THE WORLD'S FASTEST SHOTGUN! The Story of the Tyrrell Lead Shot Controversy

Спорт

In 1984, Tyrrell was the only team not to run a turbo engine, and had to resort to some lengths to make sure the car was up to weight, so decided to weigh the cars down using lead shot.
While they did to something many illegal, it's thought that the FIA changed the charges and did some other things as an excuse to get rid of Tyrrell so they could push through new laws for the turbo cars.
So how did Tyrrell do it? let's have a look.
Enjoy! And remember to like and subscribe for more!

Theres a great cheating story with lead shot from Nascar in the 70’s. The crew chief filled the chassis rails with lead shot and sealed the hole with wax. When the race started and everything got hot the wax melted releasing the lead shot. The hilarious part is this hole in the chassis rails was at the jacking points so when the scrutineers inspected the car they covered the holes and never caught them.

I remember reading Brundle's recollections of that time and being rightfully bitter about the whole experience. He still has the podium trophy, he has the screws in his ankle and all to say that his season didn't exist. If anything I'd have been more bitter about the whole scenario. The 80s were great for innovation but they showcased some of the worst of F1's politics.

Hey Aidan, Probably something you could talk about is Phillipe Bugalski and the Xsara F2 kit car beating the WRC cars across multiple asphalt rallies in 1999! This is literally like an F2 car winning against F1 cars and nobody even wants to talk about this incredible story... (most likely because the FIA was so embarassed by it, they are still trying to cover it up to this day) it would be awesome to see you talk about this! The F2 kit cars are 20+ year old rally cars that are faster than modern wrc cars even to this day, as proven by Sebastien Loeb racing a 306 maxi kit car in a regional rally and leading against a hyundai i20 (2019 spec) wrc car until his car had engine troubles. These f2 kit cars were insane!

1:32 I recently had the same thought due to a post. I always heard it was 1200 bhp, now I'm starting to read 1500 bhp. So, I started to dig a little bit, and apparently this comes from a quote by Paul Rosche, the designer, who said "It must have been about 1,400 bhp, but we don't know the exact figure since our engine dynamometer didn't go beyond 1280 bhp." However, I can't find any original source for that (probably because it'll be in German). Both Bergher and Marc Surer have made the same 1400 bhp claim, the latter stating “Paul Rosche told me years later, when I said ‘we had about 1,200 horsepower’ he said ‘Marc, I have to tell you, it was 1,400…”. But the figure still comes from a calculation, and all we can ceirtainly know is that it was 1280+ bhp, if they were being truthful to begin with. In the display at BMW's museum (2:10) the power figure displayed is "630 - 790 PS". It may be worth an episode, the myth about the power figures of the 80s turbo era.

Back then a lot of the technologies were immature and far from developed. So anything new seemed like a big deal as most folks hadn't heard of it. Now, we have some extremely mature tech and a ton of information available through years of development and the human knowledge base known as the internet. "New" no longer feels new as we have information on it already. It's pretty hard to invent something that feels 100% new. Let alone something that's 1. Legal, 2. Safe.

Lead shot was quite popular in NASCAR in the 70's and early 80's. Former driver Darrell Waltrip said the cars were weighed before the races and not after, so a lot of drivers would let the lead shot out and the banking would cause it to all go off the track on the apron. Apparently the hole to release the lead was where the jack would go. That way when tech would check out the car on jacks, the hole was covered.

So as I recall (yes I’m old) a couple of things I read at the time about the water found on the tarmac of the Tryell pit it was reported to not have been just “chemicals” found in the liquid tested but the chemicals found in the liquid was in fact (alleged) nitromethane. This whole story about the water being used to spray onto the intake runners or tract to lower the temp to help create a denser air fuel mixture and make more power sounds plausible and the lead shot for ballast ok sounds reasonable enough but again as I recall it was reported the sprinkler system used to spray the “water” onto the intake track was actually spraying the nitromethane into the intake system thus creating more Power. Watching the races that season and as it progressed the Tryells seemed to be better able To hang onto the turbo cars at the beginning of the races but as the race progressed and the pit stop for tires happened the Tyrells seemed to lose pace. Again as you pointed out as the water tank was refilled or “rinsed” during the pit stop the thought was to purge any remnants of the nitromethane. So while one could look at this and brow beat Tryell for cheating this also casts shade on the engine supplier Cosworth as Tyrell had a customer agreement with Cosworth meaning Tyrell only leased the engines from Cosworth and as the engines would be sent back to Cosworth for rebuilding l, with the increase in heat and power created by the addition of the nitromethane discoloration etc Cosworth would have had to know something was different which makes them complicit. I would also add the comment I read about where the “water” and lead shot were pumped into the car, the pic I saw on the side of the car the pressure plate looked to be stainless or a polished aluminum. Whatever it was made of it looked like a golf ball from being hit by the lead shot as it was put into the car under significant pressure which makes sense if your goal was to rinse away any residual…… thanks for posting the vid

I started watching F1 during the period of Tyrell's somewhat lamented death spural (Murray & Hunt never seemed particularly fond of the team), and I remember Ken Tyrell's leaving as a bit of a damp squib, especially compared to the way the Williams family were lauded out of the door as they were forced to give up after years of similar clinging-on-by-their-financial-fingertips. Anyway, I'd completely missed the fact that the Tyrell team is now on top of the world, winning 8 consecutive world championships! Tyrell -> BAR -> Honda -> Brawn -> Mercedes should be etched on the executive restroom mirror of every team boss and potential F1 investor. Minnows can win, it'll just take 15 years and many, many casualties along the way, not to mention a few genius engineers and a rule change or two.

4:56 You make it sound like the teams illegally altered the weight (total mass) of the car by adding water ballast during or after the race. The practice of topping up liquids that had (during the race) been wasted was only done after the race (why would you add it during and make the car heavier?) and was completely within the rules. The dodgy part was claiming that there was even such a thing as water cooled brakes. The 20kg (IIRC) of ballast never did a jot of brake cooling as it was all jettisoned within the first lap or two.

Its just more interesting to watch, and it's like everyone using the "meta" car in Forza. Think outside the box engineers, and if the opsitition doesn't like it it's thier problem.

  • @rexthewolf3149

Here’s the thing I don’t think you get the full implication of your metaphor. The reason why In games people eventually stat to use what is “meta” is the idea of Dominant Strategy. Use what has been proven to work rather than trying to reinvent the wheel. Same goes for Motorsport. And even if they did allow greater variety eventually everyone would start to copy what was the most successful design. Someone will find the most efficient car design.

  • @ViperPilot16

@@rexthewolf3149 If no one is aloud to inovate in anyway then there will be no break throughs, or whacky but effective designs. The only reason I brought up the idea of something being meta is because that's basically what auto racing has turned into. Everyone found the most efficient setup, and turned the race into who has the best variation of that setup (excuding the driver). I won't speak for you, while that can be fun, it's just not anymore. You can only watch nearly identical copys of the same car go around the track so many times before they blend together. Racing to me has always been about the more noticeable things, like the team has a bigger engine so the kill it on the strait aways, but struggles in corners because that car is also large. Opposed to this team also kills it in the strait aways, because their engine has a better computer. Variety is the spice of life.

Was there something about the legendary woodsman, Ken Tyrell that caused such animus? His arc through F1 has all the appearances of a person who, for whatever reason, just didn't fit in. That he would be so successful during the Stewart years only to slowly decline after indicates that either he didn't play well with others or that the "F1 Circus" looked down on him. Either way they clearly cut him "no slack" (as we Yanks like to say), eventually running him out of the paddock. Thoughts?

The main reason to add lead is to boost the octane rating and prevent knock. Protecting the valve seats is a fringe benefit, especially since you have to use valve seat inserts anyway if you want to run an aluminium head. Side note: You can't just add lead to fuel: if you did, deposits of lead oxide would quickly form inside the engine and gum everything up. Something else is needed to clean up the lead and carry it out the exhaust, in practice this was usually bromine and chlorine (in the form of dibromoethane and dichloroethane). Unfortunately, when these compounds burn they form strong acids that contaminate the engine oil and attack the exhaust valves. This is part of the reason why old cars running leaded fuel needed very frequent oil changes, and engines that ran hot and hard (like WW2 aircraft engines) needed frequent valve replacements.

  • @nerd1000ify

    @nerd1000ify

    2 жыл бұрын

@@gatorred157 Funnily enough, they add the ethanol in part because it's also an octane booster. I'm in Australia, standard fuel here is 91 RON (about the same as US 87 octane fuel, you guys use a different system that gives lower numbers) but when they put 10% ethanol in it goes up to 94 RON and the cost decreases by a couple of cents per litre. Great for cars that prefer premium fuel because it's way cheaper than 95 or 98 octane premium, but only if they can handle it! Problem is, most pre-ethanol engines use seals and hoses made of Buna-N rubber, same as those blue plastic medical gloves. The stuff resists water, oil or fuel, but not alcohol! So the E10 fuel eats through your seals and hoses. Add to that all the stuff with water absorption, and it's a big problem, especially for boats. Nobody here uses E10 in their boat, we all run the regular ethanol free 91, or ethanol free premium if the engine has been tuned and needs a higher octane rating. A lot of people think it's more environmentally friendly to use ethanol, but in most cases the CO2 from growing the corn, fermenting it and purifying the ethanol means that running E10 probably emits slightly more CO2 than regular fuel. The only benefit is slightly less toxic emissions from the tailpipe (not a bad thing) and that cheap octane boost. E85 here is very rare, it's only sold at a few service stations and is used almost exclusively for motorsport. 85% ethanol boosts octane even more, plus the alcohol has a strong charge cooling effect that is very beneficial to a race engine (you make more power!. But the fuel economy is drastically reduced because the energy per litre is so much lower.
