In this tutorial we'll be going over how to use the Width Tool in Illustrator to create simple illustrations like logos and icons. In this example we'll be creating an abstract planet with orbiting rings around it.

    It's not possible with AD unfortunately. The workaround would be to create custom brushes.

    Sorry Nick, I have to disagree with you, even though I really appreciate your work and don't know half as much about vector design as you do. I just tried it, it is very easy to do in Affinity Designer. You start with a circle, no fill, just stroke obviously. Convert to curves, use the pressure adjustment to make the variable width planet stroke, duplicate to make the orbit. Expand appearance and then it's literally the same workflow with the Affinity shape builder tool as with the Illustrator shape builder.
