I first read this book when I was twelve or thirteen, picking it up slightly ruined at a garage sale for a criminally low price. I remember it being the first truly "for adults" book that I read. I was shocked that the chuldrens and YA sections didn't have books like these, nitty-gritty and fine detailed, yet it kept me there procrastinating homework as I became more and more invested into the relations and mystery. Needless to say, it has a lot of special meaning to me, and I look forward to watching it. (please read before you watch)

For me it’s the opposite. I have never been happy with a film adaptation of a book I read first, especially if I really enjoy the book. But if I watch the film and like it and then read the book I am able to enjoy both.

AHEAD... * * * * * * * While I believe in miracles, almost exclusively in these cases of fasting adults and children it turns out they were slipping food and under strict observation died of starvation rather than overturn their beliefs and that of those around them. As a great many were children it is...terrible. Interesting to put such powerful forces as faith, family, duty, class (most were poor), gender, etc to the test in a film. ...But I'm pretty certain I don't want to watch it.

It’s kind of based off of a true event in victorian history! These girls were called the fasting girls. They presented themselves as miracles.

I would watch Florence Pugh read a recipe. That’s how compelling an actress she is.

Avoided this movie for months and finally clicked it today. Did not expect the effect it had on me. Cracked me open like an egg. Great film. Phenomenal soundtrack.

I saw this at London's BFI film fest and it was glorious. Florence Pugh is a powerhouse in this. Every moment was fraught with tension and the location shots were absolutely stunning.

Florence Pugh keeps giving us Oscar Worthy performances and Im here for it all!!!!

This is based on a novel by Emma Donoghue, with the same title. It looks to be a very close adaptation. The book was wonderful.

I read this book two or three years ago…maybe longer…and it was really intriguing and hard to put down. I had no idea it was being adapted into a movie! It looks great. Super atmospheric, just like the book, and Florence Pugh is an incredible actress. I’m also really intrigued by the snippets of the performance we get from the other young actress. I’m excited to watch!

Florence Pugh is an actress who is able to fill the screen merely by standing in front of a camera, totally occupying her character with only facial expression and body language. Pugh has emerged as perhps the best actress of her generation, mesmerising in anything in which she appears. In fact, I chose to watch this film (wrongly assuming that it wasn't my cup of tea) purely because Florence Pugh was in it. A 10 out of 10 performance in what for me is a 9 out of 10 film. An intelligent, insightful, thought provoking and compelling drama.

Just finished watching this movie and really enjoyed it. Florence's Performance was amazing as usual. The soundtrack was eerie yet not overbearing and it got me thinking about the history of Ireland during this time.

Can't believe they made a movie out of this book! I finished two weeks ago, and the trailer just shows up! I thought it had great potential as a movie, and I'm glad Florence Pugh is the lead, it's meant to be good

Simply an incredible film! Lighting , sound, sets, costume the whole works in this masterpiece! The story line was simply spell binding and took me there, at that time in that place!! A rare film for sure!!

@@Elwaves2925 in fact, Emma Donoghue, the writer of the book, mentioned (in a podcast I stumbled upon) that Florence Pugh herself proposed the idea to give her character, Lib Wright, a northern english accent, instead of a posh accent. Apparently, Pugh did her own research and told Donoghue and Lelio that majority of the nurses that worked with Nightingale back then are from the Northern part of the country. Hence, the accent will make it more realistic and essentially helped bringing the character to life.

Oh man I just watched it and I have to say, although the story is quite simple I was captivated until the end. The final scene had me sobbing. Plus, the soundtrack is incredible.

I love this movie and the way it is done. The light and colours bring a life paintings from 16th /17th century Flamands artists . Acting is first class. And the story ;how accurate and actual is today. When science meets religions,when entailment thinking must stragel with hypocrisy and believes,conspiracy theories...

This was filmed close to where I live, it's lovely seeing the cottage on the mountain next to the ruins of so many others.

Sometimes an actor comes along and makes you pay attention. You may/may not like the films Florence is in, but you have to admit she's always the most interesting person on screen.

it seems like if you want an oscar, first be white and then act in a victorian era type film that is boring and only appeals to a certain group....then you get your oscar....

This is Like watching a fine art gallery, each scene is a beautiful painting, the soft lights, the positions of the actors, colors, poses all are beautifully made..

Loved the book. Trailer looks promising. Florence is amazing as always ❤

She's so good at thrillers

Just watched this on Netflix for the first time and I am absolutely blown away. Not many movies have done that to me but after it finished, I just sat there like an idiot, smiling, shaking my head. The acting, the music, everything. Pugh was incredible, as well as Anna, Will and everyone else. The unsettling music and settings, that plot twist. Just gives me chills down spine. I’m shocked at how low this movie got. Wow. What a masterpiece.

I thought it was very good technically. It looked beautiful, the costumes & sets seemed authentic and immersive. Didn’t notice any bad acting performances, everyone carried their weight. Also thought this had one of the better scores of the year. It does drag a bit in the middle and it’s not always the most engaging movie but the ending makes up for it in my opinion.

Screenplay and acting are good. But this Film literally have such a bad story line. Really nothing is happening and what's happening is clear from the beginning. You're waiting all the time for something to happen - but nothing happens.

I picked up this book a few years ago randomly and I fell in love with it. The mystery, the questions, the doubt god I loved it all. Not many people I know, know of this book so I have had the oppertunity to rant about it. I am gonna watch this movie as soon as I can!

Love Florence Pugh. Can’t wait to see this!

Never say what something is going to be, just watch it, then say what it is. It's clowns like you, with your fawning hyperbole, that set things up to fail and create artificial hype.

Looks like a slow burner drama thriller that will leave a lot of thoughts and maybe questions. Great performers and such stunning visuals.

I LOVE this book and had no idea they were making it into a movie...I do wonder how they're going to stick to the dark themes of the book because they're pretty integral but very dark. I hope they don't tone it down but I'm super excited to see this.

Saw them filming this in the Dublin mountains last year while on a hike, the set looked amazing.

Anyone else feel like the book was so much better than the film? Doesn't mean the film was bad but the book was written so well, created such an atmosphere, more mystery and we hear more of Lib's inner thoughts like her scornful remarks about the irish and her curiosities. The film left a lot out, including the Irish accents and Wills ginger hair! That's not how I pictured him.
