    The worst part is, this proves the show failed to explain a lot of stuff. I've never seen this happen before. A show come out and, weeks after, the cast and crew need to explain this awful lot of things (I'm not talking just about these videos) because it was poorly explained (or not mentioned at all!) on the actual show. Pretty weird.

    Yes, and I hate to say it being a woman (who supports other women), but if you watch Netflix' making of series, it becomes VERY obvious who of the two (showrunner or Henry) is the culturally (and otherwise) ignorant one. Just watch him pronounce Sapkowskis name perfectly well, and she is just saying "Andrew" all the time.. it's revolting, ignorant, and frankly, hurtful. A true facepalm moment.

And whether you do or don’t choose to get involved, Geralt will always somehow be willing to rationalize your choice for him in the dialogue.

    In the real world it's not true, as meteoric iron contains so many impurities that it's a massive pain in the arse to deal with - you basically have to go full Japanese smithing with the amount of extra folding and working that you have to do to homogenise it. Even when you do, all you've made is a normal steel sword with some pretty patterns that will come out with etching, and if you don't fold, you end up with a broken sword because of the inconsistency of the material. On the other hand, it's properly iconic, and it's such a capital-R Romantic aesthetic. Plus, in fiction, it doesn't matter at all. If the author says it's stronger, then, in universe, it is.

  • @TAP7a

    @TAP7a

    3 жыл бұрын

    @DarkEternal6 exactly, all due to having crap material, which meteoric iron is. I only mention the Japanese because their steel was so awful for so long that folded steel has become a bit of a touchstone, I was hoping to loop it all together to emphasize just how "meh" meteoric swords would be IRL. Not to take anything away from the Norse or other historical bladesmiths, but the historical Japanese are more famous than them for it and there's a chance that it might help a reader draw the connection I was going for in a parallel to my comment

    @@TAP7a Love your post! A metallurgist would say that meteorite iron would not be superior to modern steel (such as Hitachi Blue or White) But in the author's universe? It's the Shizz with a capital SHI! And the literature is meant to cast our minds (as a modern reader) to the time when meteorite iron was the most expensive, most rare material to make weapons from. It was considered to come from the gods, and only the most wealthy could afford to commission the very best craftsmen to create them a signature weapon from it. Knowing what little I do about ancient meteorite weapons, I could completely buy into the author's take on their mystique.

But if it were up to me in terms of looks, and the show wasn't just a Hollywood-ised exercise in mediocrity, I'd prefer Anson Mount. If you haven't seen Anson Mount as Geralt yet, just type in Anson Mount Geralt on google pictures, there's a pic of him, a profile view more or less, with grey hair and a beard. If that doesn't look almost like Geralt, I don't know what does.

    @@iWillWakeYouUp well, casting is not just always about the looks. Henry has put a lot of work into this. He dehydrated himself to shape up his body for certain scenes, he changed his voice to portray Geralt's, he trained so much to copy Geralt's combat skillz, and not to mention that he's an OG fan of the Witcher so he's really giving the attention to nail the accuracy on the details. Wouldn't really call it "mediocre". His gorgeousness was just a bonus really.

    When Geralt talks to Iola in The Last Wish, he tells her that "as there are monsters which can be struck down only with a silver blade, so there are those for whom iron is lethal." A lot of people read this as "oh, so there are actual monsters who can/should be killed with iron swords!" I think that's an incorrect reading; what Geralt's implying is that there are humans who are no less monstrous than those with fangs, claws, and horrific forms. All his swords are for monsters, and considering how intensely Geralt is shown to feel remorse and regret, I think that's a justification he needs to constantly make in order to live with himself.

    This man’s presence, his aura, posture, his command over language... the ability to look like a well trained witcher capable of going multiple rounds with mythical monsters even when standing there as Henry and not as Geralt... its astounding. He was perfect for the role of Geralt, and he was perfect for the role of Superman... unfortunately for him one of those roles did not accompany a strong script, director, or support... and I’m not talking about the role of Geralt... It only goes to show how amazing this person’s skills are and how successful this show has been and will be with him as the lead with the fact that it was renewed for a second season even before the first one was released for viewing on netflix.
