I love that you bring up Maedhros' perspective in all of this too! How Celegorm & Curufin just assume he's going to welcome them and protect them, even though they've totally just undermined him in the long run. It's not easy being the big brother in that family...

The other thing about Orodreth's decision not to have Celegorm and Curufin killed is sheer pragmatism. It's impossible that this could happen and their brothers not find out about it. And then, for all that it might have been "right" to have them killed, it would have led to Nargothrond being attacked by the five remaining sons and their forces, and potentially the deaths of everyone in Nargothrond.

I totally agree. The damage would be dire to relations the all the Elven race not just the followers of The Sons Of Feanor and the Noldor and damage relations with Maedhros who is guarding the East lest even be an Elven civil war to which Morgoth would jump for joy and press a major victory from it. Orodreth is underrated as a leader. He is a far more just and clever reluctant ruler than we initially realise when you read into the story more and especially, as you say, his pragmatism, wisdom and compassion in sparing Celegorm and Curufin.

That canto from the Lay of Laethian hits even harder when you think back to RD’s first video in this series: Tolkien *was* Beren, just as Edith *was* Luthien. In a way, everything that Beren says/sings/feels about Luthien likely closely mirrored John’s feelings for Edith. On a completely different note, whatever happened to “David of Many Colors”? Was he just Rainbow Dave’s evil twin?

Beren and Luthien is almost too wonderful of a story. Just perfect beautiful people mixed with melancholy and the power of hope, love, friendship. Just as good to me as any of the Greek myths or what have you. Also there's an awesome giant badass talking hound that fights an evil angel in the form of a werewolf. Like dude, nice.

I will say that in the art depictions of the video I really preferred the Irish Wolfhound depiction of him more than the Dire Wolf one it feels more authentic and that’s probably what Tolkien envisioned. When he wrote of a giant hound. Awesome video as usual my good sir!

like how Tolkien shows the descent of Melchor to Morgoth through Celegorm and Curufin. Their paths Mirror Morgoths . Because pride and shame is what distorted Morgoth. He also turned on the woman he supposedly love among the gods and goddesses I believed he like the goddess of the stars

Celegorm and Curufin spoke ill of Finrod's decision to help Beren and they were absolutelly right. Finrod as a king had to be more responsible than to go into suicide mission because Beren had to impress Thingol with a Silmaril. When you think rationally, everything they said was correct and Finrod's premature death led to the fall of Nargothrond, because Orodreth was simply not suitable to be the king. If sons of Feanor, who are obliged by the Oath to look for Silmarils, tell you it's not the right moment to challenge Morgoth, then you should listen.

11:10 it should also be noted that elven realms do not seem to use the Death Penalty. The highest punishment possible in Doriath, for example, is exile: that’s the sentence passed on Túrin when he is believed to have committed *murder*. And what Celegorm and Curufin did wasn’t anywhere near that bad: they were not in any way responsible for Finrod’s death after all. The mission was suicide, and it would still have been suicide if the Fëanorians had been with him. Finrod goes on the mission precisely *because* it is a suicide mission. Finrod knows better than anyone how binding oaths are. So if he is swearing “aid in every need”, he’s definitely a bit done with life. 19:10 well *Beren* killing Curufin wouldn’t be kinslaying technically. They are not technically related yet after all.

I'm real confused about something and I'm hoping someone here can help. I went back and listened to this a few times but I feel like I still must be missing something… So these are the details I have gathered. Huan goes against Celegorm's plan and frees Luthien, then helps her save Beren, and in the process they free a bunch of prisoners. Huan then brings the prisoners from the island back with him, and the stories they tell when they arrive result in Celegorm and his brother getting in a lot of trouble and being banished, right? well... EVERYTHING we've learned about Celegorm up until this point says that he's a scummy, conniving, spiteful, opportunistic and overall terrible guy. He doesn't strike me as the type to be very forgiving at all. While you say "it might sound strange" for Huan to wanna go back to his master out of loyalty, what has me so puzzled is: After all the damage Huan's actions caused them, why the hell would someone like Celegorm take him back in the first place? Just feels very bizarre, but maybe I'm missing some details.

True! But Eonwë didn’t have to be sneaky in wresting a Silmaril from Morgoth’s crown. He had the host of the Valar with him to rip the roof off of Angband and Tulkas was there waiting with Angainor. Epic and awesome to be sure, but not the same feat as a mere mortal and an elf maiden using enchantment and stealth, together, alone in the very depths of hell.

I wonder why Celegorm and Curufin didn't head straight east along the andram, then head north through estolad, past Nan elmoth and up to Himring that way? They could have avoided the dangers of Thingol's marches and the Nan Dungortheb entirely. They wouldn't have run into Beren and Luthien, though, so maybe Tolkien wanted them to go straight north so they didn't fall so quickly out of the story and Beren could acquire Angrist, which he needed in order to cut the silmaril free.

@@tolkienuntangled Hi Rainbow Dave! Speaking of going through the Silmarillion chronologically: do you plan on covering Of Maeglin when you reach The Fall of Gondolin? You could do it as kind of a prologue before Tuor’s journeys. However, Maeglin is at the Nirnaeth and fights valiantly and scorns at Huor when they cover his rearguard along with Glorfindel and Ecthelion. Maybe you could mention Húrin and Huor in Gondolin as well as Maeglin as a prologue to Unnumbered Tears as another option. I think that might work better, as it will give more significance to their characters. Just food for thought. Great job on all the videos!

Tolkien had a story to create and if the two had gone off together and lived happily ever after there would not have been much of a story. Realistically going off together would have been the smart thing to do. So she would not have been a great elfin queen! They would have had peace. Luthien’s father was wrong to demand such a prize as a price for his daughter. It was only done to get rid of Beren. There was nothing honorable about it. As it turned out they did not really succeed in their plan so overall staying together in some other land would have been better and the poor puppy would not have had to die either. Sometimes I think that Tolkien went too far in creating sad circumstances in his stories….like how Aragon stubbornly decides to die and leave everyone before he ‘loses his wits’ (kind of prideful, which he had never been before) and Arwen, who has a son and daughters and most likely grandchildren, leaves them all to die alone in the forest of a broken heart. That was hard. I guess that is what writers do but to me it is not logical.

Could you explain what exactly Sauron's eye is? Is it a literal eyeball, is it metaphorical, or does he sometimes manifest himself as such for the purposes of searching for the One Ring?

  • @tolkienuntangled

    @tolkienuntangled

    2 жыл бұрын

It's not a flaming eye like in the movies. In the books, Sauron has a physical form that's described as having 'four fingers on his black hand', and an ever-searching eye. So I imagine the eye of Sauron is his literal eye. The only times we see it in the books are when Frodo looks into the mirror of Galadriel, and when he sits upon the seat of sight. So I think it's less that Sauron's eye is looking at him, and more that Frodo is looking at Sauron from afar, and the thing he focuses on is the the Dark Lord's eye.

Túrin Turambar is the best first age character that Tolkien ever wrote. He is the by far the most fleshed out. Morally complex, admirable, determined, ambiguous, tragic. Feanor and Thingol are also great characters as well as Finrod of course. Maedhros is as well. The only thing that separates Túrin from those other characters, is the amount of time and depth that we get to read about him. He’s probably not my favorite character, but is one of the greatest characters in Arda. Master of fate, by fate mastered. Brilliant

“Frodo had a Sam and Beren had a Lúthien.” Where’s the difference? I don’t see it. Seriously, people who ship Frodo and Sam are not making stuff up. We don’t ship it because “they’re cute” or they’re “so soft with each other.” We don’t ship it because “they’re close, so they must be gay.” We ship it because their direct parallels to Beren and Lúthien are absolutely undeniable. Whether Tolkien intended it or not, it’s still an objective fact that Frodo and Sam follow an almost identical path to that of another pair, who were lovers.
