We are close to a decade after The Wire concluded. All these situations and problems are still trying to be addressed in a proper way nationally while others have changed in a way the show predicted. It is a show that can be set anywhere in America. Any big city that is going through the day to day bumps and bruises as its own living thing. Much respect to one of the greatest shows ever made.

I used to do focus groups for tv shows as a fun way to make extra cash and it is the worst way to decide anything and does not work out the way one might expect for several reasons: 1. Most ppl aren't professional critics for a reason. A lot of times they themselves dont know what they like... and they damn sure dont know how to articulate what they like or dont like .. Even if they do know what they like. Actualy explaining it is a whole different thing. 2. there is peer pressure in the groups, so if others say something, i've noticed several times where ppl will change their mind or act like they liked something just to fit in with the rest of the group. When the leader of the focus group asks to raise your hand if you like this or didn't like this.. if a few ppl raise their hand, most everyone else will also then raise their hand also. 3. one or two ppl in the group will often have more of a "presence", they are just more charismatic or w/e you wanna call it..Maybe they just are more articulate or just were feeling confident that day.. i dont know what it is but there is always 1 or 2 ppl that everyone else almost always just agrees with w/e they say.

Every season was the best possible. 5th because of the depiction of journalism, that gives people what they wanna read, not what's really going on - and thats a huge problem in these days!

Not sure what you were watching, but towards the end of the season the project is praised both by the locals and the government health workers who see the opportunities. In my opinion what makes the 'point' of this season more obvious is that they name it after Amsterdam, wich despite its tolerance towards drugs is a paradise compared to most American cities.

@CanadianChronic2121 to me season 3 was the masterpiece where so many storylines and an entire arc ended with the barksdales gone for good, season 4 felt like they we're trying to build up the behind-the-scenes tension that had existed since season 1 and ended in the third season again, only it didn't play as well to me :-/

I read it as showing that the problems would be moved on elsewhere. I thought it nicely illustrated the catch 22 situation with both alternatives not being particularly palatable. Anyway, lets agree to differ, good art never has a single interpretation. Next time I watch it I'll think about your position, and next time you watch it think about mine. I didn't see "the wire" as 'Left' or 'Right', it was savage to both sides.

I have a bit of a personal disagreement with David Simon regarding the internet. On the one hand, I agree that the internet has undermined the traditional newspaper business model, which in turn has arguably weakened the press and certainly weakened investigative journalism since the average internet blogger doesn't have the job skills and/or resources to investigate stories to that extent.

To be fair I have, but they're not in English. These problems are not just a national issue. They are very much rooted in our political-economic system, culture and society. A lot of these issues exist in many parts of the world. It's sad that we ignore the political scientists, sociologists and medical professions. I felt the wire did well showing the real struggles, but it fails to link them to our capitalistic system.

There are some exceptions as some groups are run by rich, powerful black people such as Oprah Winfrey. However, as an Asian, I don't identify with anyone powerful in the media. I haven't stopped buying newspapers simply because I'd rather read tabloids as this video suggests.

When I see more Asian-Americans (men and women) reporters, CEOs, and upper management working at newspapers, I'll buy more newspapers. Until then, I'll get my news for free on the internet. That said, The Wire is the greatest T.V. show ever made. It, along with Lost, remain my two favorite shows of all time. I just had to air my personal beef with "the media."

@sibego88 Carcetti could have fulfilled his promises but in the end he was acting in self interest rather than in the interests of the community. If he wasn't soo concerned about getting out of Baltimore and into Annapolis he would've done what he said. Instead he just another typical politician that promises the world but delivers fuk all.

I didn't see it as bias, you are paranoid! I mean the area in which drugs were legal, Hamsterdam, was a hell-hole. It gave the choice of make life hell for some and separate them off for the good of the rest. Leaves it up to the watcher to make up their own mind. If anything I thought it came down against the legalisation of drugs.

Isnt it crazy that nobody here has used the word capitalism? This is the essential cause of all these problems theyre talking about, but hey they all need to be profitable I suppose. The notion that the media has a reaponsibility to tell people important news is laughable. Their goal, like any businesses under a capitalist system, is to make as much money as possible.
