Kronsteen. Played by Vladek Sheybal, a Polish actor who twice escaped from Nazi concentration camps and who later emigrated to England in 1959. His credits in Polish performances were enough for him to be cast in British TV and movie productions. Although a naturalised UK citizen, he remained fiercely proud of his Polish roots. On a personal note, he always played believable characters, with dimension. I never saw him play a bad role.

This is probably the coolest that SPECTRE has ever been to me, a brilliantly voiced and mysterious Blofeld, two charismatic and interesting lackeys, and none of the cartoonish trapping we'd get later (though I do enjoy that stuff.) It's kind of weird to have the villains outline their entire plan long before the hero will find it out, but it's pretty satisfying to see them do it, and emphasises how intelligent and calculating the organisation is.

This does a nice subtle job of selling Kronsteen's brilliance. He's summoned back to HQ during the middle of a chess championship, so he wraps it up by WINNING the game (while the scene leads you to believe he's deliberately losing to get the game over with)

I really love this scene in the books too, because it shows Kronsteen's thoughts behind his "Wizard of Ice" persona. After receiving the secret orders, he decides to finish the game first. He is terrified of potential punishment for disobedience, yet can't bring himself to abandon the championship due to his pride. A subtle detail that makes a minor antagonist much more human in the reader's eyes.

The shot where Klebb moves to and from the aquarium at 2:35 and 3:17 respectively was originally shot as one, with her standing up from the aquarium and moving over to Blofeld's desk with a slight camera pan. They later found they also wanted to show her moving towards the aquarium in the beginning, so they took that entire shot, split it into two, and played the part where she stood up in reverse to make it seem like she's kneeling down to the aquarium. You can see that the middle part, where she still faces the aquarium during the camera pan while moving from / to the desk plays at both time stamps.

A subtle detail that makes a minor antagonist much more human in the reader's eyes.

Having the right voice in a role can't be understated. So Eric Pohlmann must be acknowledged for his performance. It sets the mood most convincingly. Much like that of Paul Frees who was the voice of the Rings in "The Time Machine."
This movie had every detail worked out so expertly. Epic movie
Such authenticity in the filming. In Some of the wider shots on the ship, you can feel the camera rocking slightly side to side to imitate the ship rocking on the water.
Having seen the documentary on the film, it's amazing to see how well director Terence Young and editor Peter Hunt constructed the scene. In its original form, it would have been a disaster. And yet, they made it work. Solid acting by Lotte Lenya, who was used as the bridge point for those establishing shots, makes it work.

That Persian cat was quite cute. Meow!
Do you have any outtakes in the vault you could publish?
'And our plan would not have failed until that goof ball from Mi6 showed up! 🍷Just look at his face, my word it's writtern all over isn't it?' - A SPECTER memoir by the late Kronsteen.
The cat is gorgeous 😻
Pedro Armendariz was regarded as the “Clark Gable of Mexico”.
Peter Madden (Kronsteen's opponent) played Inspector Lestrade in the 1965 SHERLOCK HOLMES series with Douglas Wilmer.
Vladek Sheybal always played sinister foreign types. He was a regular on British TV for years. Nearly always played the bad guy.

Just as Marne Maitland ALWAYS played the Indian / Middle Eastern guy whom you could never quite trust ??
Great movie
So when they were filming From Russia with Love and Thunderball, had they always intended to reveal Blofeld's face later in the series? If so, was Anthony Dawson originally gonna continue as Blofeld (with Eric Pohlmann as the voice) despite having already portrayed Professor Dent in Dr. No? Or was Blofeld always gonna be recast to another actor for the reveal in You Only Live Twice?
Kronsteen's plan cannot fail! this must be the end for Bond

instead, Kronsteen got Das Boot.
the voice is so good 🙀
So, we’re just gonna overlook the fact that he left all those people hangin’ who tried to shake his hand??? 😂😂😂. The best 007 movie to this day IMO!!
"and there will be no failure." He doesn't know he's in a James Bond movie.
4:51 I love that Kronsteen almost put the pen in his mouth, since he's probably accustomed to always having a cigar(ette) to chew on in intellectual encounters like the chess game immediately beforehand.
I watched the Japanese dub on blu ray and Kronsteen's Japanese dubber, Aruno Tahara, is also Risho in YuYu Hakusho. Grant's Japanese voice, Jin Yamanoi, is also Rolento in Street Fighter Alpha 2. Somebody's gotta do a Japanese dub James Bond compilation and throw in other roles the Japanese dubbers also did.
Did ALL men during this time wear signet rings?
So that’s who Mindy Sterling’s German character from the Austin Powers Trilogy was a parody of! And when I heard them refer to other members of SPECTRE as Number 1 and Number 5 I instantly thought of Number 2 from the Austin Powers Trilogy.
