The Wire at 20 Official Podcast | Episode 3 with Wendell Pierce and Andre Royo | HBO
Casting director Alexa Fogel explains how tricky it was to cast one of The Wire’s lead characters, Jimmy McNulty. We hear from Dominic West, Wendell Pierce, and Andre Royo about scoring their roles and the unique prep work they did to ace their performances. Domenick Lombardozzi and Jim True-Frost weigh in on the precarious nature of the show, which often felt like it was on the verge of cancellation. Producers Karen Thorson and Nina Noble round out the episode with memories of executive producer Bob Colesberry, who passed away unexpectedly between seasons.

Rewatching The Wire for the 1000th time and I’m finishing up season 3. Watching the season finale after hearing this episode of the podcast and how they were “canceled” gives me a totally different perspective. It seems like the writers were giving us events that could send the show off for good. Stringer getting killed, Avon going back to jail and Marlo taking over, McNulty going back to the western district, Omar throwing his gun into the water, and so on. Everything seems so final if you’re watching it in real time and not knowing that there would be a season 4, just for everything to transition so smoothly into the next season. Greatest show ever.

That opening section on McNulty is amazing - between the struggle to cast him, his own reluctance to do the job, it's just weird with how synonymous he is with the show now compared to that! I wonder if that Wendell Pierce ride along stuff influenced the writing when Carchetti did his version in season 4? It was a very similar experience for that character. It may just be something that Simon and Burns had experienced, but it did feel really similar.
Can we ever can an interview with the HBO exec "Chris" that David Simon had to convince to get all 5 seasons of The Wire? It really is incredible that we got all 5 seasons...IMAGINE people if we got stuck with only 2 or 3 seasons.

Seems a theme of my favourite shows. I love Babylon 5 which was around about 5-10 years before the Wire and so many of those people have died. It's something like 60% of the people in the main credits have died IIRC

that was exactly how I experienced season 2, tbh... my first few rounds of all 5 felt like the 2nd one was just a few episodes I had to somehow tolerate, but when I found myself paying more attention to Frank's story & the other elements connecting his plotline to the rest of the series... it just really hit different. I didn't even realize how heartbreaking his death was too... LOL.., so yeah... season 2 is fantastic but it has been unfairly taken for granted ,by most fans imo 😔

It's hard to believe HBO was going to stop after Hamsterdam, when the best season had not been made yet. 😣😣😣

They were going to stop every season. I think the fans wrote HBO to bring The Wire back after Season 1. But they wrote every season as its own stand-alone volume, thinking it wouldn't be picked up again.

When I introduce my friends to this series, some of them are like "Oh this is a black series, with black drug dealers ecc." And I'm like, that's not the case, you get that second 'underappriciated' season and than you know, it is for everyone, now you can see a lot of black faces and know this is your story too. The second season killed the prejudice that's why I think it is very very important part of The Wire. It really made this show for everybody, it made it something different, better, universal.

So lemme get this straight, UP UNTIL season 5, you were totally on board with the show...and then after finishing season 5 you decide that the entire show was worthless? OR you were neutral or hating the show the entire time and season 5 only re-affirmed your judgment? So then did watching Godfather Part III ruin the trilogy for you? And if you are saying that The Wire was a colossal waste of time, then please educate us on what you think is a GOOD TV? Of course you are entitled to your own opinion, but your opinion is so childish in its over-reaction that it's the definition of "throwing the baby out with the bathwater."
