Blackmagic Design Cinema Camera 6K Full Frame L Mount Camera. I have always loved the simplicity of Blackmagic Design cameras. In this video I go over some features I like on the new BMCC full frame camera. In this video I used the Leica 35mm f/2 ASPH APO-Summicron-SL lens. It is very nice. The camera is great to use, and the footage is beautiful. It also behaves very well in davinci resolve, and is easy to color grade. This is a great camera for a variety of people, even those just starting out. You get a lot of camera, at a great price. Don't sleep on the eyepiece either!
All of the music I use is from Audiio. Get 70% off your first year with the code Blaine70 at audiio.com/blainewestropp They have an AI link match where you can paste a link to any song and it will give you results from their library that match the feeling and tone of the song you gave it. I use this all the time and it is amazing :)

Also, thank you Lensrentals (which I have been using for over 12 years!) for getting me the extra pieces I needed (memory card, ND filter, lens) in less than 24 hours! Lensrentals: shorturl.at/asOP7
the mic I use, which seems to just sound better the more I use it and is quite affordable: amzn.to/3vISeTW

    I had a 6k Pro and loved it, moved over to a Komodo and sold it but I wish I still had my old 6k Pro a lot. Quick boot time and the simplicity of picking it up was always awesome, not to mention the CS was brilliant IMO. If they ever make a sturdier body with better form factor (hate the DSLR style body) I will 1000% buy one again.

Helps outdoors in bright light, helps in studio when there are a lot of people and ideas around. Only get the battery grip of youre running out of battery often. Those are just my opinions.

    Great concise video. I have mine since November and it's a joy. I'd like to know more about the lens you used, that APO-Summicron-SL 35 f/2 ASPH with the Blackmagic for sure is a killer combo,... do you prefer the IQ of a modern leica lens vs. a Leica R, for example? I've been wondering about getting some cinema glass, but I'm not quite sure if it's worth the investment. Cheers

  • @BlaineWestropp1

    @BlaineWestropp1

    It sure is a joy. Love it. As far as the modern vs vintage Leica, I don’t have a firm answer as I haven’t side by side tested them. Lately I have developed a liking for the contax zeiss lenses. I have some and have adapted them. For owning lenses, if you can get tried and true vintage for a good price, it could be worth it over buying cine lenses that are 10x the cost. All depends how you plan to use them really. For me currently, I like owning the vintage (but clean) lenses, and renting other lenses for any projects I do.

    Interesting that you’re hearing that it is “not worth it” the only other proper viewfinder that comes with a camera… costs over $100k. So when I looked through this viewfinder I felt that it was amazing that it had one. I guess depends on how you work. I think a lot of people complaining may not have had much experience with shooting with viewfinders. The purpose, in my opinion is to see an image in a dark space so that the light around you isn’t messing with vision. You don’t spend a whole day in the viewfinder. You look through it periodically. Multiple comments regarding people complaining about the camera which I think is so interesting. Maybe I need to watch some videos on KZread about this camera!

    Love this opinion. I have been a fan of Blackmagic's stuff for a while - we often use an URSA Mini (G2 4.6k) as a B CAM for interview setups with an LF or Mini as our A CAM. Exciting to see the new full frame option. What are your thoughts regarding lack of internal ND's? Did that come up as a hinderance during your use of the camera? To me, and I think a lot of folks, that is a big drawback of the camera over perhaps the 6K Pro.

    Internal ND is nice for sure. But.. if I’m walking around or in a situation where I can’t put a matte box on the camera, I don’t mind using a circular. If I am shooting the way I like to shoot, there is a mattebox on the camera, and a box of filters, regardless of internal NDs, so for me personally, I don’t mind. Also one thing I don’t think people do too much that they should do, is just get fixed circular ND filters. That being said I understand the desire for internal. All depends what type of stuff you shoot and how you like to operate.

    Hey bro! It’s me again lol. So wanna let you know (because I know your shoot Arri a lot) that there is a color conversion available that ports braw log footage to arri log c. Then you can use the arri Rec 709 lut and also any of the arri look luts or any other logc powergrades/luts you might use. The color conversion is by Emotive color. Basically the guy programmatically (he has a very legit setup) maps the sensor readout from the input camera to the input readout of arri. I use the conversion and have done EXTENSIVE blind tests and the BMlog to logc to the arri rec709 always looks better than bmlog to bm rec709. It is a log to log conversion so non destructive and you can treat the whole grade as logc (I start with an exposure mode, then the log to log) then the rest of the pipeline is treated as logc. It is only available for certain cams. I use the p6k one. I have found braw to be pretty consistent so the conversion works great on any braw. I also shoot braw on my s5iix and the conversion works great. Hit me up if you have any questions. I know you have an eye for the nuances in images. You will instantly be like OMFG. It is pretty crafty what this guy did with sensor mapping. P.s. just picked up a pancolar 50mm 1.8 to match with the 20mm and 35mm jenas. The 50mm looks great too!

    @@BlaineWestropp1 bro… you gotta try it’s worlds different from regular raw tab stuff. He did physical sensor mapping in a controlled environment, both cameras present, with custom software. The reason… emotive is actually translating what the input camera saw vs what the arri saw. He does it in a physical lab setup using a program he wrote. Put it this way… we were looking to add a ronin 4D to our fleet for some scenarios. The only thing that stopped us was that an emotive conversion has not been done for it yet. I thought maybe we had confirmation bias so we did blind tests. The emotive conversions literally change the camera in our workflow. Aside from dynamic range obviously not being an Alexa. Everything else image wise changes. Final note (applies to native logc and logc created using emotive). We do not use the davinci logc to 709 lut. We use the logc to 709 downloaded directly from arri. There are differences.

    I have heard people complain about the form factor vs. a box camera, not being able to rig it as easily is the main complaint. I have owned neither a pocket camera or a box camera so im wondering how you feel about the form factor in professional use? Edit: Also, would you happen to know if the cropped in formats are over sampling from the full sensor or is its just a crop in?

  • @BlaineWestropp1

    @BlaineWestropp1

    5 ай бұрын

    The cropped formats crop in on the sensor. For the form factor, it really depends what you want to do and how you want to rig it. Any rigged camera ive ever used has tons of stuff attached all over the place, cables everywhere, etc. everything is custom rigged for every job. I would check out the cage options and see if that will get you where you want. Are people wanting to attach monitors to the camera? For this camera, it has a large monitor. It has an eyepiece. So it has what you need to get the shot. It’s hard to answer the question really bc it is so much on a case by case basis and depends how and what you want to shoot. Look at an alexa mini.. it’s a tiny box but you can’t do anything with it until you add 10-15 pounds of rigging, doesn’t make me complain about it.

I’m totally fine being limited to 100-1000 ISO, but just saw that you ran it all the way up to 12800 😆. Just wanted your thoughts on how usable it was. 2. What’d you think about the rolling shutter performance for open gate? I know you do quite a bit of “rigged” stuff, so you might not have noticed much. I’ve just heard some mixed reviews on whether the gyro stabilization works well or not. Thanks as always man ✌🏻

    I felt the high ISO values performed great, but need to test further. also need to test further regarding rolling shutter and gyro. I do know though that the smaller the sensor area you are working with, the faster the readout speed, the better the rolling shutter performance. I also find that I prefer larger sensors when on wider lenses, and stuff on wider lenses (at least the way I shoot) doesn't get too affected by rolling shutter. if I am shooting beyond 50mm I dont care what the sensor size is. so maybe something I would consider is shooting more cropped modes for handheld stuff that isn't super wide.

    I got one recently and it’s far less digital than my a7siii. Can’t really explain it other than it seems to have more texture and depth

    I always found BM a nightmare to grade - def doesn’t have that slap on Log C Arri LUT and marvel at screen moment. Still, I did get nice results from the cameras using anamorphic glass once for a shoot.

    ive seen a lot of good looking images from them over the years. I think the new color science is nice and found I could get the image to where I want it fairly easy. when was the last time you had footage from one of the cameras in resolve?
