The White Tiger | One Scene Analysed - The Story Behind The Script | Netflix x Screenplayed

Ойын-сауық

Oscar® nominated writer and director, Ramin Bahrani, breaks down the confession scene in The White Tiger. In one of the most heartbreaking moments of the film, Balram’s masters betray his loyalty and force him into a desperate, life-changing situation.
Ramin spent a year adapting the screenplay from Aravind Adiga's bestselling book, and recalls how specific sequences were improvised on the shooting days, a collaboration between himself, the DOP Paolo Carnera and the cast, including BAFTA-nominee Adarsh Gourav, Rajkummar Rao, Vijay Maurya and Mahesh Manjrekar.
The White Tiger is now streaming on Netflix, nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay at both the 2021 Academy Awards and BAFTAs.

I loved the opening scene with an excellent analogy of the entire story - the rooster inside their cage's knowing that it would be their turn next for the slaughter and be served to their masters and still not doing anything to escape the situation .. Wonder.. wonderful film writing .. i love this kind of genre films - Social messaging at its best

I love both the film and the novel which I read while travelling 3 months in India in 2010-11. I saw India with different eyes after reading it. You did an excellent job with that script Mr Bahrani, this film is great so was Adarsh Gourav’s performance, what an immense actor. Toutes mes félicitations! From Montréal.

I wondered what was the snack they gave him? Did it have cultural significance?

They gave him paan, which is like a little package made out of beetle leaves containing some sweet aromatics, herbs, spices, and very commonly, tobacco. The tobacco is addictive and the beetle leaves stain your tongue and teeth red over time. It is cheaper than cigarettes so a lot of lower class people chew it regularly. It has become a symbol of an inferior class, as something gross since people often spit it out after chewing on roads and walls in public places, that many people, particularly the rich (like Ashok in the movie) scorn at. He made Balram stop chewing paan once he became his driver. In this scene, the Mongoose offers Balram paan as a friendly gesture, by giving him something he associates with earlier life.

Later in the film, when Pinky points out his stained teeth or bad breath or something (can’t remember), he buys toothpaste and furiously brushes his teeth, trying to get rid of the paan stains. In his internal monologue he feels angry that his father never told him not to eat paan, to brush his teeth and to not scratch his crotch in public. Paan is definitely a class thing now.
