One of my favorite things about headlining sets at summer music festivals is the transition from day to night. And when bands such as The Wood Brothers know how to bring a dynamic performance to the time slot, it’s almost like seeing two different sets in one. As the sun goes down, the stage lights come up and the music gets a little grittier. And, in this case, Chris Wood swaps out the stand-up bass for his electric Hoffner.
When you’re as talented as Oliver Wood (guitar, lead vocals), Chris Wood (bass, harmonica, backing vocals), and Jano Rix (percussion, keys, backing vocals), you can shape the definition of Americana around whatever you choose. On this particular summer’s evening, the trio moved effortlessly from folk to blues to jazz to funk. The chemistry between all three could be heard in their spot-on vocal harmonies or simply in the introductions; “my little brother Chris,” “my big brother Oliver.” The unofficial fourth member of the band-the crowd-remained an active participant throughout the show as well. They were appreciative with cheers, quieter during the 1-mic moments, and rightfully rowdy at the appropriate times.
In all, the feel-good performance was everything expected. Oliver’s distinctive voice lent emotion to his original songs. Chris, who I have been a fan of since his days with Medeski, Martin & Wood, put on a bass player’s master class. And, Jano performed magic as he played drums and keys at the same time. About an hour in, we even got a guest sit-in from Billy Strings. All in all, this was a quality set by consummate professionals.

I was privileged to see Chris and Oliver at a delightful venue in Bearsville (next to Woodstock). Maybe a 100 or so in the crowd- one of their first shows as the Wood Bros. I’m sure all of us were fans of Chris and were largely presold on his older but mostly unknown brother - it had to be good, right? Oh baby! Sublime. He acknowledged that he was still getting comfortable with live performance and I assured him that as soon as he is doing 3 or 4 shows every week that not only does it get comfortable (or better) but one’s level of musicianship takes a QUANTUM hop to a higher level. (I had logged about a decade performing with a pretty successful Pink Floyd tribute so I ain’t just blowing smoke here 😎) Both Woods are wonderful, humble humans and I’m at a loss for words to describe my delight at how they have grown as artists. Holy Moley! Is all I’ve got!😂
