The Whole Thing Is An Illusion - Alan Watts On Letting Go

A profound lecture from Alan Watts on memories and the power of now. Original audio sourced from: Alan Watts - Eastern Wisdom - Religion of No Religion - Transcending Duality

“The power of memories and expectations is such that for most human beings the past and the future are not as real, but more real than the present. The present cannot be lived happily unless the past has been “cleared up”

Our hope with these videos is to push your thinking. As Alan Watts said “No one is more dangerously insane than one who is sane all the time: he is like a steel bridge without flexibility, and the order of his life is rigid and brittle.” - Alan Watts.

The past is a distorted memory, the future is a concept. This moment is all there is, ever has been, ever will be. I wear a watch, it broke years ago, but I still wear it because it reminds me that it is always now 🙏

That is easy to say, much more difficult to apply without any background knowledge and experience. I slightly disagree with his saying "don't hold to memory". You have to. Because... it is also how you grow. How you look back at old memories, somethimes with a slight nostalgia, sometimes with a deep anger, sometimes with love - and then something inside you is slowly changing too. You slowly grow internaly too at all those points, simply by going back to your older memories. At the end, sure - you may let it all go, at some point of your internal development, abd then you may concentrate on "now", the "present", living the moment so to speak. But at some point: DO hold on to memories, because it is part of a growing process too, and at some point you may discover that is is also a road that actually helps you to understand that it is all about living "now".

i remember after my daughter died, (when i was in process of getting a degree in digital media arts) i took my camera equipment to hawaii for an education break, and was sitting on this beach and saw this TRIPLE YES TRIPLE rainbow coming my way across the ocean, i felt i couldnt experience the beauty and joy of the moment just taking pictures, so i took 1 snapshot if this incoming rainbow phenomenon and laid my camera down on the sand, i stood up and walked towards the incoming rainbow and suddenly a tall blond man on my left and a tall blonde man on my right grasped my hands and lifted me up in the rainbow as it misted upon us all, right after that i quit my education real eyesing that i just wanted to experience life within the magical moments instead of trying to document the moments from outside of the actual moments experience, later as i looked at the images i had been taking, i saw my daughters face in the clouds of this magical rainbow, i proceeded to paint that image on a canvas knowing i got to EXPERIENCE the beauty of her essence within the moment itself, i will never forget that

I find that my home office is now filled with memories that provide me with pleasant echos from the past. My walls have my degrees, accomplishments, and artwork from my daughter from a time she cares about art. My corner tables have my chess set from afghanistan, concrete from the Berlin Wall, a small metal statue of the Empire State Building, a glass hologram from the mosque in Istanbul, my dad’s 45 years of work paper weight. My shelves have my Army medals, jade monkeys from my parents, a family lineage book, a silver dollar from 1885 that I bought with the last of my Army money from my second deployment to war. They’re just “stuff,” but when I’m bored or stressed I look over and realize… Life’s pretty cool.

Photography has been something that has brought me more into the present. Macro photography showed me a world that I didn't know about. You can suddenly zoom in to the eyes of insects, the fuzzy bodies of bees, the mouthparts of butterflies. Marvelous thing that you would never have any way of knowing about without the lens. But I used to dislike bugs. Now, I love being around (most of) them, because I met them with this tool of attachment. I can now enjoy nature more in every moment.

The Higher (Wealthy or so) don't need a Camera as they have lots of money to have their own Actions and Experiences. Just something I've noticed. Just wanted this entered as so for Future Reference(s).

Nothing wrong with taking a few photos. You are not missing out on anything. Great to have those memories. Live your life and do what makes you happy, not what others believe what will make you happy. Tomorrow is not promise. Tomorrow does not exist. Now is all we have. In the end nothing matters. We are all winging it and we are all on the same sinking boat that inevitably ends in tragedy. When the brain dies consciousness dies and we will cease to exist and eventually be forgotten. Drop the ego and character that you are playing and live. You only got one shot at. Don’t waste it. Smile, your alive

Remember you're alive, take with it the good and bad, it's through polarity that we can truly understand and appreciate the most beautiful experiences life has to offer.

Thats what I miss about drinking. Had to quit due to various issues. It forced me to live in the moment. Didnt feel compelled to take pictures. Didn't worry about the future. I'm sure that's the main appeal of drugs... Aside from the chemically addictive aspect.

Ive met so many "famous people" in my work at an airport and not once have i ever asked for a photograph or an autograph. I simply cherish the actual moment and dont need any record of it at all. The funniest was meeting Charles Barkley and putting him in a cab as his limo driver stood him up. He expected to be asked and as he sat in the cab, i fist bumped him and said have a good ride lol

Pain and suffering in this world outweighs peace and feeling good, in my experience. Is this really a beautiful arrangement, especially with the memory wipe in between lives? To do this over and over again, pain and suffering with tiny specks of joy here or there, no thanks, I'll pass.

Hope is limited and conceptual and so is the fundamental belief that the body is seperate to its environment. Nobody choosing this. Why not meditate on this beautiful arrangement and see that 'you' have never suffered, because - how can there be a you? Never then, always now.

@@HergreenmanThat might work for you, but try and tell people who suffer from chronic physical pain on the daily that they don't actually suffer. Maybe on some higher level of consciousness this could be the case, but i dont know because i have never experienced that, and i do not have beliefs. Belief is a waste of time and energy, either I know or I don't know.

@@dronesandothertones8902You make a good point. I would be less inclined to talk about no self to a person that is suffering physically, but as far as hope and beliefs go, they are just thoughts. This life can been seen as beautiful because its the base reality that this life belongs to no individual being. It's obviously co-existing with the cosmos.

This says much on biblical prophecy or predictions in general. Whether ego generated or misdirected intentions. Humanity shouldn't be warned of future events that haven't occurred. Otherwise, one will build bunkers, storing food and items of an event that may never occur. Spending so much time in the future, preparing for something that most likely will never happen, takes away from the moment one is actually living. ' But Ma, just let me finish listening to this song.' -'One of these nights,' by the Eagles.
