Anjelica Huston had real presence and dominance as the Grand High Witch, she was tall, dressed mostly in all black, beautiful but had a wicked, cocky smirk to her and her stare was very intimidating and the big strong accent. She definitely looked like a real witch. She put the fear into 30 years plus years worth of kids amazing actress.

I have always loved this Film it is mostly filmed in one of my favourite places too go on Holiday Cornwall I enjoy seeing the beautiful scenery Im not sure whether Anne Hathaway grand high witch will be a match for angelica Houston grand high witch

I love this movie. My favorite childhood film. I love the GHW transformation scene in the ballroom especially❤️

this is one of my childhood school memories , saw this in primary school we used to have days where we would have games in or get to watch a movie. the teachers chose this for us lol love it. it still holds up well today love the makeup and practical effects. please please give this a 4k treatment it would be a day 1 buy.

I love Mai Zetterling as the grandmother. She was so strong and savvy.

I never noticed this but the Grand High Witch is an immortal being like The Beldam from Coraline or Pennywise from IT. The child she had locked in the painting at 2:14 is from a much older time period.

@@foxteen8721 But he didn't look old. I think the point of the scene is to show the Grand High Witch is so evil that she wouldn't wait till the boy gets old to die in the painting. Instead she killed the boy right away and finished the job of the witch that trapped him there in the first place.

you might be correct about the grand high witch being an immortal being, well, here's some evidence, first you were correct about the painting, it looks like its from a older time period, second, in the remake there's a line where the grand high witch said "pigtails pigtails, you wore pigtails, ohhh...many years ago in a shabby little town, shabby little town right here in Alabbama , you wore pigtails.... and you got away from me remember, but i got a ______ friend of yours , REMEMBE--- [ chicken noise]"[the reason why theres a blank there is because i dont know the word she said] this quickly reminds us the story of Alice Blue, where the grandma's friend Alice was turned into a chicken by the grand high witch, but the grand high witch looked young and desame , and the grandma was very young at that time, but, it might not be true, since the story of Ericka was replaced by the story of Alice, and it was not the grand high witch that made Ericka live in a painting, so thats all.

Yes it was revealed that Helga had a mild case of diabetes on Luke’s 9th birthday. That used to scare me too, that lead to my dizzy spell 11 years after 2003

You can't really tell from the shaky editing, but reading the script, the implication at 6:12 is that the Grand High Witch is using her magic to switch the Grandmother's tea and sandwiches to mess with her diabetes and make sure she stays asleep later on.

This movie scares the bejesus out of me Better though than the remake but I enjoyed the remake too.

the royal society for the prevention of cruelty to children. the witches was a true documentary based on nwo today.

They filmed 2 different ending 1: where Luke stays a mouse 2. Where Luke turns back into a boy Test audiences didn't like the mouse which is the originals ending from Roll Doll novel so they chose to turn Luck back. The new version has several changes including the setting America in the 1960 vs England, like the novel and original film, but keeps the book ending. I personally think the 1980 film is better, but that just my option. What do you think?

The Witches here look mostly ordinary and everyday, many even frumpy, with a few cute enough to date, which makes them scarier when you realise their true nature and makes sense they can lull kids to their doom so easily. In the remake they look so ridiculously high-maintenance they're already off-putting when you see them.

I can only say, new movie is more like a comedy movie with bad special effects. The old one was so scary that I still get goosebumps. Also miss Mr Bean as the manager in the old one. Anne was more like a female version of a joker I must say.
