the women of achill island

Фильм және анимация

On Achill Island, black faced sheep roam the seaside cliffs, foraging on seaweed and salt sprayed grass. The Calvey family (6 sisters, 2 brothers and the parents) tend to this wild flock, eventually selling this unique product as Achill Island Lamb. This short film tells the story of the women of the island and their long standing history of perseverance through history.

This video is a great example of how hardy Achill women are even the younger generation! We're a tough breed! Achill Abu

Thank you, Mr. Calvey. You remind me so much of the Calvey's of Cleveland.

A beautiful but raw place. I used to play as a goalkeeper, we often played away to Achill. On a windy day (which was every time we played there), I’d almost struggle to clear the penalty area with a goal kick.

It's written on their faces, ' we are dauntless, formidable, invincible.' When the rest of the country has become soft and careless, these like Spartan will remain standing. May God protect them and love them.

True enough, but the women of Achill are a rare and wonderful breed. I was raised by a family of Achill women. Don't cross them!

Lovely. people and place. Those hills look very bare however. How about a rewilding and reforestation project?

Good job, it's nice to see Island people do well. I wasn't sure if Achill was Irish speaking or not?

They speak both languages. It's still a Gaeltacht area. If you want to feel nature, you will feel it there. The strong wind, maybe the rain on your skin, the power of the sea waves, the sounds they all make, the colours of the land, the cliffs, hills, lakes, rocks, animals and friendly people.

It’s what’s known as a breac-Gaeltacht, partial. But most people are English speakers these days.
