The Woodstock 99 Disaster: Drunkards, Durst, and Destruction

Ойын-сауық

Woodstock 99 was a billed as 3 more days of peace and music, but ended with riots, destruction and death for a myriad of reasons. The whole event was filled with ridiculous performances and absurd antics, making for an interesting event worth looking back at to learn from and laugh at.

Man Woodstock 99 could've ended so differently had the organisers actually gave a shit about the concert goers. Spending the money on providing better toilets, providing real security and not extorting those in attendance charging them ridiculous fees for basic essentials like water and food. No wonder there was so much angst and violence, it absolutely falls on the organisers. Saying all that, I would've loved to have been in attendance just to witness it for real. Yeah - conditions were not optimal by any means - neither were the conditions with the first Woodstock... As a Gen X'r myself - I am mortified at the rage-filled temper tantrums these people were throwing, destroying property and each other while burning whatever shit they could down. Granted, people were dying, girls were getting gang raped, the heat made things uncomfortable and all of that was on top of being FORCED into grueling pangs of hanger. But taking responsibility or even a modicum of personal accountability for the recklessly stupid decisions that we were making - is definitely everyone else's fault. Say what you will about millennials and the up and coming gen z'rs - but this shit show was on us - and it's embarrassing AF. I thought we were better than this.

I tried to go to the 1994 Woodstock! Total misery. After a couple of songs by Joe Cocker I packed my bags and left. I was relatively young at the time 34! I knew things were about to get really bad when an old hippie with a beer in his hands thought he’d entertain the youngsters in my area with “I was at the ‘69 show it was great” the kids asked him hey where did you use the bathroom there doesn’t seem to be any around. It was true and if you left your spot you lost it immediately. The hippie replied oh we just went wherever we was standing at. I looked at my bag with cameras and nice clothes and decided to hop in my car and drive home to Maryland. Best decision I ever made. About 45 minutes down the NY turnpike it started to pour rain. I realized then I made the absolute best decision of my life. Hey I caught the Stones the night before so I knew better and raised the white flag. It also was a disaster! If you want quality music and a good time go to the New Orleans Jazz Festival. Best time I ever had!

8:17 Woodstock 1994's Saturday closers for the North Stage were: Nine Inch Nails, Metallica, and Aerosmith. Doesn't get talked about much does it? Quite a heavy trio of bands, and yet it went on without much fanfare. Blaming the music doesn't hold much water for as to why the chaos occurred in '99. The heat, the venue choice, the price gouging, and security lapses etc are more to blame for the riots and destruction at Woodstock 1999

There was a lot of drug over doses, people got hurt , and at one point it was kind of unsafe to play because there had been lots of rain and the sound stage was electric and there were issues with that. My dad said the grateful dead hated being there and played their worst set ever. It wasn't necessarily as great as people say it was. It was just luck that nothing too serious happened. Although when the festival was over there was a huge clean up and the place was trashed. My dad said it was cool but like not as great as they made it out to be.

Funny to blame the artists. LB, RHCP, Rage and Matalica have played tens of thousands of shows before and after Woodstock 99. While yes, people commonly sustain injuries in any pit, I was accidentally punched in the face at a Springsteen concert for heaven sakes, these bands haven't had riots at their previous or subsequent concerts. If LB made teens riot, it would stand to reason that all of their concerts would have been riots. On the other hand, Mike Lang totally blew Woodstock 69 and 99. If you provided the same lack of security, trash cans, bathrooms, lack of water, a riot would have broken out if the festival acts were Debbie Boon, the Eagles and Air Supply.

Wrong, Vincent. Instead of just watching sensationalized Netflix documentaries that portray a skewed angle of the festival try watching the actual musical performances. This festival produced some of the most iconic rock performances of all time. Personally I had maybe the greatest weekend of my life. Despite what you have been led to believe, people really came together and looked out for each other. Yes, fires were lit and people acted poorly and none of that can be justified. But, I was there and I can tell you that it was so much fun!!!

@@davebarnes9626 I watched the documentary, I don't even remember Woodstock 99 but what I took away from it was it was TOTALLY the fault of hte organizers. It SHOULD have been called cesspool 99, and we know why that is-they cheaped out on crews. And the documentary clearly ended with ALL the people who had been interviewed saying it was the greatest thing that had happeened in their lives and they'd do it all again. So after the doc I came here for more of hte music acts, because its true, I wouldn't have guessed the Tragically Hip were there or tons of other acts. But it was ACTUAL footage, that looting did go on. However, having seen huge riots i lots of the US in the last few years certainly did make me and my wife notice that they were way overplaying just how bad this was. Yes, there was property damage, which I don't blame the kids for, they were treated horribly. Its like the 'new america' meant you should bend over for corporations and pay through the nose and take whatever they dish out. It was CLEARLY the organizers fault, thats was well established in the documentary. Anytime you are bathing in shitwater you aren't 'sensationalizing' how bad things are.

And remember, the majority of concert attendees were teenagers and kids in their early 20s. For a 20 year old working minimum wage ($5.15 an hour at the time), the ticket cost alone was a week’s income. Add to that, gas to get there, so another $20 bucks, then you’re told you can’t bring in food or water (another $20 in confiscated snacks) and have to buy their’s at an 800% markup (bottle of water cost about 50-75 cents at stores in 1999). So by Sunday, that 20 year old has spent $75 just for enough food and water to live on for 2 days, the campsite is flooding with sewage, the hundred degree heat is coming back, and the hangover is setting in. Multiply that, and you’ve got 200,000 people who are overheated, dehydrated, filthy, broke, and pissed off. You could have had Simon and Garfunkel on stage, it didn’t matter. The powder keg was going to blow.
