The weirdest camera ever.

Фильм және анимация

The one and only Ikonokop Ikonoskop A-Cam Dii. A weird and beautifully cinematic camera that I have fallen in love with. Thank you to Alex and Pete at acamnyc.com for supplying the camera, and for answering all of my questions. If you are in NYC and want to use the camera, let them know. Also thank you to Austin for bringing up this camera late night in the discord a few days ago. I was previously unaware that this gem of a camera existed!
sensor is super 16 size (ish)

There's a travel video on KZread called Summer in Japan by Jonathan Yi that he shot with the Ikonoscop A Cam. He's a professional DoP who shoots high end commercials, so it makes sense that he might use a very obscure but high quality camera while travelling. This camera was a mix of ahead of and behind its time, offering raw capture with a Super 16 sensor. I think a few independent features were shot with this.

Skin tones SOOC are super good. Dynamic range feels about on par with a 2015 DSLR-which for a super 16 CCD sensor is pretty awesome. Form factor really opens up a lot of interesting shooting rigs. I’ll just leave it at that and see what kind of ideas anyone else has. For my part, I’d rather have 1080 with RAW than 4K without, but for the moment I live in a world where nobody wartches my stuff on anything bigger than a laptop monitor (if that).

Neat camera and material! This might have been covered but a friendly tip, the color space is "Linear", which means the color and luminance mapping is effectively compacted. In the future, if you play around to transform the linear to log, your tonality will smooth dramatically in its gradation across your IRE scale. Then you will not have lumps in your highlights, and not have to dig so hard with highlight recovery. This is very similar to workflows with ProRes Raw (which is also linear). Happy experimenting!

@@BlaineWestropp1 Unfortunately, I can't recall the price, other than it being an expensive camera. However, I found an old article in a Swedish tech magazine from 2009 (Ikonoskop was a Swedish company), that wrote that the cost of the pre-orders (in 2009) were 7200 SEK (Swedish Crowns), or approximately 650 USD, and this pre-order cost was for 10% of the final price. So, the camera seemed to have cost 72k SEK or 6.5k USD. Hard to say if this was indeed the final price though, as I don't think the camera actually launched until a couple years later. (Apparently, 6.5k USD in 2009 adjusted for inflation to 2023 is around 9.2k USD) What did you get the camera for in 2023?

Was a great idea from very innovative people who already had a success with their s16mm crashcam. They literally crrated the digital s16mm in a fantastic way. I think the storage tech was simply behind their innovation level, it was also expensive for its target group. They sold the company to a rental I think, it was a sad day.
