The Wonder Years - Pottery Will Get You Nowhere
Ойын-сауық
A wonderful scene from the Wonder Years episode that focuses on the mother character taking a community college pottery class... and the threat that poses to the family's stability.

Jack's generation were the guys who had to learn things were changing. The wife is free to sign up for pottery classes, go for a drink with her friends, have lunch out in the middle of the day. I love how he struggles as a guy with one foot in the 'old generation' to accept this when he clearly thinks her position is to breed and buy him Pepsi, in spite of how much he genuinely adores her.

Hmmm.... sounds alot like the bellyaching over the affirmative action taking place in entertainment today. Which is strange, because it seems like the common idea is that an all white cast is free of making political statements and that changing times shouldn't be reflected in our television, yet here it is.
If I had her as my wife, I wouldn't be grumpy like he often is. Best episode is the one where she goes out with Kevins friend Paul and we see how she sparkles from just a little attention, as opposed to being taken for granted all the time. Even grumpy seems to realize it at the end, while her beauty coming down the stairs with all that blond hair and black dress depicts the perfect woman.

Men at those times were thought to be jerks! This really reflects many things I saw growing up and I decided to marry someone that wouldn't be so ungrateful and would acknowledge women gifts. Best decision ever. Today I don't speak to my father and since then my life only improved.
I cry my eyes out at the end of this ep every time
For the people who keep asking why he didn’t say anything about the bowl. Basically the whole episode is about how the times are rapidly changing. Some adapt some react out of fear of that change it threatens the reality they grew comfort in. They’ve become accustomed to that reality. And if anything even a small change happens that person or people will react out of what this change will bring. You see it in a lot of shows based off this era the wife gets a job, out of the house hobby, goes back to school. the 60s/70s one of the biggest revolutionary moments in American history.

haven't seen the show in years, but there's an episode where Jack gets into a major argument with his wife, but he admits he's wrong and hugs her while she is washing the dishes. does anyone know this episode? IDK why, but it always resonated with me.

I know I remember seeing this particular episode on a re-run on Nick at Nite several years back. Never knew the name of the episode back then nor did I take the time to appreciate the show. But after watching more re-runs of it, it really grew on me and I managed to find the complete series.
One of those moments when Jack deserves a good punch in the face. The man's all right most of the time, but there are certainly times in the show that I hate his guts.

Exactly. And if you've watched the episode where we see,along with Kevin,firsthand a typical day at work for Jack,the episode "My Father's Office" and all the stress and BS he has to put up with all day every day,at least 5 days a week and probably at least 8 hours every day,up to and including an almost if not always daily blistering by your boss for everything that goes wrong whether it's really your fault or not,one can at least hope it would be understandable why he just wants to be left alone in his thoughts and to unwind.
Old man Arnold just gave up the chance for some hot late 60's housewife lovin'.

What, does she think there are going to be 200 people here smoking at the same time?
If I thought it was an ugly bowl I would have a hard time pretending to like it but I would try because I had a lovely wife who needs some encouragement right now. But not this guy.
Why did none of the adults smoke on the show when everyone smoked in this era?

I think she was hurt and devastated by the argument she had with Jack in an effort to get him to appreciate her and desperately wanted things to be better again. Then in the midst of the tense aftermath where nobody was talking, she became even more shattered and finally burning herself let it all out and she was like a helpless individual drowning in a flood of pain. Jack just as well couldn't stand to see her sad and in pain so he went in after her and held her tight.
I wonder, the Jack is a bit like Archie Bunker, but this isn't a sitcom. Without the laugh track, the things that happen aren't funny.
@JamesSmith-jq6om
Жыл бұрын
Jack and Archie Bunker are alot alike in that both are gruff and grumpy and disgruntled at the world around them and unhappy with the way their lives unexpectedly turned out but the contrasts between the two are while Archie is far from quiet and uncommunicative about his thoughts and opinions,Jack is practically silent and would probably be completely non-verbal if not for his little subtle one or two worded comments,like we hear in this clip,or if he didn't speak when asked any questions. Anybody ever notice that it's pretty much the only time Jack ever speaks to anyone is if he's asked a question and he half heartedly cares to answer or if he absolutely has to speak,or is it just me? But yeah Jack does share Archie's trait of being disillusioned and disheartened by their lives and being altogether angry at the world.

@JamesSmith-jq6om

@@MondoBeno no I haven't heard of it. I forgot to mention also that Jack,when he does get pushed to his limit and does blow up,like Archie Bunker he is loud and the things that fly out his mouth are unminced words and he can be quite intimidating. Of course he is verbal in the sense that he's well able to talk,that's obvious,but I guess a better way to put it is that he's very non-communicative. He just doesn't like to because I think in his mind he would much rather forget about his troubles altogether.
