    I agree, this is the worst gen for consoles easily. I thought last gen was bad but this is another level of bad and I dont see it getting any better in the future consoles. In fact I see it getting even worse.

    I think the main problem is how long it takes to create AAA games now. The PS3/360 era had so many games, with at least 10 big releases every year. Every franchise released a game every year. And everyone was happy with a Singleplayer being 15 hours long. Now we have to wait 6 years for a new game, development got super expensive because of the graphics, so they make the game bigger to excuse the higher price tag and just fill the game with stuff that distracts from the core experience.

    Not only that, but now every game is trying to be Skyrim, which is basically a "forever game" where people play the thing long after they've beaten it. It's not just graphics. Graphics are only a small part of it, and they're actually not that hard to create at higher fidelities. It's all the content that they throw in it. This is why many games have content that feels more like a chore to play, or where the games all just feel like a travel from A to B to listen to dialogue or swing a sword, and repeat. At least Nintendo is still trying to create some good games, even if their console is only half as powerful as a launch XBone.

    This is true to a degree. However, the problem isn't so much that we get less games per system, but that we can still play the newer games on the old systems. It proves that they are rushing the console generations rather than spending a few more years milking the old ones. What it comes down to is that fact that since games are taking longer to make, that it should also mean that console generation last longer than they used to.

    The Switch has outsold everything, comes out with constant awesome games, has the best indie scene, don't have to download 100gb when you first play the game, mem carts don't scratch, is portable etc etc etc. Switch 2 will be the ultimate.

    I'm so old, I can remember when games on a new console looked better than games on the old one. I've been a Playstation guy since 1996 and I have yet to see a single PS5 screen grab that gives me ANY motivation to buy it. If you handed me a free PS5, I'd sigh over having to move my existing library over to it.

  • @lo4tr
    @lo4trАй бұрын

    I think, ultimately what it proves, is that there wasn't enough of an 'upgrade' between systems this time around, since so many of the games can still be played relatively well on older hardware. It's also reached the point where you have to download data onto the systems now since the data (or at least a portion of it) is no longer on the games themselves. So, you are just buying a PC that is less powerful, less versatile, and more expensive over time. Rather than waiting for the prior generation to run its course, much like what the Switch is doing, the average person doesn't have a reason to want to upgrade their old Sony or Microsoft system.

    This generation has been out for what, like 5 years, and it feels like it's barely gotten started. For the past few generations, there's been this transitional period where any upcoming game would receive a proper next-gen version and a downgraded pastgen port so that anyone who didn't immediately shell out top dollar for the new Shitbox wouldn't feel completely left out in the cold (and so that the publishers could get a double-dip on the profits). But with so few true next-gen exclusives for PS5 and XSX, it feels like this transitional period never really ended. In 2007 alone (!), the 360 got Assassin's Creed, Bioshock, Lost Planet, Halo 3, Crackdown and Modern Warfare. How many next-gen exclusives worth a damn came out in 2021? And there's already rumors about the NEXT next generation ready to be unveiled? lmao, the second video game crash can't come soon enough.

    I'm doing fine cause i just ignore bad games, they do not exist. Just beat Selaco today and it was a great shooter, has a few balance issues, but is otherwise amazing in almost every way, with amazing AI, and the dev has said he intends to make it better, and even in Early access it has 30 levels in just chaper1, with chapter 2 and 3 coming for free later, +improvements, +mod support already baked in, +it's open source with no DRM. I am eating good, reject the noise, play good games, let the AAA rot into nothing.

    I agree, pretty much every enjoyable game I've played over the last couple of years has been indieshit. The thing is, you don't need nextgen graphex for any of it. Almost all of those games would play just fine on a PS3. All this processing capability, and they do nothing worthwhile with it.

    It takes way too long to develop new games, it costs way too much money, and because of this, companies are too risk averse to experiment and come up with something new. When the PS2 came out, experimentation was encouraged because the focus was on making games fun, which is why it has a library of over 4,000 games. You’d never see anything even close to that on a modern console.

    I don’t really agree with it being unnecessary to get a new console to play new games because there are last gen versions. A lot of games in the last 4 years run at a significantly poorer quality on last gen system: Cyberpunk and Elden Ring being some huge examples of this. Playing these games on a next gen console can really feel night and day. It’s nice there are still options for folks with older consoles, but next gen does offer noticeable improvements, especially with fluidity of higher FPS.

    I don't disagree with any argument presented here. This is absolutely the worst console generation and I've just about stopped playing Console games and only play PC now. However, I do still like consoles because all in all they are still cheaper. I only need a TV/monitor and a controller. Most decent PCs cost 500+ for the pc alone if you want one close in power to the console. Then you need a mouse, keyboard, and tv/monitor. So you're often paying more for the PC. Then if you have children like I do, you need multiple PCs because split screen isn't as widely used on pc, multiple copies of the same game because PC game sharing is lacking at best and space to fit multiple PCs because building those nice mini ITX computers isn't always viable because the cases alone are pretty expensive. At least with the Xbox you can have two consoles playing the same game at the same time as long as one is set to the home console and the other has the primary gamepass/gold account signed in. But to your point, yes I am paying more in the long run to have Gold, but since I do gamepass, I feel like it's a bit more worth it since my family can play so many games I couldn't otherwise afford to play and that includes me on PC when my kids aren't playing. Thanks for coming to my TED talk and great video. I look forward to comments pulling apart my argument. I'm sure I overlooked something. Have a great day.

    I'm kinda surprised to hear some people thought the previous gen was bad (outside of what MS offered, I mean). I can, with a straight face, say the PS4 was better than the PS3. Granted, saying this gen is bad because the previous gen is being supported still is not legitimate enough for me to consider a real reason. But this gen? Being that we're still relatively not too far into it (We're still comparing it to past gens that came and went), and that I've gotten a few really good games out of it so far, can't say it is the worst. Still would have to say it is the PS360 era that I'd say was the worst I've experienced. The ideal of "JRPG=Bad", the emergence of the brown and grey shooters, over-reliance of QTEs, the Red ring of death, the unfortunate case of the PS3 needing to be kneecapped in capabilities to make it financially viable, when online services needed to be charged (I'm not against merely *paying* for online services, mind you), PS3s difficulty in programming games for it biting Sony harder than the PS2, anti used game and anti singleplayer sentiment... probably some other stuff I've forgotten. Oh, the period when indies were really starting to take off but, for the most part, weren't really quite *there* yet. Not saying this gen is great, but I do like incorporating SSDs into a console's functionality rather than just having a console that can use SSDs. Also as a person who has dabbled into PC gaming over the years whenever I see someone say PCs are better than consoles in every way I just kinda shake my head because it certainly has not been that way for me. I'm not willing to go as far as I would go all or nothing in either side but at least with consoles I have less issue pertaining to playing games (which include trying to find solutions to my issues and not finding them. This has happened multiple times), or worried about my PC being unable to adequately run certain games, an issue I don't have on console most times. Also, I'm not someone who has thrown away the concept of having physical copies of games. I would also rather have a separate console for whenever I record stuff, since it's more convenient for me to do so over setting up my PC to do it. As far as price goes, saying PC is absolutely cheaper is kinda obscuring some things about the costs of PCs. It *can* be cheaper than consoles, but you *can* also easily spend more than twice as much on a PC as you would on a console for a decent midranged option.

    As a PC and Switch gamer it's not that bad, i'm digging it. Elden Ring is awesome, Zelda is awesome i'm quite happy, people really need to stop dubbing this a "console crisis" and call it more of a Sony/Xbox crisis, or really the slow death of third party AAA game development which these two were relying on to be the main producers system seller games. Paying $500 for slightly better shading and lesser load times is passé, nobody cares about such minor improvements enough to dump $500 on new hardware for it, the AAA console companies really need to go back to the drawing board and figure out what people actually want, as someone who started on the PS1 i'm STILL waiting for the generational leap from the PS3 era lol, it's all just minor improvements nowadays and you still expect me to dump hundreds of dollars on a new brick? Maybe the time we get to the PS8 and i can get enough minor improvements that combine into a single generational leap, otherwise i don't really care, the only people who care THAT much about graphical fidelity and 4k whatever are PC gamers and PC gamers won't buy consoles to begin with

    Nobody really cares, it's about software, the Switch and the PC have it, the PS5 does not, nobody cares about Miles Morales Spider Man or a remake of Demons Souls when we got Elden Ring on PC and literally every action game made since the 2000s lol and the Final Fantasy 7 game is only a timed exclusive and probably the last of it's kind since Square was forced to admit it underperformed in sales because of the timed exclusivity. The Switch can be emulated by some phones but it's also cheaper than some phones, comes with a controller and the battery lasts longer so yeah. The upgrade to an SSD is "game changing" for consoles perhaps but i've had SSDs on PC for years now, it's not new tech and tbh it's again a minor thing, nobody was ever really that bothered by load times, we always had them, developers found cool ways around them. Its not a big enough deal for anyone to dump $500 on new hardware, same as the shading.
