The World According to Neoliberalism (Part 2) Higher Education

Ойын-сауық

A video essay on Neoliberalism in higher education. The political philosophy, established by Frederick von Hayek, Milton Friedman and the Mont Pelerin Society, was put into practice by Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan's respective governments, before spreading to the university sector in the 1990s and 2000s.
The philosophy was initially established at a Swiss Spa, under the guise of the Mont Pelerin Society (MPS). The founders of the society were concerned with the decline of individual freedoms, free speech and freedom of thought, and the rise of state power.
In this essay I breakdown the world according to neoliberal thinkers, to show their essential market-based philosophy. In Part 2, I look at the way neoliberalism has impacted higher education, turning some universities into for-profit institutions, and therefore changing the priorities of both professors and students. I answer: "What is neoliberalism?" and "What is the effect of neoliberalism on universities?"
This video was sponsored by the Cambridge Centre for International Research (CCIR). CCIR aims to make academic knowledge more accessible to the general public. This year, I am serving as a CCIR Fellow, to undertake unique public knowledge projects, in the form of three video essays on the topic of neoliberalism. Choice. Free market. Strange that more blue collars are needed in todays market. Parents and students bought into education as a tool to succeed. It does not work for many. Lesson learned.

I hope I haven't internalised neo liberal values as a product of primary high school and tertiary primary education.
