The World War II battle against STDs

Not all of World War II’s battles were public. Venereal disease was a major front in the war.
Subscribe to our channel! goo.gl/0bsAjO
Venereal disease has long been an issue for militaries, but during World War II, the problem became bigger and more global. That required unusual tactics and unorthodox strategies to beat syphilis and gonorrhea during the war. In this episode of Vox Almanac, Phil Edwards explores some of the ways the United States military fought this epidemic.
Starting with Bousbir in Casablanca, it’s a tour of the uneasy relationship the military had with prostitution, recreational sex, and the venereal diseases that soldiers contracted. Both in America and around the world, it was a significant problem that resulted in health troubles and days lost on the battlefield.

Additional remarkable story: In Honolulu, Hawaii, prostitution was illegal before World War II but was secretly supported and condoned by the Honolulu Police Department, mostly because there already were huge numbers of military men present. When the war began on Dec. 7, 1941, the military took over the civilian government as a dictatorship, and continued to run the many brothels by shipping prostitutes to and from the Hawaiian Islands from the US mainland. The whorehouses functioned openly in downtown Honolulu with men standing in lines on the sidewalks in the midst of residents who were working and shopping, and everyone knew what they were there for. It was blatantly out in the open. There finally was enough of an outcry that the whorehouses were shut down in Sept. 1944. Of course this didn't end prostitution; the women just dispersed to other locations. But the point is that the US Army and Navy were, in fact, actively running prostitution during this time period.

Comfort women were women and young girls ( some as young as 9!) that were taken from their villages in places like Sri Lanka, China, Japan, etc to unmarked houses (sometimes ones designated for this purpose others abandoned ones) specifically for the purpose of providing "Comfort" to Japanese soldiers. They had NO say in this, some were never able to be re-united with their families afterwards, some even died there under brutal conditions (I mean over and above the obvious sex-trafficking), some attempted suicide, some succeeded at it. There was a whole documentary done on it that aired on TVO last year. The survivors are still awaiting justice in the form of their governments even admitting that it happened!!

To remind us that even if we heard someone do it better one time.. ptove it and stop saying it was your uncle and just BE fkn impressed ! :) its the most infuriating and damning personal trait hehe. So this joke is used to underline that how lame it is to compare someone recent work to an all time master and going, meh, not as hood as... my uncle Einar :) Just so you know your language is broken probably if his sentence we are replying to.. It was unequivocally a crime against humanity and a national disgrace. However, this Vox video is concentrating on the campaign in the military. Horribly ironic that while black men were being trained for air warfare overseas that civilians were being used as test subjects in their same community.

I thought about this too. According to some online sources the story about the experiment didn't break until the early 1970s. So it wouldn't be in the realm of common knowledge at the time. At least that's why I'm assuming it was mentioned in this particular video.

I have a New Zealand doe (she's black, not white though) and of the 4 rabbits we have, she is one of the most sweet and affectionate. She is the only one of the four who will actually sit on my lap for pets and snuggles - the others are too busy and won't sit still for long. I know they are primarily bred as meat rabbits - and I can see why, she's a big bun! - but as far as my experience goes with the breed, they seem very calm and sweet tempered! I hope those test rabbits had a good retirement at least, for payment for their service. Though, I'm not holding my breath.

IF allies behave less than gentlemen in freed territories I must blame theyre leadership and possibly convict them for the crimes of those who must obey them.. and for totally wasting one of the best opportunities in history to be well regarded and give mankind a moarlity boost... Many years ago I read Colonel Charles Codman's memoir DRIVE about his time as General Patton's aide. If I recall correctly, he commented on the Casablanca Conference and FDR and Churchill's disappointment at the red light district of the city. It didn't live up to the movie, but was off-limits to the GIs by then anyway. I also remember an article I read when I was in the Air Force about how we nearly lost the war in 1942 or 43 because of an order requiring punishment of any troops who got VD. As a result the rates skyrocketed because the men were afraid to get treatment. This idiotic order was quickly rescinded and replaced with one threatening punishment of any soldier who did not seek treatment. My Dad had to watch the VD warning films when went in the service in 1948, but by the time I entered in the 70s, they no longer showed them. God bless modern medicine.
