The Weird Ways to Adapt Mary Jane | Video Essay

Фильм және анимация

Mary Jane was something Stan Lee was on all the time in 70s, in order to activate his imagination, because how else can you explain the creation of big purple dudes eating planets with his pal a surfer dude made of silver.

It's not that hard to remember; they just have the same initials, that's it. When you think about it, people are mostly just complaining about them having the same initials, that's it. I remember hearing this news story before Stan Lee passed away; Zendaya was reamed out online because of her skin color, as everyone thought she was going to play Mary Jane Watson. Stan Lee stepped in, and you know you're in trouble if he steps in. He said, 'What I hear is she is a very talented actress. Don't judge her by her skin color; give her a chance.

As a current teen girl, I’ll just say this: MJ is a really accurate depiction of current teenagers. That’s why we like her. She’s familiar to us because she’s like us. The amount of teen girls obsessed with true crime is kinda crazy, and I’m one of them too. I think we all went through a Black Dahlia phase. And her whole demeanor and aesthetic is appealing too. If she were in my class, I wouldn’t question it. I’ve seen the SJW complaints and the “she’s too edgy” complainants, but honestly, I don’t think either of those are entirely accurate. It’s a bit annoying that whenever someone just does something slightly deviating from a socially accepted norm, they’re either weird or edgy. When I think of edgy, I think of a person who writes self insert creepypasta fan fiction with themselves in a relationship with Jeff the killer while they complain in the author’s note about how school is just legal torture or something insane like that. MJ likes true crime, sits kinda alone at lunch, and wears more boyish clothing and boom, she’s too edgy apparently. I guess that maybe there’s a generational disconnection between those who love MJ and those who hate her. Then again, she was meant to appeal to and fit in with gen z so I’m not shocked that older people may not enjoy her.

When it comes to Raimi Mary Jane one thing I really liked about her was how she has a full life outside of Peter. Sure they keeping coming back into one another’s lives, but we get to watch as Mary Jane tries to live out her dreams of stardom starting out at the bottom in the original film as a waitress, getting used in billboard ads and plays in the sequel, and getting a short stint on broadway in the third film before ending up back where she started as a waitress/lounge singer. It’s not often you see a superhero film let the love interest live like that. As for Michelle, what she lacks in depth, she makes up for in personality. I love how unapologetically herself she is. She keeps some stuff under wraps sure, but for the most part it isn’t really a front. That’s just how she is.

Sam Rami's MJ in concept was perfect in my opinion, even though she didn't have the screen time for her story to fully develop. She's the girl next door, coming from a broken home longing to be seen. Therefore, she puts on the party girl-persona to be popular and get seen. However, what she truly wants is to act on stage and get seen by everyone, something she keeps hidden inside until Peter asks her about her dreams. That's why she falls for him, because he's the first one who shows that he really sees her and cares. On the outside she might seem like Peter's opposite in many ways, but on the inside they are both outsiders. That's why she works, even though she at first might seem like a screaming damsel in distress to most

MoreThan1alent you have me a bit confused, but granted that I understand you correctly - of course there are, and even though I don’t agree that’s perfectly fine with me. Like the video explains, there’s two main ways to interpret the MJ from the comics: either as she is, or as what she’s was created to represent in the present day society she lives in. I’d argue that my explanation does both, based on my own experiences, both personal, friends and even girls I’ve dated. I’ve always been “Peter”, the one who cares about others dreams and wellbeing, etc, often at the cost of my own mental health but acting like normal and nothing’s wrong, and lot’s of people I’ve been there for have been “MJs”. People who are a complete different person in public just too feel seen and accepted. That’s why the Rami-trilogy resonates with me to this day, so granted there’s a lot of personal bias in my opinion

I wonder if MJ was just supposed to be relatably current. Early 2000’s current and relatable was fractured families and finding out these things give us problems throughout our lives, which is why MJ portrayed that. I think that fits more with the spirit of “friendly neighborhood Spider-Man” because she’s partly there to represent the state of the neighborhood, and he’s there with her trying his best because he cares regardless of which version she is depending on the time period because it’s always his neighborhood and she’s always MJ.

After Far From Home, I was completely sold on Peter and MJ. Their interactions and eventual relationship feel incredibly real and age appropriate in a way that most stories set in high school don’t capture. The actors’ chemistry works wonders, too, and may be the key for it coming across so well. Because it’s so successful in the sequel, it’s disappointing that they didn’t use MJ more effectively in Homecoming. While I enjoyed her vibe, she felt so divorced from the rest of the story. Better integrating her into Peter and Ned’s little circle of weirdos (without actually dragging her into Spidey related things) would have been appreciated. I liked Mary Jane in the Raimi trilogy fine enough, maybe more so because of Kirsten Dunst than anything else. Compared to MJ in Homecoming, she‘s way better integrated, but she absolutely feels like she exists as an object for Peter, a reward or a sacrifice, depending on the storyline. Her trajectory comes off as tragic in a way, like every step she takes away from Peter to be her own person results in some failure that brings her back to him. All in all, I enjoy the MCU MJ far more, despite the fact that we rarely get glimpses of her out of the context of her relationship to Peter. Her storyline feels so much more joyful than Raimi MJ’s, which seems ironic given that her personality is less outwardly warm. It puts a genuine smile on my face when I watch her and Peter together.

  • @mrsb50

giftofgab247 I agree that MCU MJ hasn’t been given enough to do and I want to see her have more opportunities to develop outside of the love interest/quirky comedy relief role. But for me, not having any strong ties to any particular past version of MJ-Raimi MJ was who I was most deeply exposed to, with the wet blanket MJ of the newspaper comics in a distant second-I like that they’re trying something different, not relegating her to the role of Professional Kidnappee and Screamer, even if it’s not completely nailing it from all angles. All due respect to Raimi and his aesthetic, but I could do with about 5000% fewer scenes featuring screaming women in his trilogy. I feel like the Raimi trilogy and the MCU Spideys can coexist without it needing to be a fight to the death. Like he said in the video, they have very different approaches and influences behind them. I’ve been enjoying the MCU ones more overall, but I still think the Raimi films are generally solid, with 1 and 2’s high points making up for a lot of 3’s missteps. I admit, though, now that they cast an age appropriate, likable actor in the role of Peter, it’s hard to go back to near-middle-age Toby Maguire and the storylines where he was at his most insufferable. But I know I’m in the minority there!

The MCU spiderman movies suck, they are entertaining but thats it. There's no absolutely no character arcs of any of the side characters and they are just there for a laugh every now and then. They are like robots that operate around their own little domain and dont effect the plot or the protagonist in anyway. Peter didnt care about MJ at all throughout the first movie and then suddenly in the second we are supposed to accept that he likes her now. There is no chemistry or spark either,it all feels soo forced and scripted. Who tf even is Ned. FFH did ruin the side characters more by introducing more of them but without any role except for comedy. But Homecoming didnt do a great job at it either. Even spiderman doesnt feel like spiderman, only his age is accurate. The Raimi movies MJ was irritating at times because but she was still a full developing, humane and flawed character. My favourite still was Gwen And Peter, you could see the chemistry between them and it was and still is the best portrayal of a modern spiderman. Spiderman PS4 and Spiderman 2 are still gold.

Great analysis! I also think it's worth mentioning that Peter’s and Mary Jane’s relationship in comics is unique to itself as well. Unlike in the films, their both strangers who meet on a blind date in college whose relationship grows from friendly acquaintances to a married couple. The point of Spider-Man was to create a character the audience could group along with. Peter and MJ’s relationship in the books is a reflection of that idea. Most people don’t end up with their childhood crush (Raimi) or get married to their high school boyfriend/girlfriend (MCU)...but for a lot of people, the person they end up with will most likely be a stranger. Someone who might’ve seemed like they fell out of the sky and/ or someone they might not have even considered beforehand (In Peter’s case - because of how different MJ was to him). Regardless, that’s how a lot of long-term relationships come to be. I've always liked that about comic Peter and Mary Jane and I wished the movies reflected that...

The little looks she gives Peter here and there are so great to watch and analyze as they clearly convey that despite her icy exterior, she does care a lot about him and has for a long time. And it’s cute how much she lights up at the end of FFH when she puts herself out there and finally is reciprocated. I also love that she and Peter are so supportive of each other. She fully embraces him being a superhero with one brain cell and fights to help him and protect the others, and he doesn’t like her despite her interest in dark stuff, he likes her for it and encourages her to be open about it. That’s more genuine than half of the other romances I see in other shows or movies.

Raimi's MJ was written to be more layered and a bit more truthful as the series went on, whereas Peter's characterization was an arc of maturity, learning three different lessons throughout the course, ultimately tying off as the two began to mend whatever flaws they themselves have. It's not just shown to each other, but to the audience as a whole. MJ came from a disruptive, damaged, non-loving background whereas Peter was raised with the exact opposite background. They're foils to each other. I'm not saying that people should root for her, but try to understand where her circumstances came from. They're both well-rounded characters that are believable in this trilogy, and it's a shame that people haven't grown to learn that at all, despite the age of this series. She's a heavily underrated character, even though she has the tenacity to push through her own dilemmas without the need of Peter's assistance. MCU MJ so far is literally just lol quirky gang gang.

Feli Aslan is what's wrong with today's world -- people like them; and why cinema is able to gradually, and successfully, alter every story people grew up with to a more "culturally accurate" version _(politically correct term for "out with the old, in with the new")_ . They make these changes and don't give a shit because it's all about money -- nothing more, and nothing less. Also, look up what a "boomer" is before you start calling everyone around you one. You look like an idiot using words you clearly do not know the meaning to.

I love Michelle as a character, I think she's perfect. I LITERALLY HATE that they revealed her to be MJ. What's the point of shoehorning that history and expectation onto this character!? she lost a lot of mystery and potential the second it was revealed. her name isn't even Mary-Jane. it's just MJ because you know that name! ha gotcha! stupid. she's perfect as Michelle, an original character that's friends with peter in high school. she didn't NEED to be anyone from the comics.

I disagree. Spiderman might not be a love story first, but his relationships are iconic. It is an expectation of the audience that he will fall in love with Gwen or MJ. Let's not forget this is a comic book movie, we have high expectation to relation to the source material. I love Zendaya's charecter. I would not have accepted her as the love interest in the second movie if they didn't call her MJ. She is brilliant as a friend to Peter in th first movie, I would have expected this in the second, but, because she is (a version) of MJ that love interest is automatically expected and accepted in the second Holland movie

@@user-gk2sc4ky4i I honestly would love an interpretation of black cat in that socially "apart" narrative Michelle represented in Homecoming. Naming her MJ is criminal, it'd be 20 times more effective to use Zendaya (very talented actress so far) in a challenging role such as that. What the Marvel Spiderman lacks, decidedly, is the traditional hole that Gwen occupies in most comic spider narratives. The "first love", and the most influential in Peter's later thought patterns, and in reality, the one love interest that was most "alike" him, in skill, demeanor and educational leanings. Without having Gwen, you lose a lot of nuance, and subsequently make MJ a very very annoying character (ala Kirsten Dunst version).

So its nice to have fresh new start in my opinion like i want something that is at least once not comic Accurate. And they seemed to want Zedaya to play MJ so i think thats why they name MJ in a diferent name cuz fans will react really crazily becuz she's not like the iconic MJ

I personally didn’t like Zendaya’s MJ which is so sad cause I’m such a huge Zendaya fan. They made it look like she had a significant role but really was not a friend nor love interest in the first movie with like 5 minutes screen time total. There isn’t much material to go off of and their relationship felt so rushed in the second one because the simple question of why either of them like each other is never answered. They don’t have any banter or cuteness or anything that makes them feel like a couple. And it’s not because they’re teens because even the adorable awkwardness could’ve been a approach to them but instead it was uncomfortable whenever hey were on screen together. This is particularly odd because they have great chemistry outside of the movie it’s shame it went to waste

When it comes to Gwen & Mary Jane I love them both. However, Gwen was a victim of the time she was created and the writers just not knowing what to do with her. Despite their flaws The Amazing Spider-Man films gave more dimension to Gwen and played a huge role in introducing the character to the masses. Also TASM Gwen isn’t just a blonde Mary Jane which many people think. She doesn’t exhibit any of the quirks of MJ. Gwen isn’t a party animal that wants to be the cake that everyone gets a slice of. She’s was a brilliant scientist that was Peter’s intellectual equal.

Personally I just don't like Michelle at all because FFH lies when it says "she got growth/depth". No, there really wasn't much there. My brother and I adored her in Homecoming before we realized she was the MJ of the MCU. I think if she was just a standalone character that was not associated with MJ at all, a lot more people would be accepting (and yes that DOES have to do with the race). I just cannot fathom why they couldn't make a whole new love interest or pick one of his plentiful choices. As someone who cannot relate to her whatsoever, even as a teenage girl, I just feel like there is a huge lack of depth and reality to her. She just sits there, not doing much, and in FFH is suddenly pushed to the forefront to be the "love interest" out of the blue. Then again I have a lot of gripes with the MCU Peter and the writing, especially how he just randomly blurted his identity to her for barely any reason at all. All I see is Zendaya, a childhood star I've grown up with, be a shoehorned love interest with barely any qualities outside of "look at me I'm a loner that struggles to be close to ppl b/c of my own insecurities/who I am" which might fit with this version of Peter, but have they forgotten that Black Cat already does that so much better? So many other pre-existing characters do it better? I just wish they had done something different. Lizz was acceptable for what she was and she had an actual role. Michelle is pieces of mirrored glass that looks like it has depth on the outside but there really isn't jack in there outside of basic untouched traits that the writing barely attempt to make seem like more. All I ask is that they do something proper with her, but ever since Endgame the MCU writing has been atrocious, and with the direction the current Spider-man is going, I have no faith they will expand on her character and she will become the typical side-chick to the plot that only serves as a failed grounding piece compared to that of MJ or Gwen (comic and movie versions) because she has barely any good advice nor helpfulness displayed (outside of what accidentally stumbling upon an object??? smh).

I think calling Michelle "MJ" was more of a reference than an adaptation. I have a feeling that she's meant to be Peter's first love, similar to Gwen. Maybe the MCU will pull a switcheroo and have MJ die and Gwen live.

It's like Robin John Blake in Nolanverse Batman. He's not Dick, Tim, or Jason, or Stephanie, but the name is a nod to them.

But why does Peter randomly get a crush on Michelle when he had 0 interest before?

@REGINA ADU I really hate everytime someone says "because they're teenagers" to excuse poor writing. Countless writers have done their best to show people that teenagers are more than sidekicks, or rebels, or the black sheep of society. Stan Lee himself said the reason he made Spider-Man a teenager was to show that teenagers can be great characters too. What a shame that MCU Spider-Man spits on this idea, and the fans defend it enthusiastically.

That's a very disingenuous question there. If you say he got the crush 'randomly' then of course there's not going to be a reason for it, since it's random. If you actually wanted an explanation for why Peter likes Michelle in the second movie, maybe don't assume the conclusion in your question? It puts people off from wanting to provide an answer, since you seem predisposed to decline any answer they give regardless of how valid it may be.

@@nanda12345ful I agree about the whole, "because they're teenagers" thing, but you have to remember, maybe it was not because of them being teenagers. It could have simply been REGINA ADU guessing the reason wrong. If you seen all the other avengers/marvel movies, you'll realize that the time IS sorta messed up. Also, (I forgot where, but I think it was Tom Holland who said this in a interview,) Far from home starts like...5 (months of years I can never remember, I think it was months.) After endgame. That gives a lot of time for their relationship to have developed off screen. Homecoming itself started not at *the beginning of how Peter got his powers,* yadadada, but It started near the middle of the semester/school year. Peter had already gotten his powers. Michelle, admittedly, is a side character and her story between her and Peter aren't exactly the focus of the movie. It's more about the mysterio stuff.

I really dislike how overhyped the modern MJ is right now. I do understand why she is popular but she has nothing interesting to offer. I have a feeling the Amazing Spider-Man’s MJ was going to be the best. The only MJ adaptation that I like is the video game one.
