I was writing a character who let herself get experimented on so she could earn money for her daughter. One incident melts her into a pile of black sludge, and it remains lifeless until it's dumped into a landfill. Consciousness returns to the sludge as it tries to reincoporate itself, failing over and over, but somehow finding the strength to stand once more. It was about the point where I referenced the MC's love for her daughter that I pushed my chair back, grabbed my head, and yelled "FUCK FUCK FUCK I JUST REMADE SANDMAN AGAIN GOD DAMMIT"

Same! I loved this trilogy when it came out, and I especially connected with the third film. I thought the concept was really neat and not to mention relatable. Since then I've heard so many people say they hated this movie and it's the worst Spider-Man film and a stain on the franchise. And me being the pushover I am, have just thought "okay, I'm sure you know more about movies than I do, so I'll trust your opinion", but I've never really let the love go. It's been, and I don't like using this term, a guilty pleasure of sorts that I just attributed to having bad taste in movies. Which I kind of used to have back then, but this was the one thing I wouldn't change my mind about.

Spider-Man 3 is the best movie we could have gotten given how many hoops Raimi had to jump through to satisfy the studio's demands. Spider-Man 1 and 2 give audiences the reassurance that everything will be okay in the end, but 3 is more confrontational. I still stand by the idea that these are character dramas first and superhero flicks second. So glad people are coming around to seeing their greatness all these years later

100%. The central theme of forgiveness is beyond powerful here. For any relationship, platonic or not, to last, forgiveness is essential. That is hammered in so much here, and the whole trilogy proudly wears its heart on its sleeve. It’s so unabashedly human and sincere, which is why this whole trilogy works so well and still holds up. I truly liken this trilogy to the dark knight trilogy, where every installment is good. The third might be the “worst” in the trilogy, but it’s by no means a bad film.

The birth of sandman is utterly beautiful, and Peter's story is actually really well told imo.

Joel Haver is a film genius and the fact that I share the same opinion on Spider-Man 3 means that I’m also a film genius. I’ve been saying the same thing about how Peter’s emo shtick is essentially the manifestation of his “bad” side, so of course it’s corny because he doesn’t have that much of a dark side to bring out. In the comics, there’s a reason why Peter with the Venom suit isn’t as bad as when it takes over other people like Eddie Brock. Even the concept of Carnage was “what if Venom took over someone who was already a bad guy”, so they came up with a new symbiot and gave him to a serial killer. I absolutely loved Spider-Man 3 when I first saw it, and loved how campy it is. For me, it perfectly captured the tone of a lot of comic books from the 90s, which is what I grew up on. I was stunned when I found out people hated it and thought it was bad.

  • @glenis83

I love the scene where Ursula brings Peter a piece of cake. For one, it’s just such a sweet gesture and a much needed moment of pause. It wasn’t until I saw it again in theaters where I thought, she really didn’t have to do that. Plot wise, there’s no pep talk for Peter to inspire him. There’s no dialogue at all, just the sharing of a dessert together. There are these wonderful little heroic gestures sprinkled throughout the trilogy that have nothing to do with big action. I think MJ taking Peter’s hand in the last scene of Spider-man 3 is one of my favorite moments in any superhero movie. True vulnerability and true forgiveness, just what a way to end the series.

  • @ColombianThunder

Personally i actually feel the same way about 2 the way you feel about how 3 reflects on your life a bit. Going into adulthood, family responsibilities, dealing with adhd/depression, etc, i really resonated with struggling to maintain and show up for friendships and relationships. I think 2 is such a great metaphor for struggling with depression, and it's so powerful to me, especially for what it is. I also agree about the last shot of the movie. I still think about it all these years later. All of the previous movies on him swinging out to save the day, but this one ends on a tentative attempt at reconnection. It always stuck out to me. It's a bold way to end a superhero movie.

So glad you highlighted that proposal scene, it always stuck with me even before I really was able to grasp the gravity of it. As a kid I always remembered it because it was such a chaotic scene. I feel like as a kid the juxtaposition of all those different element. It's like every actor is on a completley different page. Toby starts elated, MJ starts composed but is about to break, and the waiter is just on the outside on a totally different planet as the other two. As a kid I found that scene hilarious but as an adult it certainly hits different. As you point out it's a great microcosm of the conflict of the whole movie.

Completely agree with you, Joel. My husband and I recently rewatched all 3 at home and were able to catch the first in theaters again. I loved the 3rd. Cinema Therapy did a great analysis of the characters that helped me appreciate it even more deeply. People DO succumb to their egos and behave badly like Peter did all the time, unfortunately, and it tells a very interesting story about navigating that type of thing within a relationship. Something that's made even harder because neither Peter nor MJ can really talk about it openly with anyone else, because they both need to protect Peter's identity. So the difficulty is made even harder because of that isolation.

The abandoned 4th movie sounded interesting. The main antagonist was gonna be the Vulture (which they ended up adapting for the first MCU Spider-man movie!) and I guess the premise was gonna be that Pete is maybe getting too old for this, since this decrepit bird man was able to kick his ass. Could see that plot maybe leading to a retirement of sorts. Silly trivia is that they also wanted Bruce Campbell to be revealed to be Mysterio (who ended up in the second MCU Spider-man movie! It's like they were following a roadmap lol) and thus the implication would be his cameos in the earlier movies were all the same guy, vaguely antagonizing his enemy but never making enough of an impression on him to be recognized each time he appeared.

I'm usually on the outskirts of this sort of discourse, but you do still hear it. This being trash and that being a masterpiece. These sort of ideas really propagate on their own terms way more often than on the merit of what they talk about. Quickly thrown hyperbole opinions are completely disingenuous but not really in a bad way it's just part of small talk. But they are strong in tone and conviction so they resonate a lot further than real opinions which are often less striking and/or much more wordy. Like how many people REALLY think all that bad of spiderman 3? I couldn't tell you, but I tend to believe there's not that much negative passion to go around and most people would probably find it pretty okay at least, especially if they enjoyed the first two.

I totally agree with your sentiments on the movie and I really, unironically like SM3. That said, I would encourage you to rewatch Spider-Man 2 with the concepts of *class* and *community* in mind. I think Spider-Man 2 does such a great job of capturing Peter's struggles as a working-class hero, someone who's beset at all sides by desperately trying (and failing) to hold down a job, to hold down his studies, to hold down his relationship, to pay *rent*, and also to live up to his responsibilities as a hero. The scene that always tore me apart is when he comes home from a rough work day, walks into his dingy apartment, immediately faces hassle for rent, slumps down on his bed with an air of defeat, and just...switches on the police scanner. Like, in face of it all, he still has to somehow find it in himself to keep going. And with all of that said, the sense of *community* is one of most important aspects of being the working class "friendly neighbourhood" superhero. The idea that, in spite of everything else, the city of new york is presented to him (and us) as a character in itself--one which would stand in the way of a powerful villain to protect him, one which would catch him when he falls, one which would protect his identity. I think there's a line in the first movie when they're pelting The Green Goblin with trash--"you mess with one of us, you mess with all of us". There's a true sense of community strength in New York's working class as they appear in those films. That's what Spider-Man 1&2 mean to me, at least. I really love those films, 2 in particular.

Yes!!!! The third movie has always had my favorite theme of the whole trilogy. Responsibility, Sacrifice, and then Forgiveness. These movies made such an impression on me in my formative years and I can’t comprehend not loving them as a collection. Also, it has to be said that the flaws Spider-Man 3 does have are due in large part to the heavy studio interference from Sony.

This movie is phenomenal. If you think of the symbiote as a drug addiction, and how it can absolutely take someone over and make them something they’re not, it makes total sense. I love this movie.

It’s so crazy that you released this literally right as I was sitting down to watch this movie! I was super excited to watch this video after seeing the movie and seeing all your thoughts on it! I have so much to say about this movie and no one to talk about this to so sorry if this comment is just a big nonsensical rant I always thought this movie was flawed but I also always kind of respected it, but something about this viewing really made me appreciate just how great this film actually is! I think it builds on the first two in such a brilliant way. The first movie was about Peter becoming a hero, it was all about “with great power comes great responsibility” and the second film challenged that thesis by asking what would happen if literally everything was going wrong in your life. What if this responsibility was such a sacrifice that it literally bordered on being self destructive, is it still worth it then? What’s the line between selflessness and self harm? Ultimately, it’s a movie about coming to terms with sacrifice. “Sometimes, doing what’s right means giving up the thing you want most, even your dreams.” I could talk about that all day but the important thing is the way this sets up the third. Spider-Man 3 takes the great power thesis and instead of saying “what if this was more difficult than you thought” it says “what if this was actually way too easy?” Everything is going wrong for Peter in Spider-Man 2, to an almost comical degree, and the opposite is true in Spider-Man 3. Everything is going so right for him, but it turns out that that’s actually an even bigger challenge because the harm from that is invisible and insidious I think Spider-Man 3 is a movie about ego. It’s about how our perceptions of ourselves and our delusions of grandeur transform us into monsters. When Harry loses his memory, literally loses all sense of his own perception of self and ego, we see his burdens become almost weightless. He literally says something like “funny how forgetting yourself can make you so happy” at the festival scene. It’s no accident that right as Harry forgets about his vendetta against Spider-Man, the man he believes killed his father, Peter behind his own vendetta against Flint Marko, the man he believes killed his father (figure). I think there’s symmetry here in the way these characters feel the need to indulge their pride. They need to hate this person who took something dear from them. They need to get revenge, they thrive off the hate. But this makes both of them into bitter, monstrous people. I actually watched the movie this my mom today and during the omelette scene she turned to me and was like “Harry is so nice to her and so handsome and so great, why does she even want to be with Peter?” And it’s right then that Harry gets his memory back and he literally breaks into her house and threatens her as the New Goblin and my mom was like “oh yeah, I forgot he’s insane.” All the most villainous turns in this movie happen during moments when our characters’ prides are being hurt the most. There’s a clear escalation where the more Peter’s ego gets hurt, the more he indulges his ego and adopts the black suit persona. He gets the black suit for the first time when he finds out Marko is alive, which is “coincidentally” the same night MJ gets mad at him at the restaurant and ruins his proposal. He chooses to wear the black suit again when he hunts down Marko to kill him. He fully gives himself in to the black suit when MJ breaks up with him. Each time we see Peter come back to his ego like a drug, and each time he does he finds a new way to hurt someone. Harry is similar. He gets his memory back when MJ rejects him. The feeling of humiliation, the ultimate bane of ego, is what reawakens the goblin persona inside of him. Funnily enough, the two characters who are exceptions to this trend are the two villains. Sandman’s intentions remain selfless throughout the whole story. Peter defeats him by committing the ultimate act of humility, sympathizing with your enemy, and forgiving them for their past transgressions against you. Eddie Brock is the opposite. Even before he gets the symbiote he’s already Venom. The movie doesn’t devote much time to his character because there’s nothing to explore. He’s a shallow, air headed douche bag. He doesn’t care about anything other than himself and his pride and his ego. He’s a habitual liar constantly boasting about things that aren’t true to make him look better. The first time we meet him, he tells captain Stacy that he works for the daily bugle and he’s dating the captain’s daughter, two things that turn out to be lies. He technically works for the bugle but JJJ doesn’t even know him yet, and he’s literally not dating Gwen. They had coffee one time. He photoshops his big prize winning photo, he puts Peter down and tries to steal his job for no reason, he’s an asshole to everyone around him, he’s actually trash (like Peter says lol). Peter warns him that the symbiote destroys the real you, but this isn’t a problem for Eddie because there is no real him. He’s just what’s on the outside. He dies mindlessly perusing this self destructive life style. He would rather explode alongside the symbiote than live without that power. Peter beats him by literally letting him destroy himself. And this happens at the same time Harry sacrifices himself as well, but Harry does sacrificing himself for something he loves, achieving true ego death, Brock sacrifices himself on the altar of ego. It’s such a complicated but wonderfully complex film. Like I can’t even fully express all the ideas here, and I’m missing out on so much of the movie like the entire MJ plot line. I think people dislike this movie because it is the most challenging. It’s actually more character driven than action oriented. Sam Raimi’s dry sense of humour is at its most intense in this movie too, and the pacing feels very mundane compared to the emotional rollercoaster that is Spider-Man 2. But it’s still a great film, and a fantastic cap to the trilogy.

You beautifully put to words what I found so compelling about Spider-Man 3's ending and what made me accept its divergence from how the two film's endings. And yet, each ending is bittersweet at the core, preserving that tonal essence. You're awesome.

The hill that I will begrudgingly die on is that the first movie(that I liked the most as a kid) has enough pacing problems that I think it's easily the worst of the Raimi trilogy. I was asking myself that same "when does it get bad" question the whole time I was re-visiting the third movie too. I think the scene between Harry and MJ in the kitchen would've done wonders in the first movie to suggest that Harry and MJ might actually be a couple.

The expression of emotion is absolutely fantastic and what made me fall in love with Tom Holland's Spider-Man in homecoming. Sam Raimi famously did not want Venom in this movie but Sony forced him to put him in the movie because he was such a popular character so I firmly believe the scene where Peter dances around town was a direct middle finger to Sony by Sam Raimi for making him shove Venom in the movie 🤣

When I was in high school, i really started getting into movies. I have always been critical, and most of my moviegoing was hateing things i viewed as mistakes. Over the years, the grind of life pulled away at my time as it does for a lot of people, and movies ended up on the chopping block. I started watching you for your humor, but have really come to love your filmmaking. Hearing your opposition towards the "industry" and your positive passion for the expression in filmmaking has rekindled a joy in me. For that reason, i want to thank you, and i eagerly look forward to your future films.

Thank you so much for making this video, Joel. I've been waiting for YEARS to see somebody share my opinion on this. Every time somebody I respect makes a video about Spider-Man 3 I click with hope, but I'm always disappointed when even the more positive takes say something like "sure, 'Emo Spider-Man' is terrible, but there are some cool action scenes..." It's just like you said: "Emo Spider-Man" is a dork's idea of a cool person, i.e. exactly what Peter would turn into if he went bad. I think a lot of people wanted to see him turn into the Punisher or something, but that wouldn't make sense for the character. In general I think at that time a lot of comic book nerds were still in the mindset of wanting these movies to be darker and grittier (see Nolan's Batman films) because that supposedly makes them more "mature" and equates in their mind to taking the material seriously, which explains some of the backlash to Spider-Man 3. But it still baffles me when people treat the comedy scenes here as if the movie is being funny unintentionally when they also claim to appreciate Sam Raimi's other stuff, like Army of Darkness, which has the same over-the-top, self-aware goofiness to it.

Amazing timing! Myself and my partner had the very good fortune to be able to see Spiderman 3 on film just this Monday at the gorgeous and historic Redford Theater here in Detroit, and the audience was STOKED. There was the expected laughter at the meme moments, but there was also laughter at all the great laugh moments intended by the film - and cheering at the heroic moments, gasps at the shocks... The movie was WORKING. How bad can a movie be which consistently holds the audience in the palm of its hand? Plus it's an absolute TEARJERKER. I have always loved this movie and my opinion of it has only grown over the years, I'm delighted you enjoyed it and I agree with so much of what you said here! Ps - my partner is going to die mad about the MC at the film showing, who went up during the intermission to shit talk the movie, dusting off his 20 year old wet takes, congratulating the audience on coming out to an "objectively bad movie" UM EXCUSE ME SIR???
