The wisdom of crowds | Karl Mattingly | TEDxBrighton

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Karl explains how the wisdom of crowds can be harnessed in powerful new ways.
Karl is the Founder of slowXchange a London based Internet platform that crowdsources forecasts on the financial performance, creditworthiness and management quality of the world’s top 2,000 listed companies. A CPA with an MBA [Deans List] from Columbia University, he is an inveterate optimist when it comes to the capacities of people and technology to solve today’s problems.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

There is a sci-fi book from at least a dozen years ago that I read, where this type of crowd sourced reporting and predictions in real time was a central narrative in the story.

Interesting, but what is missing is how these trust proxies tend to be infiltrated/taken over by manipulative interests. So what once was a reasonable trust proxy becomes a grift.

I disagree. In a crowd everyone abandons reason and do whatever the crowd is doing. If the crowd shouts the individual does it too, if the crowd demands something the individual does it too, if the crowd lynches someone the individual does it too, etc. Very few with independent thinking would go against what the crowd expects from you. Crowds are not wise.

You’re referring to the psychological concept of groupthink, which is absolutely real. However the content of this video is around the wisdom of crowds. The wisdom of crowds only applies under certain conditions, one of them being that each individual should make their decision/prediction independently, mitigating this effect which you mention

@patrickmauboussin Ha ha, but most people are quite unable to make an "independent decision". Social conditioning is too deep in 99% of people.
