Everton are steeped in history with many innovative breakthroughs, they were also the 1st team in the country to have underground heating installed in 1958. It will be a very sad day when the Grand Old Lady has to close her gates for the very last time but needs must in the modern day game of football & I think the new super stadium on the banks of the Royal Blue Mersey will do her proud.

Pretty sure that it would never justify new 40k stadiums for each team, but a shared one of 25-30k may just be the solution to demolishing the historic old ground? St James’ Park first match was in 1800. The ground had stands then. This predates Goodison Park. Everton are older than The Magpies, but the ground certainly isn’t.
Cathkin Park in Glasgow is the site of the 2nd Hampden Park. Purpose built as a football stadium complete with terraced stands and opened in 1884. It was home to Queen's Park first of all and later Third Lanark. Also temporarily Ranges at one point. It hasn't been in use for football since the demise of Third Lanark as a football club in the 1960s, however, but can still be visited as a historical site. Just one example of an older purpose built football stadium than Goodison Park and there are others. Everton left Anfield as the chairman was attempting to gain control of the club. Rent was a side issue. The catalyst was when the adjacent landowner, friend of the chairman, wanted to run a parallel access road through Everton's new main stand. The chairman, who bought the land from the adjacent landowner while Everton were occuppying it, became Everton's landlord. He had that in the agreement of *his* land purchase a road could run across the land he rented to Everton. Everton being the renter were not privy to this agreement with it being unbeknown to the Everton committee. It was seen as a deliberate lever to gain control of the club. The committee decided to leave and build their own ground in which they had control.
