Description: The Wheel of Time Roleplaying Game is a role-playing game based on The Wheel of Time, an epic fantasy series by American author Robert Jordan.
The core rulebook is a 317-page large-format hardcover book. It was written and compiled by Charles Ryan, Steven Long, Christian Moore and Owen K.C. Stephens for Wizards of the Coast. Robert Jordan served as creative consultant and contributed an introduction, in which he revealed that he used to serve as Dungeon Master in Dungeons and Dragons games played by his stepson Will and his friends. The book has a cover by Darrell K. Sweet, who also provides the covers for the novels, and maps by Ellisa Mitchell, who likewise provides cartography for the novels. A large number of artists provide full-color art throughout the book.
The rulebook is based on the D20 rules system used by the third edition of Dungeons and Dragons, also published by Wizards of the Coast, and follows a similar layout and format to the D&D core rulebooks. However, the term 'Dungeon Master' is not used (as this is reserved for D&D products only), being replaced by the more generic 'gamemaster' to refer to the player running the game.
The concept behind the book is to provide a massive roleplaying campaign which runs alongside the storyline of the first six Wheel of Time novels. The campaign is broken into a series of five major episodes with a number of smaller 'mini-adventures' leading into the campaign or to serve as diversions between the main adventures. Robert Jordan has ruled the new information revealed in the book about certain characters (namely Mazrim Taim) non-canonical.

As a WoT fan I of course used to have this. Used to. Always keeping my eye out for a copy for the art alone. Was glad I could see it again after so long. Great video!

Good point about the templates. It strikes me that a lot of games have made the process of creature a character far too complicated. When I first played D&D it was 1st Edition Basic, and the character creation was very simple there. However, the issue was that the seven classes offered - effectively templates - were very bland. I suppose this was inevitable given that the game wasn't tied to a particular setting, unlike "The Wheel of Time" RPG.

Cheers for the comment, much appreciated. It leapt out at me as a brilliant addition when I was going through the rulebook, since D&D (and many other older games) don't do it, and while I don't know about other groups, mine often has someone dropping in for a session or two, so need a character quickly, which makes templates really useful.

@RPGGamer - if you look closely at the book, you’ll see a lot of things that are similar to 5e. For example, the way weave slots work in the WoTRPG is the same as 5e slots, not 3e slots (i.e. you don’t attack a specific spell to your slots).

I'm really starting to believe that we're all somehow linked, as coincidences are happening incredibly often to me recently. Either that or we're really in some Truman show like reality.

I read most of the novels as a teen so this was a nice nostalgia trip in addition to a great game overview video.

Cool. Hope I didn't get anything too wrong from just a brief look through the rules and a read of the Wiki.

This book might've been bought by some fans of the novels who weren't already gamers, but I don't think that d20 would be an ideal first RPG. Maybe the provided level 1 character templates were meant to help with that. One of the things that gave me pause about running it at the time was how gender and magic (or rather The One Power, the word "magic" is never used in the books as I recall) combine. Only women can channel the Power safely; men who have the Power are always at risk of corruption, and they can get their power taken from them if they're caught. I think players might find that restrictive on character concepts if they don't know the books and bring generic fantasy RPG character concepts to the table instead of Wheel of Time character concepts specifically. The background feats in this book were brand new to 3rd edition at the time. They also appeared in the 3rd edition forgotten realms book with locations in the Realms instead of the Wheel of Time world.

From just by brief read through the rules, I kind of got the feeling that everything was trying to just skip past the gender/magic divide, with so many, "Men don't get magic, but", parts in the rulebook.

It’s restrictive, but as a huge fan of the books, I think it’s done well. It has A LOT of roleplay potential, and can become fantastic as the plot of the books progresses.

If the gender thing is too much of an issue you can always make the setting in the age of legends or the fourth age where men can safely channel

@@RPGGamer You got it right. I find creating a character vary confusing and I'd like to see a video on how to make a character. A friend of mine helped me with the one I got now after I spent a few days of work before the help. One thing I've seen is that the camera is a little to close to the game boxes and books for me but I'll deal with it. You explain things well. Do you make a script or a list for talking points? From interviews I've seen from KZreadrs if you get stuck just ask yourself what you'd to see if you were looking into the subject, relax and be yourself, and have fun with it. Do videos because you want to not because you have too.
