I met Keith Moon at the Boston premier of the film "Stardust", in which he had a role. I was 14. I asked him what happened that time he passed out on stage. He glared at me and snipped, " Well, I really don't remember, young man, you see I was unconscious at the time".

@@suncat5160she looks pretty young, if that's her. Probably not a ton of Townshend fans among her social group. She projected her own feeling of isolation onto Pete; hence the empty audience. She's proud of her discerning taste and for being aware that following the crowd is not the way to fulfillment, but she still needs to build herself up sometimes (as we all do); hence the desire to applaud, to let him know she was there for him and appreciative. Remember: Pete is HER. However, she worries that concern for image is stopping her not only from fully being herself, but from fully being THERE for herself: the nail polish, which it never occurred to her to simply drop or put in her purse. She HAD to keep a grip on that, on that image, even if it meant silencing herself. Or. She was painting her toenails while listening to "Rough Boys," had some spicy chili, and passed out.

Townsend wrote “I Hope I Die before I get Old” because back then he was angry at the over 30 generation saying they were cold blooded. Then your generation gets older and you find your just as flawed as they were. Then what do you do? Die off or keep living? He decided to keep living. And I’m glad he survived because he has a keen mind and wrote great songs. The world would be poorer without his contributions to it.

“get the best seats” haha. I saw them in Mountain View 20 years ago. The front row seats were filled with Silicon Valley execs in formal wear, who SAT through the first few songs. The real fans were in the cheap seats at the back. So Pete stopped the show and literally cussed out the people in the front row. He said, “Who comes to a Who concert, takes the best seats, and sits?” Well they stood up, awkwardly I might add, for the rest of the show. The people in the back went nuts. That’s where the true fans were.

The first time I saw them live (November 1965) it cost me 7 shillings and sixpence (37p in today's money) and I was about 6 feet away from them. I meant Entwhistle back in the mid 90s, and asked him about his hearing damage. He also blamed headphones in the studio, NOT their loud concerts. I thought he was joking, but after hearing Townsend say the same thing, I suspect that he actually wasn't. Dang.

  • @MicahS70T5M

Dave Westner with loudspeakers (normal speakers like in a concert or home stereo) loud volumes produce much more distortion, because they literally need more power/movement to produce the same sound level than the relatively tiny headphone diaphragm does less than an inch from your ear. Often, distortion is largely what makes you recognize music as loud, even if you don't recognize it as distortion. But with very high quality and robust speakers or headphones which don't need much power to produce crazy SPLs, you can destroy your hearing without even knowing how loud it is. :) -Micah
