The Wire at 20 Official Podcast | Episode 6 Remembering Michael Kenneth Williams | HBO

The Wire created one of the most complex characters in the history of television in Omar Little, played by the late Michael Kenneth Williams. Casting director Alexa Fogel recalls what made her consider Williams for the role, and Ed Burns remembers his initial doubts and how Williams extinguished them when the cameras rolled. Idris Elba, Andre Royo, JD Williams, Wendell Pierce, Hassan Johnson, Domenick Lombardozzi, Clarke Peters, Karen Thorson and Jermaine Crawford also join The Wire at 20 to talk about the special type of person Williams was, his exceptional talent, their friendships with him, and how his performance added new depth to discussions of masculinity. Rest in peace, Michael Kenneth Williams.

Agreed: The all-too-few dialogue scenes with Bunk and Omar are among the most memorable of this superb show.

Everybody started stealing that quote, so my favorite now is, "I don't know much about cards, but I'm think these four fives can beat a full house" as he busts into the underground card game featuring Marlo and brandishing two .45 caliber semi-automatic pistols.

Michael Kenneth Williams as Omar was quite simply one of the best characters in one of the best TV shows of all time. A three dimensional actor playing a character so different but so familiar in a very authentic portrayal of the mean streets of B-More early 2000's. Mike will be sadly missed. A true artist.

I've watched the wire in less than a month, just couldn't tear myself from the screen. omar is a really captivating character. his sensibility and vulnerability left some marks on me, "predatory motherf with a shotgun" , as bunk calls him, but with a code and big heart. legendary character brought to life by legendary actor

Favorite character in the series. Omar had a code and only targeted those in the game. And I got the shotgun you got the briefcase is an iconic line. Man is a legend and was in so many great shows not just the wire. Man will be missed, a great actor taken way too soon.

I got to interact with him briefly at Afropunk in 2016. After the P-Funk performance, everyone was leaving. We saw Jeffrey Wright leave, and then I think someone in the crowd said "there's Omar!" My homegirl ran up on him to try and get a pic (she shined the phone flashlight in his face, lol). He quipped and said, "I thought you were the police." Lol. I told my homegirl to just ask him for a picture instead of being such a fangirl. He graciously took the pic with her and I shook his hand and thanked him and that I admired his work. He gave that trademark smile and then left with his homie. I'll never forget it. Still doesn't feel real that he's not here. May he continue to rest in peace.

"For Mike's first scene, in that little room with the shotgun, he came up to me and said, 'Hey, how do you open this?' So I showed him, and thought, well, this character isn't going to last long... But, as soon as the camera was rolling you would have thought he was born with that gun in his hand."

I am enjoying this behind the scenes look at a series that I finally got around to watching and finishing just last week. It is my absolute favorite series, ever. I'm so glad they did a separate, standalone episode of the brilliance that is Michael K Williams. The scene with Omar and Bunk is a highlight of a top notch series!
