If you haven’t already watched The Witcher, you’ll want to wait until you have to view this video since there will be spoilers regarding the plot and characters. If you’ve already seen it but find yourself confused about the Law of Surprise then you’re definitely in the right place. This concept was introduced in the fourth episode and it’s a bit difficult to understand if you’re not up to date on the lore involved in “Last Wish” and “Sword of Destiny.” But this interesting rule actually has its roots in Slavic folklore and explains how Geralt of Rivia came into possession of Princess Cirilla. Queen Calanthe learned the hard way that this fictional rule is a great way to ruin a party when a masked knight showed up to claim her daughter, Princess Pavetta. What did Duny’s relationship with the late King Roegner have to do with messing up his wife’s matchmaking plans? The Law of Surprise is an important plot device in this fictional universe that puts many major events into play.

I think you missed on key element which is why the law of surprise is upheld. In both the books and the show its indicated that in someone claims the law of surprise and it's not honored, ruin will come to you and your household. Sure enough, they try to keep the witcher from claiming Siri and their entire city is torched by nilfguard.

In the book, Geralt deliberately asks for Ciri. He knew the princes was pregnant before they knew. He explains this by stating that the world needs more Witcher but there are no apprentices anymore. He basically wanted an apprentice. Book version Witcher is more wise and experienced in this kind of matters. As if they nerfed Geralt for the series. He is more careless. I think this new Geralt is also cool.

So Geralt became a Witcher by law of surprise, and Ciri will as well. It's plainly stated in the short story, "A Question of Price". The stories are highly compressed in the tv show. All but one of the short stories in the first book are adapted to the show. But then half of the shows are made up origins of Yennefer and Ciri. Geralt is smarter in the books. The stories in the books are also more closely related to well known fairy tales.

Basically, there are three different timelines. Yennifer's is the furthest back, then Gerald and last Ciri. The moment the characters meet for the first time can be considered the moment those timelines get together and after that, they are in the same timeline. So the last moment when Ciri meets Gerald is the moment when all timelines become one. It can be a little confusing but after watching it the second time I noticed some hints about this and it became a lot clearer. (for example in the first episode the mage in Ciri's service says that in the past little girls were locked in towers and killed because people thought they were cursed. This points to Gerald's timeline that episode. When Gerald was tasked to kill one of these "cursed" girls)

Most likely old testament was the inspiration: Judges 11:29 Then the Spirit of the Lord came on Jephthah. And Jephthah made a vow to the Lord: “If you give the Ammonites into my hands, whatever comes out of the door of my house to meet me when I return in triumph from the Ammonites will be the Lord’s, and I will sacrifice it as a burnt offering. I'm obsessed with the show but I won't lie and act as if I wasn't confused through the stories role out it may go against the whole theme or flow of the show or maybe they jus wanted the shock factor, but I really felt like they should have started the series off with this rather then include it like 4 -5 EPs in where key characters are already dead in the present it kinda gave me whiplash until I was able to connect the 2 and even had me thinking that there was a random time skip that Ciri was pavetta or something lol. I'm going to trigger people with this comparison but the law of surprise reminds me a lot of twilights imprinting system, maybe just in a different context where as you don't know who you'll fall in love with, with imprinting you also become tied to that person, similar to what we've seen in the witcher where the law of surprise gives you owner ship of someone.

Kraszewskiego "Mistrz Twardowski" (1840) translation of the fragment: Satan save live of some nobleman and said: "I do not want to rob you very much, finally said Satan with a laugh, here you will give me what you will find at home, and why you do not know what you do not expect, what you do not count on; in this way you will not suffer any loss and you will reward me." Most likely old testament was the inspiration for the Law of Surprise. Judges 11:29 Then the Spirit of the Lord came on Jephthah. He crossed Gilead and Manasseh, passed through Mizpah of Gilead, and from there he advanced against the Ammonites. And Jephthah made a vow to the Lord: “If you give the Ammonites into my hands, whatever comes out of the door of my house to meet me when I return in triumph from the Ammonites will be the Lord’s, and I will sacrifice it as a burnt offering. FYI: his only child, a daughter came out of the door...

Im still a bit confused on everyone's reaction to Geralt claiming the law of surprise. Calanthe made it seem like he just doomed Cintra, and Moussack claimed the child will bring calamity to them all. Did they know Pavetta was pregnant, and if so how do they already know how powerful Ciri would become? Side note, why is she so powerful? Secondly, Pavetta vomits almost immediately after Geralt invokes the law of surprise. Is this simply to show she is pregnant, is it a side effect of causing a magic whirlwind for 5 minutes, or is there a direct correlation between her being ill and gerslt invoking the law? I think the show is great, but they tried tk stuff too much into the first season. As someone who has never played any of the games or read the books I am very confused and my family simply couldn't watch any longer because most of the dialogue has references to locations or characters that have no introduction or background so it just leaves you with more questions asked than answered. Cavill was a perfect casting choice.

Ya I am also a little lost on the Pavetta pregnancy thing. I think its technically Geralts? After he claimed the law of surprise she instantly became pregnant through magic and fate and all that? Unless Pavetta and the hedgehog dude were bangin before hand. Awesome show but your right, for people who have not read the books or played the games I could see it being super hard to follow.

Yeah the 3 different timeline really confuses me too as someone who neither read the books (yet) nor plays the game, but in the end it all starts to make sense… And as for Pavetta's vomitting, in this TV series I think it was made to show that she's currently pregnant… although I do suspect that they both did know each other prior to this betrothal ball, which is why she said that she loves Duny & goes all out to defend him… [BOOK SPOILER AHEAD] and this was confirmed in the books, which describes that they actually have been seeing each other for a year, & that the curse only affected Duny during the day until midnight, while from midnight until the dawn he looks normal… which explains her pregnancy at the time of her betrothal ball…
