The World’s Best Blind Mountain Biker
Anyone who rides a mountain bike on downhill terrain knows how perilous it can be. Well, imagine riding downhill without being able to see. Brian Bushway is a pro at it. Known as the world’s best blind mountain biker, he lost his sight when he was 14. Wanting to discover alternative ways to explore the world, Bushway learned how to see with sound. Like bats, he relies on echolocation when he mountain bikes, using sound to locate objects.

Navigating solely by echolocation is really hard in unfamiliar territories or at a high speed, like with biking. Brian is amazing that he can do this!

I was expecting from the title of the video they'd focus a bit more on his riding. People going blind and relearning how to engage the world are a dime a dozen (no offense to Brian). I'm assuming access roads and fire trails and low level obstacle closed track and not 15-20 mph technical trails or downhill. I seriously doubt his echo location is so fine tuned that he's able to visualize a tight/ narrow trail throuigh the woods with sharp turns and constantly changing terrain.

Here is a qualified example of a proper report showcasing someone riding a bike using echo location: kzread.info/dash/bejne/jJN5ldyxqJXSaco.html (this guy is doing it on the steet - and I'm not questioning Brian's process to go off-road if that is in fact what he is doing); but riding a mountain bike on the street or in areas where there are minimal obstacles does not make one a mountain biker just like if my grandma got onto a skateboard tomorrow - that doesn't make her a skateboarder - that only means she rode a skateboard.
@uberfu

AND here is an actual video showcasing Brian actually hitting high speed and taking on huge obstacles in a better report than this garbage video (which also showcases BNrian meeting Daniel and being inspired to get back on his bike): kzread.info/dash/bejne/enxnsqeTn6a_qZM.html. ANyone can slap a video on YT - learn how to provide decent content that properly reflects the subject in the title instead of click-baiting viewers.

I haven’t watched this video yet but I already know it’s amazing!
This guys is rad! Love that he teaches it. I’d love to learn it myself while having sight. I’ve done this to a degree my whole life in pitch black places I’m unfamiliar with like a hotel room. Just one or two to hear the walls but obviously nothing to a tiny fraction of this degree. I wonder how much of our ‘sight’ is attributed to unconscious mapping of sound. I do feel like I can’t see as well in a sense with noise canceling headphones on.

I think having normal vision actually makes it harder to learn. It's too easy to cheat! Blind people don't have that option.

Amazing
I'm not blind but I've been trying on occasion to "see" if I could do it to by just keeping the lights off around the house. It's pretty hard so I can't imagine having to mountain bike through it alone.
His not totally blind. He is totally cool.
Finally a good video
I worked with a guy at a tech company circa 1996 who used echo location and mouth clicking to ride a bike. Actually, he and his twin brother were both blind and had been doing it for years, albeit not mountain biking, which obviously adds an extra level of complexity.

His ability to echolocation is mind blowing... I had seen some people using clicking sounds to navigate the world but not on a mountain bike down hill at that speed. This story makes me think that's possible to create a device that maximise this ability and make it easily accessible to all the population with a similar condition regardless of the is skill level

AT THAT SPEED - What speed?? - they didn't show him tearing up any MTB trail or track. They showed him on an MTB on the road and on what looked like a closed circuit track (likely one he's familiar with and mostly memorized) not going fast at all.
I need to see more footage of this guy on trails. Also, echolocation in humans? Physiology anyone?

So what function does the sound making zip tie do? Does it give rhytm? I don't quite understand.
@jokuvaan5175
5 жыл бұрын
It makes sound which bounces of from objects around the bike so he can "see" them. It works like the ping of a sonar. He also makes sound with his mouth but I guess adding the zip tie to the bike makes the ping more constant.

Wow so that’s a thing
Everything functions properly kzread.infoUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Nothing was damaged in the box aside from a decal on the fork. The decal was missing a piece of a corner but I ended up peeling them off anyways. Assembly is easy BUT make sure you tune up the derailleurs. Both the front and rear need adjusting. I'd advise going to a bike shop but I opted out and put in 10+ hours with the help of KZread. Ended up fraying a shifter cable but all in all I learned from the experience. The Brakes work well but the front caliper needs adjusting or at least mine did because the rotor was rubbing against the pads. Make sure you swap out the seat, grips, and pedals. For the short run you'll be fine though. I've read that this bike isn't built yet for hard trails but I just need it for the city. PA has some of the worst roads and being in a mountain this was a great choice. Worth the investment!
Why don’t s the logo purple not red?
