The fact that Mr. Llewelyn passed away in real life shortly after TWINE’s release makes this scene even more emotionally charged. Brilliant actor! His scenes as Q were always a joy to watch! The mutual affection between him and Bond was obvious.

Especially when he said he always tried to teach him two things: never let them see you bleed, and always have an escape plan. Loved that he always cared for Bond despite never really bringing his equipment back in pristine order. Rest in peace, Desmond.

When the vhs tape was released one of the bonus features on here was a tribute to Desmond

He signed off with a superb one liner which was quite ironic in itself. "Always have an escape plan" RIP Sir Desmond Llewellyn, you are greatly missed and remembered as Q, the man without whom Bond wouldn't last even 5 minutes.

There is a dark feeling when Q is making his escape plan. Desmond Llewellyn really had a magnificent and humorous creativity for the character.

This scene still gets me after all these years. There was a collective "awww" in the theatre as Q descended. A fitting way for him to sign off.

Sad But satisfying farewell to a legend

When Bond asks him "You're not retiring anytime soon, are you?" seems so sad and sombre. One of the only instances I think that Bond shows any kind of care for another person who isn't a love interest. And yes, even more emotional knowing that this was genuinely one of the last times audiences would see the original Q on film and in real life.

I’ve gotta say, Bond’s suit in this scene is FLAWLESS. The fit, the style, everything about it is on point.

007: You're not retiring anytime soon, are you? Q: Now pay attention 007, I've always tried to teach you 2 things. 1st, never let them see you bleed. 007: And the 2nd? Q: Always have an escape plan. Rest In Peace Desmond Llewelyn 1914 - 1999 😢😢😢

Bond (Brosnan) was genuinely saddened that Q was retiring. For all their verbal jousting, Q and Bond had a great friendship and affection for one another. This scene was in truth quite a poignant one, as it marked Desmond Llewellyn's final appearance as the curmudgeonly genius Q. Nobody did it better. Considering that Llewellyn died shortly aftet the film's release, I can't help but wonder if somehow he knew he would be leaving us. RIP Desmond Llewellyn, the one and only Col. Boothroyd, aka the Armourer, aka Q.

Brosnan could make seemingly unimportant lines feel warm and significant. the inflection he gives to "...are you?" with that look on his face, you really feel he genuinely cares for Q. And Q snapping at R "This is 007!", is probably the most reverential he's outwardly ever been toward Bond. This iteration of that relationship is probably the most affectionate of the franchise

@@eva44940 Not warm?! The entire fucking reason Q arrives is to help 007 and Bond keeps trying to send him home FOR PROTECTION because he doesn’t want to put his friend in danger. It is literally the closest we’ve ever seen the two characters and Bond literally puts his hand on Q’s shoulder at one point and tells him he’s grateful for all the help but that he’d also never forgive himself if something happened to him.

Smooth, suave, sophisticated and witty. Bond was almost those things too!

While I still think Desmond's finest hour was in License to Kill, I'm glad he got a proper send-off here. Although I REALLY wish John Cleese got to have a longer tenure as Q...

I agree, Cleese was way better (and much less annoying than Whishaw's version of Q), curiously Cleese's Q got a more prominent role in a video game of all things, Everything or Nothing for the PS2. But this short tenure situation would happen again with Cleese in the early Harry Potter films, when he played Nearly Headless Nick for only two films.

Only Desmond can call John Cleese "Young"

I like to think Bond visits Q for a cup of tea every so often now that he's retired.

This in a way was the perfect way to end Desmond’s time as Q, it wasn’t what they intended but in a way it’s the best send off they could’ve done

Out of all the things that Q (Desmond Llewelyn) gave Bond, all the years of gadgets - some useful, some not, all the camaraderie, the love/hate relationship, the innuendo, the queen and country mantra...the most serious piece of advice (which we, as an audience, were never privy to,) was "never let them see you bleed." That's a genius piece of writing, right there.

RIP Q: we will never forget you. How brilliant and affectionate he was.

By far Brosnan's best performance as Bond, looks much more comfortable in the role.

Love Bond and Q in this scene. They’re laughing together, and Q smiles when Bond says ‘If you’re Q, does that make him R?’ Not to mention how sad they both are when they’re saying goodbye. RIP Desmond Llewelyn, we love you!

With the passage of time, this film is becoming the best of the Borsnan era. Beautiful and moving final scene between Q and Bond (which is seen as the farewell of one actor to another)

Who woulda thought that'd the last time we'd Desmond Llewelyn? The banter between and Brosnan as Bond was stupendous!

One of my favourite ever scenes from a Bond film. I just wish the platform had ascended, rather than descended. Nitpicky, but it's just sad seeing Desmond descend into the basement, knowing it is his finale.

RIP Desmond...... As an old soul person myself for 1999, this gives me the chills including seeing the nostalgic BMW Z8 before switching the Aston Martin V12 Vanquish.

I loved Desmond Llewellyn as Q, he was the best in the role and had the longetivity, that being said I wish Mr. Llewellyn retired with Goldeneye and John Cleese played Q in all 4 of Brosnan's movies. Cleese really fit in with Brosnan's Bond (he wouldn't have worked with Craig's Bond or Dalton's Bond), and it's a shame he only got 2 movies.

I can assure you, he was older than 36 when he died…

We miss one of greatest scientist "Q" Branch always on our lifetime misfortunately last to combined with pierce Brosnan era.

Fun Fact - The actor who played Q - Desmond Llewelyn, actually died in a car accident after filming this scene. Making this his final ever appearance in the franchise.

That was very very sad moment. When Q left Bond forever who was with him since 1963. RIP

This was the first film I saw out of the entire franchise still my favorite

I live where the castle was filmed....it’s Eilean Donan and was also used in the Highlander movie. Anyway, back when it was filmed there was a pub in a village 7 miles from the castle in a village called Kyle of Lochalsh. The pub manager was an absolute spitting image of Pierce and I’m pretty sure he was used as a double during filming. I was 21 when this was filmed and I used to party....a lot, so my memory of that time is a wee bit muddled, but the bar was the Islander bar and it’s still in Kyle and the manager was called Paul Kieran....a really nice guy too.

The evolution of the characters was great. Desmond Llewelyn was the only Q, he was there in From Russia With Love, with the best Bond ever, Sean Connery, all the way to the second best in Pierce Brosnan. Over 40 years. And as Q got older, and the various Bonds all stayed (roughly) the same age, Q evolved from a co-worker, to a beloved and respected father figure. One we were ALL heartbroken to lose, because there won't be one like him, ever again.

True to his word Q did indeed have an escape plan. Gone but never forgotten Quartermaster
