Just wanted to contribute some info to the comments: most clay cannot be directly heated like this without cracking. Types of clay that can are called “flameware.” They’re specifically formulated for this purpose, are more expensive to manufacture, and are generally more difficult to throw/build with than standard stonewares. Don’t try this with regular old clay as it’ll crack or at worst, blow up. Flameware like this can also be heated on gas burners and go under the broiler. You can usually bake in standard pottery ceramic, but it can’t usually stand direct heat. You can find flameware clay recipes and flameware glaze recipes online if you Google- that can be a place to start. I think there are a few clay manufacturers in the continental US who sell it too, if you’re willing to look for it and don’t want to make your own. Beautiful work! Love the kettle! I’ve been wanting to make with flameware too. PS if y’all will upvote this comment, other people will get to see it too. Cheers!

happen to know what kind of glaze that might be? i only see glossy, especially when it comes to holding liquid.

  • @StoneAndersonStudio

@@gedion4000 looks like some kind of semi-matte glaze. Glaze chemistry is really complicated and I’d guess this artist mixes their own glazes. Since it’s on flameware it probably has a really low Coefficient of Thermal Expansion so it’ll fit the flameware. Not all clay can be used like this, and not all glazes can be used on flameware safely. Matte glazes can hold liquid safely if they have the right qualities and are fully mature.

@@StoneAndersonStudio yeah i dont have any experiance with flameware but its something id love to try. part of the reason i asked about the glaze is most of them are WAY beyond me, and you seemed more knowlegable. i was right! i dont even attempt understanding glaze lol. Cheers, and thank you.
