The Windows of Heaven (1979 Revision)

Windows of Heaven was originally released in 1963; you can find that full version here: • Windows of Heaven (1963) .
In 1899 an aging President Lorenzo Snow is deeply troubled by the Church's crippling debt, left over from the anti-polygamy crusades of the 1880s. He feels prompted to travel to St. George, which is experiencing a tremendous drought, and while preaching in the Tabernacle there he receives a revelation to re-emphasize the law of tithing as the solution to the Church's financial troubles. Furthermore he promises rain in St. George if they will faithfully pay tithing. A reformation is begun throughout the settlements, and eventually St. George receives rain and the Church climbs out of debt.
Because of an excessive building program and other causes, in the late 1950s the Church was once again in a financial crisis. The Presiding Bishopric hence commissioned this film of the BYU Motion Picture Studio to help in a reformation similar to that in 1899; the brief was for a film on tithing, and Scott Whitaker struck upon this particular story.
Both the scope of production and publicity for the film were the greatest of any BYU film up to this point. The thirty minute commission grew into a fifty minute production--their longest yet--and hundreds of Church members were involved, including Harold B. Lee, who scouted for period locomotives. The members in St. George, including some who had been present in the actual meeting with President Snow, were particularly stalwart in creating this film, which they saw as their story. President David O. McKay, who had also known President Snow, was greatly moved, and after a St. George premiere it was distributed throughout the wards and missions and became BYU's most popular film; it effected a similar retrenchment in tithing, and the financial crisis was solved.
Scott Whitaker's script was apparently based primarily on the writings of Lorenzo Snow's son LeRoi. In his article, E. Jay Bell discusses several of the differences between the historical and the filmic events, foremost among them the fact that President Snow never mentioned anything about rainfall in connection with tithing.
Windows of Heaven was edited from fifty minutes to thirty-two in 1979 for its video release. This is the 1979 revised version; you can find the original version here: • Windows of Heaven (1963) .

Yes, but if I were the President of the church, I wouldn't like the Lord waiting until the last minute before he revealed something. Lorenzo Snow was my favorite president next to Wilford Woodruff. We owe a lot to President Woodruff regarding church history.

Then the Holy Ghost reminded me and I told him, "Our Church keeps really good records." "It's a dramatization of [ the event.] Another friend loved the "Dramatization." Whenever it rains around here, I text her, "It's Raining In St. George!" She always answers, " Yes, It's Raining In St. George!" She loves the truth!" In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen!

@@groverwashington1480 » Not so. A revelation was received making the priesthood accessible to men of all races. Before this, it had been a bone of contention in the church leadership. We don't know why it took so long, and that's on us as a church. Certainly there was overt racism in the early church, and some scholars thought we should just change the policy, as Joseph Smith ordained at least two black men. But some have theorized that the racist policy intentionally mirrored the racism in the United States so the church could grow throughout the South. That may make some angry, but as someone who grew up in the South, I saw how brutal racism was. You may think principle should win out over policy, but the Lord _never_ blocked the saving principles from Blacks, who were baptized by water and given the gift of the Holy Spirit. As long as we provided these saving ordinances, they were as able as anyone else to receive Eternal Life. Finally, the policy on priesthood came at exactly the right time. Segregation signs had come down, people were beginning to see Blacks as equals throughout the entire country, North and South, and President Kimball, the one who initially received the revelation for the Church, was its 12th president. And 12 is the priesthood number of scripture. There were 12 tribes of Israel, 12 oxen under the temple font, 12 apostles and so forth. Now President Kimball, as 12th president of the church, took the matter before the Lord, and whatever revelation came to him also came to the Quorum of the Twelve (number 12 again). President Benson, after the revelation, was elated, telling his family it was easily the greatest spiritual experience of his life. 🔹🌞🌙✨

Everyone, who professes to be a Christian, whether Latter-day Saint or other, & believes in the Bible, should be paying tithing for the Lord's work! "Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it." --- Malachi 3:8-10 Besides that, we are all beggars, for none of us would have anything at all if not for the blessings given us by God! A 10% Tithe returned back to Him is really not much when one considers all that He has given us & will continue to bless us with more!
