Way before Thrasher I think. I remember a kit(?) for attaching separate blades instead of wheels to trucks for skating on ice in the 1970's. Probably in Skateboarder Magazine circa 76/77/78? Remember Windskating? A lot of these offshoots were around quite early. Dirtboarding also.

That was entertaining. It makes me wonder what the board would be like if it actually had edges like real skates. The blades would have to be thicker and less pliable of course, but in theory it should boost maneuverability and traction. One thing I noticed is that almost every time you fell your weight was not centered under your hips. With reduced traction, it's even more important to keep track of your center of gravity because you can't rely as heavily on minor adjustments you'd make by pushing off with your feet. I have experience with figure skating in particular, but I'm not ever remotely an expert when it comes to skateboarding. I'm just making educated guesses about what I see and know. Do with this what you will.

We made ice board trucks with old metal hockey blades cut in half for each truck. So they actually turned proper. We also used these drummer slip over studded grips on our push foot sneakers. A bit crunchy on the grip...

I remember both metal blades in place of each wheel and plastic "sleds" for the front and back trucks back in the 70s. Xtreme Ice Blades are currently a thing. There is a video of a guy riding a Blade Board on a bobsled track in Latvia.

I think you should do this again with cleats on your feet so you can get more traction with the board and then go faster on it that way if you're able to run on the ice

Funny, my son, who is a figure skater and skateboarder, and I were JUST talking about this and trying to design our own conceptual ice skateboard. We would make it have just one long special blade along the middle (with edges) or four little kid hockey blades mounted like wheels. Then we were thinking "What kind of shoes would work?" Ice grips would be too weird for skateboarding but maybe curling shoes would work. Lastly, we thought it made the most sense to skate it on pond ice not ice rink ice because you could set up a snow bank to 'drop in' :)
