefore I was never taught the proper hyigene plus I suffered from anxiety and depression and that combination has definitely led me to problems with my teeth but as a Mother myself I am DETERMINED to make my kids understand how important there dental hyigene is. I’ve been having my 3 year old watching all of your videos with me and telling him constantly that his dental health is directly related to his over all health. Up until recently to a few a years ago, without being told adequate information about caring for my teeth and quite possibly some flawed dentists, I began feeling stupid when I had to figure out everything ON MY OWN too late on why I had being getting enamel wear and even a root canal(one time at a dentist they said I had no cavities. A week later I experienced pain and they said that they may have known about the root canal...). My family has been assuming that it was low calcium from drinking almond milk more than regular milk, but I began to realize the many acidic foods and drinks that I’ve been having for years. Almost daily I’ve been drinking sodas, fizzy soda juices like San Pellegrino’s Arianciata and Limonata that my family used to get, many fruit juices, ice creams along with them sometimes, coffee daily(I only found out they stain your teeth after looking up when I could begin drinking it after my wisdom teeth got removed), sometimes sucking but at a few other points chewing ice cubes, and eating candies...And...I sometimes brushed to early, but now I also feel that I should’ve just stuck to always brushing twice a day. Only after experiencing the results the hard way, I learn on my own what I should’ve known then what I know now only through desperation of trying save my teeth from further damage. I’m now either avoiding almost all these foods and drinks or minimizing some of them when being made to consume being inevitable. Still the next challenge is trying to improve my brushing methods, particularly with not being not to hard and not soft even with a soft bristled toothbrush. It’s not easy for me even up to this day, I’m always worried about some of the sticky plaque using the gum lines and crevices to bypass even some of the thorough brush strokes that I sometimes have to carefully run the pointed end of a flosspick to check if any plaque particles are still there. Adequate brushing is a lot harder than you think...

The carbonated beverages are probably the single biggest problem. Usually they have phosphoric acid and other flavor enhances and are very acidic: they work great for cleaning mineral deposits off bathtubs and toilets, after all. Almonds are only bad in excess, as they have alot of mineral-binding oxalates. You can have great teeth and bones without eating dairy, you just have to eat things like greens, cruciferous vegetables, tofu and beans, seaweeds, and blackstrap molasses. I eat alot of collard greens because they are mild flavored and pair very well with foods like beans or potatoes, they are a good substitute for spinach in any recipe.

Also enamel can remineralises after acidic lemon/orange juices from the natural minerals in saliva so you still can have them and your enamel stays as strong as it is, plus after drinking soda don’t brush your teeth at least for 30 minuets because it can take off that enamel out

A lot of those foods I do eat. I don't eat pickles though, but I do eat pickled jalapenos. I had no idea about fermentable carbs either. I eat a few of those carbs sometimes, but not a lot. I especially love soda to, but I don't drink as much of that anymore. Great video. I had no idea those foods were bad for my teeth.

I quit drinking pop about a year and a half ago. Not only is it helping my teeth, but I just feel better as well. I was having some gastrointestinal issues that were clearly attributed to drinking pop. And I have a question, what about drinking unsweetened tea? Does it still effect your teeth in the same manner as sugared tea?

Most people eat those foods including me and I don't like the feeling they leave behind once they're chewed. Oh well, keep eating and brushing and wishing for the best when it comes to your teeth. They're supposed to last a lifetime, good luck with that. Note: I love your informative videos, they really enlighten me about tooth care. Working on having all my fillings replaced, I started a new hobby chewing on ice, and just like you said one tooth was cracked and has to be repaired. Great job.

As a companion to this video, it would be useful for people here to know 3-5 natural ways other than water and brushing to remove harmful bacterial or acids from the mouth. Some examples: xylitol, salt, baking soda and calcium carbonate.

Xylitol is good, but it's not a substitute for brushing or a mouthwash. Xylitol is more of a long-term oral hygene strategy to combat the dysbiosis that causes cavities and gum disease in the first place.

I am doing Invisalign so I can only have my trays out for 2 hours to eat. I usually eat twice a day (lunch/dinner), would it better to just string floss/water floss and use mouthwash after lunch as I can’t wait 30-60 minutes before brushing?

A few years back i was told i had a small cavity, and that it wouldn't need filling if i managed to stop it. Well i managed to stop it (remineralize i guess?) even though i was drinking tea every night eating a lot of carbs etc. I had a big habit of chewing sugar free xylitol gum and drinking water after every meal. I was so proud of myself cause growing up i always had cavities. 😅
