@@pauldunn5978 Thanks for the info 🙂I must confess, I don't know much about it.
The owner was an incompetent and a drunk. I worked for a specialty insurer at the time and we had just completed a rating system specifically for ballooning. Very hard to find companies to write insurance for them in general, but when this happened we had to go back and make a lot of changes. Thanks to Lamont for a terrific and respectful presentation.

One poor woman was heard screaming OH MY GOD I'M GONNA DIE
Back in 1989 there was a ballooning disaster in central Australia that killed 13. For a long time it was the world's worst ballooning tragedy. One thing that sticks in my mind is hearing how one of the deceased had sent a postcard to a loved one before the accident. They only wrote "ah, this is the life!". No idea their life was soon to end in a horrible way.

Unfortunately, this is not the only fatal accident involving a balloon. RIP to all these poor souls who were so cruelly taken from their lives.

I live in Central Texas. Thanks for covering this Lamont. All-too-often many of these stories go by the wayside. Ironically I was just thinking about this the other day. I remember when I heard it I was shocked and dismayed because of I had friends who have gone down there to ride in these things. When I heard how many people were in the basket I thought 17 was excessive. It's horrific the fire that they burned alive. That is tragic I did not even know that.
Is it just me or does the owner/operator look about 10 Vicodins deep and sweating like crazy in that picture at the end of the video?

I'd NEVER fly in one of those death traps. There's no regulations governing their flights! That's a scary thought. Most people that do these flights don't know that. Any time a company asks you to sign a form saying you understand the dangers and won't sue. Don't walk, run! I own horses. I knowingly take that risk to ride. Which I love to do. I would NEVER have someone pay to ride and on top of it ask them to sign papers like that! Because, It takes years to learn the risks. I've torn my rotator cuff, broke an ankle, and broke three vertebrae in my lower back. I still choose to ride. That's not for everybody! 😊😊😊😊😊

I have personally witnessed so many incompetent people at the helm of almost every type of transportation that exists. There are more good than bad operators but it only takes one to mess up the lives for a bunch of people. This is why public and personal transportation is mainly not for me. Same goes for computer run systems. Most of us should be in control of our own transportation needs. If I listed all the incompetent situations I personally witnessed, the public would be astonished. Some of most idiotic things witnessed were without a doubt human errors.
