It's about time to get the windows and doors installed in the camphouse shed. There are a total of 9 windows, including 1 custom window that I make myself, and 2 doors in this design. All of the windows are single-pane utility windows since this shed wont' be insulated or climate controlled. There is a steel man-door and a 6'x7' steel roll up door as well.
Per usual, I've never done any of this before so buckle up for more learnings at my expense. One of the biggest learnings happened when I discovered I had framed my man-door entry too small...so I get to cut into my brand new walls and fix that - fun!
I also find out that installing a large metal roll up door alone is not only tricky, it's downright dangerous! I narrowly escape disaster standing that door up but I do get it into place.
With all of that complete this shed is getting closer and closer to being done. Winter is definitely coming and I need to hurry and finish!
Thanks for watching and following along. Be sure to drop a comment if you enjoyed it or if you'd like to scold me for doing something wrong. Both are welcome!

Travis, when my house was under construction 31 years ago, my wife and I were looking at the framed walls trying to figure out what was wrong with a dining room wall. We couldn't put a finger on it. It was missing a window. And they were professionals. From one Travis to another

About 5 months ago I finished building a 18x24 workshop with 24 ft trusses so that I could have a 6 ft overhang like you. I knew it would be challenging, but I learned a lot. Found out how much more I didn't know than I thought I didn't. Injured myself several times. Probably did many things wrong, but it passed inspection. Your assessment 'I'm an idiot!" was said many times. Very few times did I get done with something and feel really good about it. At least I now have a woodworking shop after almost 10 months of blood, sweat and tears and a lot more money than I thought I would ever spend.

High strength glass would be my choice for the custom window. Polycarbonate scratches very easily. Don’t use abrasive cleaners or “hot” solvents. Polycarbonate expands and contracts with heat. Mounting it tightly is risky. It could distort in the heat of summer. I’m liking your attitude about tackling a one man project, but it is risky so be careful and use safety equipment. Actually, you’ve completed the project so luck was on your side. I’m pretty irresponsible about safety myself, so I’m speaking theoretically only. :)

I just get ahead of myself and it’s easy to do. But with that being said your doing a great job, hell some of the licensed contractors I’ve seen can’t frame this good, keep up the good work man. A long time ago, an old (73) carpenter told his young helper, “It ain’t what you build that makes a carpenter… a monkey can follow instructions. What makes a carpenter is how you identify and correct (or cover) the mitsakes of the dummy that came before you.” This applies, often, for me… following my own work! ;)

I started flipping / renting houses years ago and taking on more than I should as we did renovations. If you do more this type work spend some time with an experienced framer and you will be amazed at how they do amazing work so quickly with nothing by a speed quare! Having been a builder for about half my 25 year working life I can honestly say that you have a pretty solid common sense approach to the build. If anything you are overdoing it and this shed will be severely storm proof, but I tend to do the same thing when it's my own stuff I am building! Keep up the good work! Also in terms of that dent in your door, you could probably build a form fitting jig for the outside and bang most of it out with a hammer and piece of wood from the inside.

Planning tip: windows are supposed to be sized for the Rough Opening (R.O.) they set in, and doors are sized by the door blank. So 3040 window RO is 3'-0" wide, 4'-0" while a 3068 door which is 3ft x 6-8 requires an opening that includes the door jamb kit that frames the door itself. Contractors I know sometimes add an inch each way on windows for 1/2" slop all around, and 2"each way for doors or a bit more in width if they don't know if customer wants a standard jamb door.

When you're hanging a window you can just throw a couple of roofing nails in the flange when you get it level. It's a little easier and faster than a screw.

Travis: I noticed that your "utility" windows don't protrude any from the face of the walls (unlike your custom one). That means that the typical metal "J" trim, assuming that's what you'll use, won't have anything to butt against. I've got this problem myself in the situation where I've bought a used window that's made for retrofit and doesn't extend out past the flange. One idea I had was to trim the window on the outside similar to how the casing would be done on the inside, to create a profile that the J trim can seat against.

Great build. Really impressed with your craftsmanship. Doing a project this size on your own is very commendable. I like the way you overcome any issues or mistakes you make it's all part of a process. Hats off to you. It's inspiring me to finish off my own self build. No where near as big but a challenge never the less. Thanks for the inspiration and good work again!
