Fun fact! They cut this from the light novel (don't know why it was in the WN) and therefore the anime as well. Subaru accidently catches a glimpse of one of her eyes. He then realizes that he instantly ate off his own entire arm and that he was wiping off the blood from his mouth. Minerva comes again to save him before he can eat more of himself and then he continues his convo with Daphne again. Her eyes make you feel infinite, endless hunger

SPOILER WARNING! Daphne can be seen using her Authority of Gluttony and making people feel extreme hunger by touching or looking at them. Just one eye was enough to force Subaru to experience it, causing him to eat his arm and try to lick his own blood while ignoring everything other than the thought of eating. Despite this, Echidna described Daphne's left eye as "nothing much", stating that she was a terror if she used her right eye or if she "ate" him.

That why I love the show and the novels for being scary without trying to be scary. It doesn't have to be edgy and dark by appearance and excessive gore and violence like berserk or goblin slayer to make us feel disturbed and chilling in it effects that make this more of a psychological horror story than a power fantasy.

It's actually a two-pronged approach to solving world hunger. Either people overcome those creatures and have plenty of food, or the creatures will destroy people in large numbers, making it so that there are fewer mouths to feed. It's a horrendous solution, but it's also one that would succeed no matter what.

This was one of my favorite scenes in the novel because it goes more in-depth into the mentality behind witches. In all of RE:Zero, Subaru tries to make reason of everything that happens but witches are simply beyond reason. Daphne’s concept of “Hunger” is different from a normal person or even an Archbishop’s perspective, and Subaru thought that there would be a logical reason behind Daphne’s creations but witches think beyond logic that normal people can understand. You can sympathize with their flawed worldview because that world applies to the witches alone, which makes them a fearsome but lonely existence. It was great writing from Natsuki Taipei, and I am so happy it got animated.

I mean Daphne's logic is pretty sound? She thinks these beasts can end hungry but thinks its selfish to do so without the food trying to fight back. It sounds messed up because humans think they are superior then others but her mindset is a very dog eat dog world. Eat or be eaten. Even subaru says that he understands the logic of her world view so idk why you are saying subaru cant see her logic.

And that is flawed. A lion doesn't need to fear a zebra as humans don't have to fear a rabbit. You may think what Daphne does is reasonable but it is not. We don't only think we are superior, humans ARE superior to every creature living in the world, hence why we control everything, no animal stands a chance. Our intelligence gave us the edge in everything. No sound human would value the life of a rabbit to that of a human. But since Daphne feels endless hunger, her reason is warped.

Consider Daphne's point about Subaru not being able to understand unless he has starved, only then can he understand the world that Daphne and the Bunnies live in. Now consider Daphne's quandary, she lived in a world where people were selfish with the concept of food and would do whatever it takes to ensure that only those deserving get to have it. When you are hungry everything is food and that supposed superiority and intelligence of humans goes away. We are nothing but animals when it comes down to survival of the fittest. In that respect she felt that the only fair exchange was to make a food source that would drive humans to the same desperation as the animals they hunted. Only then would they be equal and only then would the exchange be fair. And thus the food is valued. She is not ignoring the idea of man's superiority, she is merely pointing out that in a battle of survival the only thing that matters is the one with the bigger appetite. In the face of that ideal our intelligence means nothing.

She can't toggle off her power like the other Witches (except Satella), if she looks at or touches somebody that person feels such extreme hunger that they lose the ability to think and will eat their own body parts. She is locked up to keep absolute calamity from happening by accident. She isn't the most powerful Witch though, that is Sekhmet the Witch of Sloth (luckily she is too lazy to actually do much of anything with her power).

I'm impressed on how someone can be this cute and terrifying at the same time

Nonspoiler Trivia: Daphne talks with a _Yukkuri_ speech, meaning _slowly or at ease/chill_ . You can hear it when she extends certain words or names at the end of her sentences like "Subaruun~" or "Desu yo~. While the word is mostly associated with Touhou, talking like a _Yukkuri_ very much compliments Daphne's character. She is not outright lazy but unless it involves eating, she would much rather sit in place doing nothing than getting up and doing something then getting hungry.

Sure, here s your answer: (spoilers obv): Short answer:yeah she ll still reappear. Long and more spoilery answer: She ll reappear once or twice in this season. The tomb gets shut down by the end of the season but Dona and the rest of the witches manage to insert themselves into a body before that happens althought the rest of the cast doesnt know that, the most we ve gotten from them since is an extra chapter of them bantering while destroying some mabeasts. No idea when they ll make a return properly thought.

They never would have even found that whale if it wasn't for him. It was also lucky that Crusche was a human lie detector and Wilhelm had a vendetta against the whale.

Same, though moreso because it actually kind of unnerves me... Something about the way her coffin moves and sounds just... Eeeehhh, it really makes me worry for some reason.

She's the perfect balance of creepy and cute at the same time. The contrast between her cute voice and the creepy, erratic behavior of her coffin is really effective. It's makes her scary and menacing in a pretty subtle way.

Actually, Rabbits have been known to eat Carrion at the very least in desperate times (Including the bodies of other rabbits).

damn shes got a cool design and her thought process and motivations are very interesting I like how thoroughly they stick to the gluttony theme. I am definitely borrowing these ideas for dungeons and dragons.

I saw the thumbnail and thought “Hey, this girl is drawn cute. I like the art style.” Then I watched the clip and I felt scared for the dude with her creepy erratic movements and spider legs thinking she was gonna eat him at any moment like those evil bunnies did. 😨 She does have an interesting bad guy character design though.

The music in this scene is great accompaniment

If you really think about it, she does have a point. From a completely neutral point of view, it's selfish to wish for something to be created for us for the sole purpose of being killed, without having even the chance of defending itself. This makes me think that maybe the witches are not "evil" as we think they are, but that they're so neutral humans labeled them as witches cause they couldn't accept the clash between their ideals and our morals.

I would say something evil dosent have to be malicious just harmful to the person viewing them. in that sense the witches are definitely evil.

Out of the witches we've seen so far. Daphne I feel has the best design, with her little spider sarcophagus thing.

I wish they showed the scene where her eye peeps out and when Subaru sees it Subaru is literally so driven with hunger he starts eating his own hand, and the pain doesn’t even bother him. He’s just that hungry.

@@MABfan11 isn't the web novel kinda like, a rough draft of sorts though? I read from the LN (granted I'm not there yet in my re-read), and iirc the LN is the official story while the web novel is like, the original source but sometimes not Canon (as opposed to the LN, which is canon)

Ok she’s honestly my favorite of the witches mainly because she has the most unique design out of them all. I mean, look at her😂

Am I the only one that really wants to know about the Black Serpent, I’m someone that likes to have the whole world explored and I fell like Re:Zero has a LOT of world building that isn’t going to be explored, and I understand why, it’s Subaru’s story. But still, it’s such an amazing and well written world that makes me think of everything that hasn’t been explored yet. For LN readers, I’m going to start soon to read but can u tell me if the Black Serpent appears or is ever mentioned again in the series, until the point where it is now

If you want world building I suggest the rezero ex novels. They're prequels set before the start of the series. Volume 1 covers Crusch and Felix's past and shows what happened to the royal family. Volume 2 focuses on Wilhelm's youth and the demi-human civil war. Volume 3 again focuses on Wilhelm's youth and is more an anthology detailing his life. Volume 4 goes into Lugunica's shaky relationship with the neighbouring kingdom Volachia and the conflict between the two nations. Not to mention the amount of world building done in arcs 5, 6 and even 7 so far.

I get bedman vibes from this one.

Every anime that has the Nao (the VA for Daphne) I get flashbacks from Oregariu season 3 episode 4. I can’t escape this VA.

The fact that she was portrayed both drawed and in CGI and no one noticing or making comments about it tells me how good this scene was made. Look at 1:55 there's a reason why the transition was made for her to exit to one side and reapear to approach Subaru instead of just her getting closer.

I was hoping she'd use her authority of gluttony: starvation, to cause Subaru to eat his own hand.

thats kinda what happened in the light novel. she makes Subaru starve so much that he eats his own arm to survive just to make him understand the hunger that she feels

Subaru may not be Superman in power But boi he has the mentality of a god Like I would be in constant fear for anything weird or out of place after dying 100 times and even to a bunny , whale, etc Like legit look at the first 40 seconds of gluttony introduction Is really out of place and makes me feel like it would eat me

Honestly moving around in that coffin looks like fun.

Whats the soundtrack that plays during this scene? Quite creepy...

In the web novel Subaru saw her right eye and that caused him to eat his hand XD too bad they removed that

I mean, assuming it doesn't have some form of super-strength we aren't being told of, in a modern world we could isolate the Great Rabbit into an enclosed facility, and do what we do best: Inhumanely factory farm them for unlimited meat. I would like to poll you all, assuming it to be possible: People will be brutally eaten for thousands of years. But once a way is invented, there will be no more hunger until the end of civilization, or for as long as we have the great rabbit. Under these conditions, would you support gluttony creating the Great Rabbit? As for the white whale, no excuse imo.

Daphne is the kind person to see a just barely surviving human starving to death and says “I’ll give you food(pulls out a snake) there’s your food wait you think I was talking to you no I was talking to the snake.

I heard that voice Immediately knew it was Yui from my teen comedy Snafu

And well, I stopped eating.

i like how she didn't even bother to explain the reason the snake was made, it was just like.. "yeah.. its there"
