Insanely underrated band

And still a kind of underground treasure for the people who really want it. Greg is one of the greatest musicians of all time ever, in any genre
Just bought an old guitar amplifier today and the friend of the owner said ''nice shirt''. I was wearing a Wipers shirt. He had a studio that looked like Over The Edge could have been recorded there.

Greg's SG sounds so much more savage in the live version. Absolutely top band

What a songwriter. Hynotic as fuck, this record is unreal.
This band is as good as it gets!
Stunning performance by the most underrated band the US punk scene had, i have been researching Greg and the wipers for a while now and still can't find out what he is doing now. All i know is that he remastered the new Wipers Power in One LP how it should be on LP, nothing saddens Greg than transfering his genius unqiue recordings to digital. Greg kept it real he was the figure the outcasts of the Northwest looked up to, what a performer to.

I believe I read on his wiki that he's in Arizona now. I'm in Tacoma and it's raining five days a week in June so maybe that played into it. Think it said he's still producing music.
I consider the Wipers responsible for the entire Northwest music scene

Thank you King Buzzo and Nirvana for turning more people on to one of the most important bands that few people should know about. Once you hear them you either don't get it or you're a fan forever. There's a lot for you to discover with Greg and The Wipers. Enjoy it Kelley

@carrerlluna66 I first discovered them living in Boston around '84 (way pre-Nirvana) via college radio (WMBR, WZBC, WHRB).The song was "When It's Over" made an immediate impression and have been digging them ever since. Was lucky enough to have seen them live when they toured the East coast in '87 and '89. So yeah, Boston is one of the few non-PNW areas where they had (have?) a big following.
RIP Sam Henry!
Hell yeah. Greg Sage is a genius.
I remember those KGON 92 cent concerts at the Paramount. Rock on! :)
RIP PIG. Wipers still need a full doCumentary
In Kurt Cobain's journal entries, (page 217) he writes, "If there is a "Seattle sound" it came from Portland, Oregon in the early '80s by a three piece band named the Wipers.

A purist punk rock band with no compromise, interviews, videos, major deals. Would destroy there beautiful sound, Greg is a master of sound and vision through music. I cannot think of one single musician that has his talent. There music is outcast, which is full of soul.

The wipers are awesome I always relate them to the pixies. They have that surf punk rock and roll sound
Beautifuly captured. If only coulda witnessed it live
This Band/records had a huge impact on my life back in 83'. also I grew up in England, and I think they had a bigger following over there and Europe than US.
great band from the past saw them in the 90ties De Kreun small club in Belgium
I remember those 92 cent "Catch a Rising Star" concerts. Good times.
Amazing band.
this is amazing. miss this spirit in music
Thank you for the music
Incredible band. Greg Sage is my favorite musician. He speaks to me on so many different levels...
Portland you used to be so much cooler!!!
I love that I share the name of that name
13th Precinct was tiny. This would be like the Wipers playing in your house. So cool. Does anyone remember the graffiti scrawled in two-foot letters on the wall outside? Was it Oasted, toasted, roasted, wasted, basted and fried?
hell yeah!!!! Fred and Toody are soooo fucking cool.......dead moon and pierced arrows still fucking rock......the nicest couple in all rock and roll. I'm old, but i wish like hell i was old enough to have caught the wipers live.......
Was just about to cop some zzzz's when......HOLY SHIT IS THIS GREAT!!! One of the very best American bands (they never had a bad album--- all are first rate) live in 1983 at the height of their powers. Recorded at the time of their third album, the magnificent Over The Edge, This is a must see. The Wipers are an American treasure. Crank it as loud as you can, you won't be disappointed.
The Hendrix of punk. Listen to ‘Youth of America’.
Amazing band

This is The best shit ever. This is the American Joy Division. Can't believe I just discovered these nut jobs. Best band I have heard since I heard Ian and his gang in 1984. Pure Punk Rock Mainline.

We almost lived in a world where Greg Sage was in Nirvana, but he declined. What an amazing that would have been to see. He was such a better fit than Pat, and Pat was pretty good, but Greg was perfect for that band.

Fact of the day: Did you know that Greg wasn't a leftie, he was a righthanded player but he used to play left handed because of the different sound.

Ummagumarios Yeah ... At first I didn't believe it. But I think it's insane how talented he is/was. Did he take a normal guitar and play it upside down? Did he re-string his guitar E B G D A E (backwards) so that it'd be forwards upon his turning it upside down or did he play with the strings in the "wrong" order?
@Ummagumarios
9 жыл бұрын
Well his guitar is a right-handed one but he put the strings up-side down so he could play left handed. That means that the lower E string is still on top, but the guitar is flipped over. That fact probably is what makes him sound so unique :)

+Ummagumarios Do you happen to know why playing left handed gave him a differrnt sound?
@Ummagumarios
8 жыл бұрын
Well in the early 70's he was in a band and he was playing right handed. Then he just started playing left handed. it was difficult but he noticed that the sound was different. I think playing left handed made him play other things and sound different. Everything makes a guitar sound different. I don't know why...

I have an autographed Romeo 7” signed by Greg and the two Brads. Out of all my records, it’s my most cherished piece, and wouldn’t sell it for the world! I have only seen ONE other autographed Wipers piece by Greg. It was a youth of America LP on this bootleg yahoo store that’s long gone for almost 10 years now. I am VERY lucky. He was probably a guy who wasn’t into signing anything, ever!
I think Butthole Surfers lifted this guitar passage for their Goofys Concern song.
