The White Queen: Anne Neville meets Margaret of Anjou | 1x4

Ойын-сауық

The White Queen (2013) scene: Warwick the Kingmaker has turned on his former mentee and closest ally, Edward IV, and pledges allegiance to their former enemy, Margaret of Anjou and her husband, Henry VI. Margaret has become the leader of the Lancastrians because of her husband's mental illness and she is initially unwilling to accept Warwick's allegiance. Warwick played a leading role in deposing Henry VI, and Edward IV is unlikely to have become king of England without his support. His actions have earned him hatred from Margaret and her son, Edward of Lancaster. In the end, she agrees to accept him and betroth her son to his youngest daughter, Anne Neville, because she knows she needs his support to turn the tides of war in her favour.

No doubt about it Margaret of Anjou was formidable and almost downright frightening, there's a documentary about them, she's known as the she-wolf of France/England, along with Queen Isabelle of France, Empress Matilda, and Eleanor of Acquitaine.

@@justhistoire Oh yeah I think I remember watching it, but as for the book I've gotta pick it up and read it. And personally I can't help but admire them. I do believe that many had never encountered women like them before, but I like to believe that they were she wolves for another reason, not cause they were believed to be spiteful, but they were mothers, protecting their children's right. Any mother would go to any lengths to protect what should belong to their children, so they're secure. But of course with Margaret, she had also learned to govern from her mother and grandmother, seeing as how her father was imprisoned and she learned from the women around her. In a way these women did it all.

now I see why Game of Thrones Creator and Writer George RR Martin choosed Mary of Anjou and Elizabeth Woodville as inspiration to creates Cersei Lannister, both women with hunger for power, not the type to let a man grind her down, leader, lady killer, good and loving but strict mother, ambicious, femme fatale and mastermined.

@danieladelcastillolocatell5839 yup that is true. Cersei was actually based on several women in history as well as all the other players in the asoiaf series. These ladies did it all, and in that time it was rare to see a woman made from that kind of strong metal and fire. I also keep forgetting Catherine de medici was another such woman (after watching the serpent queen) these women had to be she wolves so they could survive, and conquer and thrive.

Gods Margaret of Anjou seems so badass here! The women during the Cousins War are so formidable and deserve attention from historians and Hollywood. I mean it wasn’t a war for men, it was the women behind the scenes that truly made this war so interesting. Marguerite of Anjou, The Lancaster Queen of England - the she-wolf, wife to King Henry VI and mother of Edward of Lancaster Margaret Beaufort - Matriarch of House Tudor, mother of Henry VII Elizabeth Woodville, The York Queen of England- The Commoner Queen, wife to Edward IV, mother to King Edward V, Richard of Shrewsbury and Queen Elizabeth of York Margaret of Burgundy, Duchess of Burgundy- sister to Richard III and Edward IV, wife to Charles the Bold Anne Neville, The York Queen of England - Kingmaker’s daughter, wife to King Richard III, mother of Edward of Middleham Isabel Neville, Duchess of Clarence - kingmaker’s daughter, wife to George Plantagenet, mother to Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury and Edward Plantagenet, 17th Earl of Warwick Cecily Neville, Duchess of York- wife to Richard, Duke of York, the rose of raby, mother to King Edward IV and King Richard III Jacquetta of Luxembourg , Dowager Duchess of Bedford and Baroness Rivers - wife to Richard Woodville, Baron Rivers, daughter of the royal House of Luxembourg

I can't imagine how it must have been a big risk to ally yourself with the very person whom you sought to dethrone for years. Margaret of Anjou had every reason to have Warwick killed, but she also knew that she lost two Edmund Beaufort and William de la Pole in the war. So, Warwick is a kingmaker and she needs some sort of strong backing if she were to reclaim her son's throne. And she fans up his fire to have his daughter Anne Neville be her son's wife and queen. I am not sure what sort of relationship between Anne Neville and Margaret and prince Edward is in real life. I think they were cautioned by each other but they bring in the smarts to give each other's advice. So it was a family with benefits to gain power.

Definitely. A lot of historians agree that Anne's marriage to Edward of Lancaster was never consummated because Margaret of Anjou wanted to annul it later, after Warwick had served his purpose (reinstating Henry VI as king, and her son as heir). Margaret was definitely very reluctant with the marriage (she actually delayed it for some time, until she Warwick had proved his rebellion was becoming successful), so she was definitely tolerating it for the sake of political and military success.

Technically, there were only two or three Yorkist kings. (Three, if you count Edward V.) But Edward IV and Richard III were very devoted to destroying the Lancastrians, and successfully did that during their lifetimes. Edward IV definitely wasn't a friend to House Lancaster, despite his wife's eventual alliance with Margaret Beaufort and Henry Tudor.

@@savagedarksider2147 You're right, Henry V did conquer France, and the Yorkists kings never did. Who knows what would have happened if Henry V lived longer--England might have kept France. But it's important to remember that the French king was suffering mental illness when Henry V invaded, and this played an important part of why France fell to England. Henry V's son, Henry VI, inherited that mental illness from his French mother's side, and that's why he was such an ineffective king (along with other reasons). The French crown didn't break away because Henry VI died too early--it broke away because the English king had no interest or talent in warfare and managing a country abroad. Henry VI lost the vast majority of France under his reign, which made his rule super unpopular, and enraged/frustrated some of the nobility (including Richard, Duke of York). He gave a lot of it away when he married Margaret of Anjou, which was an unpopular choice. Edward IV was a very talented military general and had a good chance of conquering France when he invaded, but he never had any serious interest in pursuing war and colonization/building empires etc. He mainly used the French invasion as a pretext for collecting money from Parliament and cancelled the invasion early once he was promised money. His brother Richard hated his brother's behaviour, and would have invaded France if he had reigned longer (he had a strong interest in warfare and colonizing/building empires etc). That's why France worked to replace him with Henry VII, who had no interest in claiming France.

And yes, Edward of Lancaster hasn’t been fully fleshed out or given a fair chance in this show. We know from some historical accounts that he wanted revenge etc. but that doesn’t mean that he was an evil person as this show suggests.

In the show, he held a grudge against her for the action of her father, Richard Neville aka "The Kingmaker", who overthrew the Lancastrians with the Yorkists and put Edward IV on the throne. The Nevilles were an important aspect of the initial Yorkist victory, and the Lancastrians (Margaret of Anjou and her son Prince Edward) never truly forgave them for it. His marriage to Anne Neville was done out of sheer necessity and the true need for Warwick's military support, not because they really wanted a relationship with their family. Some historians believe M of Anjou was planning to annul the marriage once they had the throne securely in their grasp and this might be why their marriage might not have been consummated before Edward's death.
