The Worst Feature of the Ford Maverick (and hybrid snow driving review)

Ғылым және технология

Someone wanted to see it running in snow! I also wanted to take this opportunity to go into the worst feature of the Ford Maverick. This applies to the hybrid or ICE version.

    Just don’t lift the wipers up.. If you’re remote starting the truck, the defrosters will unstick the wipers from the windshield pretty quickly. If you’re not remote starting the truck, you can usually just pull up on the wipers and let them smack back down a couple times to shake off any ice that’s accumulated.

    That works great in an inch or so of snow. On those six inch days having the blades up makes clearing the shield that much easier.

    I've driven in upper Midwest winters for over 30 years. There has not been one single time where I turned the wipers on when they were up. Never even crossed my mind to do so. Not a good idea to leave them up to begin with, since it stretches out the springs. Would much rather have this "issue" than the pop-out door handles many EVs are using, which are obviously designed by people who have never dealt with winter conditions. Those things are ridiculous.

There are vents in the windshield that direct warm air onto the blades to melt ice. If you run the truck for 10 min from remote start, the wipers are always unstuck by the time I get out unless it’s inches of snow.

    The immediate slamming down is called returning to the park position. This is NORMAL Putting the wipers up is not something Ford would recommend or expect an owner to do. The windshield may also get damaged if your raised wipers happen to slam down due to high winds. It is a case of "Doctor, it hurts when I hit my thumb with this hammer" Thumbs were not designed to be hit with a hammer. Hammers are meant to be used to drive nails. Use a windshield cover or, better yet, keep an ice scraper in the vehicle. Since the damage has already occurred and it is winter and touch up paint may not adhere well, dab a little Vaseline on the spot until the weather warms up.

    Leaving the wipers up is convenient but the loss of it isn’t the end of the world. You can have your wipers up or remote start but not both. The wiper spring isn’t designed for long term extension. They will stretch over time. There is a wiper park procedure in the manual that you’re not using and should be used if you’re leaving your wipers up. What you’re doing isn’t recommended. Read your manual. I’m sure the Maverick Hybrid handles like other FWD cars in the snow. Tires for both FWD and AWD make the difference. More so on the FWD as far as getting started and maintaining forward movement.

  • @IllInformedHuman

    @IllInformedHuman

    I assume you are talking about what the manual refers to as the "service position". They say to run the wipers while in accessory mode until they are in the middle of the windshield unless obstructed with snow and ice. For "wiper park" it states that the mode will be active whenever you switch on the side mirror heat. The only precautions for wipers are to leave them off when going through a car wash and to not run them on a dry windshield. It does not state that they cannot be left in the service position. It also does not bring up that you can leave them in service position, thus the debate. I will assume you don't actually own a maverick since you have clearly not READ YOUR MANUAL!

    Never leave your wiper blades fully up like that at any time on any vehicle, regardless if you can. The springs are not built for that and that's a gust of wind away from a broken windshield. Just leave them down. Lift them up, slightly, to clean the snow away in the cowl, so your windows don't fog, and then put them back in place. This way if your wipers are iced up, it'll give them a chance to get heat on them to melt. Use your defrost and A/C, together, if possible, as the A/C acts as a defogger if your vehicle doesn't have an auto defog feature. If you can't do both the A/C and defrost together, crack a window open a bit. This creates equal air pressure and can help clear your fogged up windows faster.
