That is the prettiest pedal ever made. Nobody will be able to match it. If there was a medal awarded for the nicest pedal, you would (and should) be on the podium to receive it. (But, I'll bet mine works as well as yours. :-) )

Good morning! I just reverse engineered the factory pedal and used the same value potentiometer. If you don’t have a pedal you can copy, you can find the wiring diagrams for most popular machines on SSC’s site here. ssccontrols.com/tig-welding-controls/c-series-tig-pedals/ Click on the info sheet on the right and it will take you to the wiring diagram for the pedal. 😊👍

@@PranaTech I’ve been looking around for specs on the potentiometer used in the RFCS-5HD pedal for my syncrowave 300 (transformer type), but have only come up with the Miller part #195218. This won’t deter me though, I’ll build it with the Miller potentiometer if necessary. If my potentiometer is something other than a 10k ohm unit, like yours, would this change mean there is a different preferred capacitor other than the one you listed in your description? I really appreciate your efforts in publishing this video, you’ve inspired me to take on a ‘diy’ tig torch cooler project after this.

Hi Eric, the capacitor will be the same with any value potentiometer. It is only there to stabilize the signal. Your potentiometer in the Miller pedal should be marked with the ohm value on the back of it. I actually purchased my potentiometer from SSC pedals. They use a really high quality unit that I couldn’t find out on the market. It also has a long shaft which is hard to find. I have one of their pedals and I told them I wanted to convert it to fit my other welder. They were very nice guys to deal with and they sold it to me for about $22 plus shipping. 😊👍

Hi Don, Great video and awesome result!! I'm designing a pedal too and I have a question: if you've used the 10mm diameter wheel, that has 31mm circumference. The pot has a limitation of 3/4 travel so you'd have 23mm travel of the belt. Does it give you enough resolution? Wouldn't a bigger wheel like a 20mm be better? I'm new to all this, never used a TIG yet so please take it with a grain of salt..

Hey, glad to see someone else crazy enough to build their own pedal too! Ok, so the 30 tooth GT2 pulley that I used is 10mm wide not the diameter. The diameter is 18.6mm which works out to 58.4mm circumference. This gave me lots of resolution. My commercial pedal only had about 26-28mm of travel so my new pedal gave me about 43mm of travel and much finer control over my arc. Little variations in my foot movement don’t translate to the weld with this much resolution. Since I had so much travel to play with, I simply set the pulley on the pot shaft at the furthest downward travel point and then adjusted the return stop screw on the actuator bar to match the amount of travel for the pot. I hope that makes sense. Feel free to ask me all the questions you need.😊👍

Hi there! Yes, it has full travel. That was the hardest part, getting the diameter of the pulley and the pedal travel so that I got the full travel. Otherwise you don’t get the full amps of your welder.😁👍

Hi Dong, yes you have to make an adapter with a 7 pin female GX20 plug to a 5 pin GX16 male plug to fit the Yeswelder Tig. I am going to make a video soon showing how to do it. I have a diagram showing the wiring schematic to do the conversion if you want to do it before I get the video done. Just let me know. 👍😁

Thanks - Well done video! I see the SSC company 5-pin pedal is about 200 dollars (Yipes!) and is probably very good, but yours is likely way smoother - and I love the limit switch. May I ask what you spent in materials? The welder I would use this for is Yeswelder 250P.

I like my Nova pedal too but my pedal is smoother with a larger range of motion so I can have a finer control over my amperage especially with small parts and thin aluminum. 😊

Alas, I may have waited too long. Only now getting around to clicking through the parts, it will cost far more to build (more than Yeswelder's current foot pedal offering -- which by the way, some reviewers say does not work, I suspect because those folks did not follow the boot/wakeup instruction). I'm an occassional welder and I know yours is far superior, but should I consider the one from YW if I'm on a budget (well, okay, cheap). Do you recall whether the YW foot pedal operates pretty smoothly? Thanks again!!

The pedal is a great pedal that they are selling now. The early one was not very good, but the new one is very smooth and works perfectly. Many people fail because they don’t know that the pedal must be pressed for 5 seconds to tell the welder that a pedal is connected. If they don’t know this and don’t activate it, they then think the pedal is defective. If I was in your position, I would buy the YesWelder pedal.👍😊

Hi there, yes, the pot that I used is the same value as the pedal that came with my Tig. Most modern Tigs use a pot that is somewhere between 10k to 55k from what I’ve seen. 👍😀

Hi Michael, I sharpen mine on my belt sander. I hold the tungsten upright so the grind marks are linear to the tungsten from the thicker part to the point. 😁👍

Hi Don! Thanks for your kind words! That’s probably the only pedal that I’ll ever build. I had 40-50 hours of work in that pedal and it was really more about me seeing if I could really build one. I would have to charge thousands of dollars for one and the commercially available ones are almost as good as mine, although not as smooth and fancy. Thanks for your interest though. 😊👍

Hi Tyler! The actual pot that I used is from SSC pedals. It is an industrial grade potentiometer that is rated at 1 million actuations before wearing out. I just called them and asked them if they would sell me just the pot for AHP welders so I could swap out the one in a pedal of theirs that I had which was for an Everlast welder. The agreed and sold it to me for like $32 including shipping. I ended up selling the pedal and decided to build my own so I used the pot in the pedal project. The reality is that any long shaft 10k potentiometer would work, or you could try my way and call SSC or Nova and see if they will sell you one of theirs. The potentiometer is a 1 rotation unit. I think the length was 1.5” 👍😊

Hi Rimon! Great question! My AHP welder came with a pedal that used a linear pot and I thought it was definitely a simpler design. I could not find a higher quality linear potentiometer that was comparable to the one I got. It is rated at 1 million cycles and since I built this for life, I wanted to use a higher quality pot so it would be smoother and not need to be replaced ever. Probably overkill I know.😁👍

Hi Terrence! Ok, so neither of my factory pedals that I tore down had the capacitors on the pot lines. I have a custom Nova pedal and they use the caps on theirs, so I just copied their setup. What welder are you making your pedal for?

Same as yours, yeswelder 250p. This is the pot I'm using, 404R10KL1.0 The goal was to get away from the rotating potentiometer and use a linear one. I saw this pot in a Hobart EZ-Take pedal

Hi Terrence, ok that pot looks like a good one. One problem that I realized was that I never put my drawing for the actual pinouts for the Yeswelder pedal. The schematic in the Yeswelder manual was wrong. I had to meter the actual outputs of my pedal to determine what they really were. It's a stick welder with a add on DC converter so it can weld AC and DC and a arc pig HF start and a tig torch basically something I put together with some stuff I already had but it's a old 295 amp.
