This sort of crap actually happens... a friend of mine was tricked into showing her private part for an unrelated issue. The doctor later was charge for sexual assaulting over a hundred patients, she was one of many that testified against him. At least two young women were raped. And yet, he didn't lose his license, cos he was about to retire or some stupid excuse. Always report health professionals that's not professional. Protect yourself. You can always say no.

When I was 11 or 12 we all had to get a jab unless we had a cold/flu like symptoms. Me not wanting a needle (I have zero problems with them now) told pokies and said I had a cold. The doctor who was in the principles office told me to come into this closet that there, to take my top off. He touched my partly developed breasts. How that related to me having a cold I don't know. Maybe more happened that I've blocked out. I forgot all about until I was 27. It didn't affect me what so ever just left me a bit like wtf! The lesson learned is my child will be watched like a hawk and will have no visits without me present. Too many cases have happened where patients have been drugged and rapped all sorts, always have someone with you. Can't bloody trust anyone!

As a teen a surgeon assaulted me. He convinced my mother to stay in the waiting room. His wife was his secretary & walked in on him groping me. She just looked dismayed, never said a word. I was completely alone with that monster. Parents, please join your children as long as they’re comfortable with it, and always make sure there’s a chaperone during examinations. It’s awkward & embarrassing, but always better than being preyed upon.

Also make sure you know what the doctor’s doing. Sometimes they’ll block what they’re doing from the parents with their bodies. If the child is young enough, they may not feel able to tell an adult no, especially if they don’t know that being a doctor doesn’t give you free range to do whatever you like with another persons body.

Reminds me of what goes on in Romania. Had gall bladder stones 8 pieces, each 1cm big, and bladder was about to burst, went in the ER public hospital and after the film they told me it's stomach ulcers. Got fed up with them plus was shitting myself from the pain and had the strength to go to a private clinic, surgeon was amazed and said if one more hour would have gone past I'd been history.

Reminds me of me KNOWING I had my 3rd urosepsis and the ER doc insisted to do a pelvic exam because "she needed to rule out it wasn't a problem with those organs instead because this was the third time in less than a month". I protested and said no. But it didn't work because if she couldn't do that then she wouldn't do the bloodworks and all either. F*cking blackmailing me into my trauma.

One time I was walking and I slammed my foot down kind of hard. My foot started hurting and I couldn’t walk on it normally. As the night went on it swelled up. I googled my symptoms and thought for sure I had a stress fracture. Went to the ER because I needed a boot or brace so that I could go to work the next day. We were there for hours and when I saw the doctor I told him that I thought I had a stress fracture. He said we will do x-rays to be safe. In the end I was told it was most likely a bug bite and to follow up with my pcp. I thought that sounded ridiculous but they wouldn’t listen to me. So I went to work the next day and limped around. In the middle of the day I got a call from the hospital and they told me that according to the x-rays I did in fact have a stress fracture. I had to go back down to the hospital and they gave me a shoe. I was wondering what good a shoe would do and I was right to expect it did nothing. When I got to the podiatrist a few days later the new x-rays showed that the fracture had gotten worse and turned into a break. There I was given an air cast. I always thought breaking a bone would be extremely painful. I think the doctors were confused because I wasn’t in that much pain. But still they were negligent.

Breaks often times don’t hurt when they first happen. This is a simplified explanation I’m about to give but basically our brains don’t fully realize that it’s possible for our bones to break. A combination of the naïve belief we all to some extent have that nothing bad will happen to us and “out of site out of mind”, our brains understand that we can accidentally get a cut when cutting carrots because we can see both the knife and our skin. Since we can’t see out bones our brains just kind of forget they exist. So when a break does occur our brains immediately flood our bodies with adrenaline and in a way send us into survival mode while it processes what just happened. When you’re in survival mode the adrenaline you experience blocks out a lot of feelings and things as your brains only concern is staying alive, one of the things that is often blocked out is pain.

I had pneumonia and pleurisy when I was 20, and the consultant on the ward would only listen to my chest while I was topless. I knew this wasn't right, and the female HCA that was chaperoning did too but neither of us had any power in that situation. The irony is that the stethoscope was invented so women could be examined while clothed. This was only around 15 years ago too, not in a different era when things were different.

As far as I know, bra's can intefere with the noise of your lungs/hearts when breathing. You can still cover/hold them with your hands though, they don't have to measure 'through' the breasts. You can then also hold them up if they need to measure below.

  • @lpagliacco

The stethoscope was invented so the ear doesn't have to be placed ON the chest directly. Sorry to be that person, but with 100 likes, I don't want misinformation to spread and paint all healthcare workers as pervs or worse. Likely with pneumonia the differential was narrowed, but if someone comes with a chest pain + difficulty breathing, you don't want to gamble with the patient's time-sensitive health by guesswork. If this consultant insisted you take off clothes fully (despite there being many ways you can still cover the non-examined parts) to ogle at you at your vulnerable state, yeah that's wrong, and that guy should be reported. Otherwise? You're mistaken. Sorry not sorry. Google lung sounds/heart murmurs and have a listen. They're usually distinguishable when directly placed, but over some form of clothes/restrictive garments? Good effing luck. You know what's not right? Not auscultating properly and sending an otherwise easily treatable patient into intensive care after dismissal.

@@thedancingemt Please don't try to dilute what I'm saying. You said it yourself. If you needed. In an urgent settings to obtain vitals etc of course I agree you can. That said, this commenter (patient at the time) was in with cardio/pulm complaint leaning towards pneumonia/pleurisy diagnosis. Once you are sure the pt has the vitals/is stable, how do you further plan the care? You assess with examination and ruling out. Not gonna repeat my points from a month ago--I still stand by it. (Allow patient dignity but examine to the level necessary--which in some case does require uncovering--to provide the best care). Since you appealed to authority with an EMT (student might I add, but if you finished, congrats) I too will mention that I'm an MD (student) here. I'm sure you had your share of patients who refuse care to their detriment from misunderstanding/prejudice. Don't make this worse by making gen public think that auscultation can always be done with clothes on, and therefore all docs who do not are terrible people or something.

My doctor wrote that I would "consider an abortion" on my file for no reason. I said "what's that on my File?" ...ABORTION in big Block Letters. I said I Never Had an ABORTION. I had a Miscarriage after 3 weeks. I nicely asked her on the Phone to remove it. I said it's not correct and it shouldn't be there. SHE SAYS IN A WHISPERY VOICE "I AM SORRY THAT YOU FEEL THAT WAY". I tried to calmly ask her why....she Repeats it! 3 times. I'm Sorry That You feel That Way. So then she wrote down that I bullied her on the phone and was aggressive with my tone and no other doctor will take me on a patient because they all talk. Like a high school. All lies.

She's right, doctors do seem to have a knack for trying to get you undressed and put fingers where you don't want them so to speak. I remember at one point in my life I was thoroughly convinced that my doctors were trying to turn me into a sock puppet. I would be going to the doctor and every time they wanted to puts something up my backside be it a finger or a camera and I told them that my family had a history of gallbladder problems and that doctor would not believe it was my gallbladder. He retired and I got a new doctor. After reviewing my records and seeing notes that I said I had a family history he said "I assume the Dr (name redacted) checked your gallbladder." I said that he didn't and that guy ordered tests and sure enough it was my gallbladder. After removing it I have been fine and have sorta avoided doctors. I suffered for years because the first guy wouldn't just test my gallbladder.

I heard, third hand, about a Doctor allegedly performing breast exams on teen females, as part of medical checkups for Summer camps. Teen breast cancer is rare.

Yep, that happens. I went for a rash on my hand and he checked my butt as well which I didn't think was necessary. I don't want to ever go back.

my mom used to make jokes about this all the time - "doctor, i have terrible headaches." "right then, take off your clothes." or "doctor, my arm hurts where i fell on it." "right then, take off your clothes." etc. things are somewhat better these days, but clearly not all doctors.

"....and how many units of alcohol do you consume each week?" (thinking) It's about 40, but I can tell her that. Errrr. 20ish or there abouts, approximately in the ballpark or something the like. Phew, dodged a land mine there.

When I was 23-24(?) I went in to establish care after moving. The NA and her trainee (so, 2 women in this instance) asked about my last pap. I had to admit I had not had one (I moved a lot). They were like "Oh, should we do that now?" and I was like "Uh, no!"

I was 16 years old, had diarhea, vomiting, strong belly pain and fever. First day my doc said it maybe a virus, stay home (at this point there were weak symptons) 2 days later my mother called the doc, cus I could not get up from the bed due to the pain. He said, whe should do in the next morning for blood test cuz maybe is a strong "pee infection" (sorry dont know the english words) He checked me and sent to the hospital as it's maybe an appendicitis. In the hospital 4 doc checked on me, and send out my mother, cuz they thougth I'm pregnant just afraid to say it in front of my mom. Thanks only to the bloodtest they made I was operated that day for appendicitis
