The "West Somerset Railway" recreates the legendary "S&D".

Re-live the halcyon days of big steam locomotives working heavy holiday trains over the formidable grades of the Somerset and Dorset Railway (England). The West Somerset Railway “Spring Steam Gala” brings together many of the locomotive types that once worked the S&D between Bath and Bournemouth. To complete the scene the WSR stations take on the identities of long closed S&D stations. Whilst visiting this beautiful part of Britain I also take a quick look at the Lynton & Lynmouth cliff railway and the Lynton & Barnstaple narrow gauge railway at its Woody Bay headquarters, where I bump into another film maker Michael Dan creator of “Admiralscorner” on KZread.

    It was the best day I've ever had at the WSR, especially watching the double headed trains. The WSR put on some excellent galas, another of my favourites is their end of summer gala where they run both steam and diesel, a wonderful reminder of long hot summers spent watching trains on the Bournemouth mainline through the New Forrest in the early sixties. Happy Days 🙂.

    +ADMIRALSCORNER My favorite part of the day is watching the locos being prepared for the day ahead, I also enjoy the end of the day when the fire is being dropped and the ash pans emptied. Minehead is a great place to see all the action required for the trains to run. The drone does enable some unusual shots, but I still have a lot to learn. It is always nice to meet a fellow KZread contributor, it doesn't happen very often.

    Wasn't thinking of temporary repaints, agree too expensive. Thinking outside the box, can railways swop rolling stock as they do locomotives? Otherwise permanent repaints of a few carriages? WSR has an ongoing link with the S&D. Thanks for your reply, I just wanted to leave the idea out there to be picked up or not.

    Where heritage lines use mainly Mk1 stock, it would be nice to see rakes in colours representing the various regions. I don't know whether or not carriage stock needs to be registered to run empty over network rail between heritage lines. I know they have to be registered to carry passengers. Thinking of the Bluebell Railway Metropolitan set used by London Underground occasionally.

    You're getting the hang of the drone nicely, splendid shot of Blue Anchor. They just need to find some way to muffle the sound of them now. Lovely scenes of preparation at Minehead, though it rather looks (14:12) as if 53809 had been parked underneath somewhere the seagulls congregate, doesn't it.

  • @Timsvideochannel1

    @Timsvideochannel1

    +AndreiTupolev There is evidence of seagulls everywhere in Minehead, it is not a place to stand still for too long as I found out to my cost. I always enjoy watching and photographing the engines being prepared for the day. The drone offers lots of possibilities, but I think it will take me a while to learn where to use it and how to get the best out of the camera. There is no microphone on it, the sound was taken from another camera on the ground, but it needs to be much further away not to pick up the sound of the drone.

    Hi, I enjoy watching the guys preparing the locos ready to take up the days duties, everyone gets stuck in, sharing stories and the odd joke. The driver's take their roles seriously, either doing the oiling themselves or keeping a close eye on things. Running into Taunton's main station make so much sense, as people will be able to arrive by train with through ticketing putting the WSR on the National Rail Map. +Steve Lewis Video Channel. Hi Steve, I have been using this camcorder for over 4 years now, I was going to replace it, but when I looked around, the only suitable replacement was a 4K version of the camera I was already using ... a Sony Handycam HDR-PJ780VE ... the feature I like most about my current video camera, is the floating lens as it really reduces camera shake. Drones have dropped in price, although they are still expensive. As I decided to keep my main camcorder for another year, I opted to buy a DJI hand held Gimbal camera, it only arrived yesterday, so I have not had time to play with it yet. Going to the gala was a last minute decision, based on an improving weather forecast and my wife finding a great deal on a fantastic hotel in Lynton. It was nice to meet Dan, I did look out for you, hopefully my next visit will be longer, as it would be nice to catch up again, maybe breakfast at that lovely cafe on the seafront in Blue Anchor. My drone does not even have a microphone, the sound came from another camera I was using at ground level, but it was too close and picked up the drone noise. Whilst I was working, KZread videos were playing on my computer, I notice your video saying goodbye to your Harley and Peugeot, that must have been hard .... Take care .... Tim

  • @Timsvideochannel1

    +pega17pl Hello Heinz, I was pleased with the way the drone worked out. It is not like an ordinary video camera, as it is not ready at the push of a button. I missed a couple of shots because I could not get it into the air quickly enough, so filming where I did gave me plenty of time to get ready. As the battery life is relatively short, it is not possible to get enough shots to make a complete video without spending several days filming, so I think I will use it mostly as another camera angle combined with shots taken from the ground. Tim.

I am not sure about the route it took for the northern part of its journey. As you used it regularly between Crewe and Bletchley, that would indicate it used the West Coast main Line. I looked up named trains between London and Holyhead, the only one I found was the "Emerald Isle Express". If anyone reading this knows the complete route taken by the "Pines Express" please let me know and did the route change over the years.
