The Weird Fairytale where Everything is Reversed
Фильм және анимация
This weird story was ahead of it's time, but also very very obsessed with the past. It breaks all the traditional fairy tale rules... but then sticks to them in the most decadent, over-the-top ways!! This old strange fairytale has everything - extremely evil fairies, the weirdest-named princess, sleeping prince beauties, a weird eyeball and tooth, curses, enchantments, ogres, mythological references, goddesses Hestia, Vesta, Aphrodite, Venus (just to name a few), oblivious fathers, helpful fairy godmothers (of sorts), and the weirdest gifts so far from fairies. On this animated adventure, we look at Princess "Fairer-than-a-Fairy" sometimes "Fairerthanafairy" (yeah that's a mouthful) and everything she has to go through to save her Prince Rainbow. I also dive into some of the origins of the old lore, mythology, and symbolism in this fairy tale. This Once Upon a Time is certainly weird, and I think you'll appreciate this twisted Happily Ever After. So, let's save a prince?

Ok, but as a DM whose players requested the next storyarc take place in the Feywild, this story is a goldmine of inspiration. I will now be incorperating the catfishing rainbow as an NPC, thank you for covering this hidden gem of a fairytale.

If I'm correct, I believe that the "one eye, one tooth" idea was also derived from Greek Mythology. In Perseus' myth, there are the Greae, who are three sisters who share an eye and a tooth between them. Perseus steals them to force them into telling him where the Gorgons' Cave is

It also has a big difference from other fairy tails in that the two lovers get to know eachother over time. From the way told, they are talking over and over again in short blips every day. Ergo not just stranger with love at first sight. Love at first talk does happen, but adds to it.
Her art style is amazing 😭😭 I love it so much
So there's a story I read in a book of dragon stories that's kind of like Beauty and the beast but with more effort on beauty. So the story starts with a prince who was traveling from a diplomatic mission for so long he was thirsty. Suddenly, he comes upon an abandoned castle and when he went to draw from the well he sees a dragon with a pet owl. The dragon tells the prince that he may drink in exchange for his first born daughter. The prince (convinced that may never happened) accepts and drinks to his heart content. Years later, and 2 sons later, a girl is born and the now king remembers his bargain. He tells his wife this and they decided to name the princess "Merlin" and raise her as a boy. She was skilled in all things and is quite the archer, but she wasn't allowed to cut her hair. One day when she's all grown, she let her hair loose while outside and the dragon snatch her up. The dragon tells Merlin she can be free if she can beat a cocky youth who come to the castle every night in 3 contests, one per night. The first was Chess in which Merlin caught him attempting to cheat and won. The second was swords duel which they fought across the castle, the last which Merlin got to pick was archery, which she was able to win by using her cunning to bring the owl down without harming it. Of course the dragon and the youth are the same people and apparently the youth is a prince who got cursed by a fairy or witch aftee bragging that no man can beat him. The curse can only be broken if someone who isn't a man beats him 3 times which Merlin did and of course they fell in love and married.
Well, there is a greek tale called: ''Eros and Psyche'' who has a lot of common elements with this tale, maybe you could cover it? Isn't such an unknown tale tho, I believe many people know it already, but maybe (considering this one is a quite old story) you could show us how the elements of this story may have been used in more modern fairy tales? Just a little something to think about after the witching hour when you are wide awake, lol, goodbye!

There is a fairytale that has Eros and Psyche elements called White-Bear King Valemon or East of the Sun and West of the Moon from Norway. It doesn't seem to be well known but it has the reveal of the 'prince' scene and her having to go save him afterwards for disobeying and getting help along the way.

Heck You Could Make a SERIES of these this dark fairytales, told in their OG, bloody, gruesome, and often times saucy glory. I'd pay good money to see an animated series like that! :3
I gotta say, you're pretty underrated. This whole Tim Burton-esque commentary is a genius variety for these spooky tales. In short: I'm hooked. I want more.
Fun fact: The Vestal Virgins were actually responsible for saving a young Julius Caesar from Sulla' proscription. Before his political and military career began, Julius had been on track to become a priest of Jupiter, and was initially wed to the daughter of Roman Consul Cinna. After Cinna died there was a brief Civil War between Cinna's rival, Sulla, and the faction that had supported Cinna. Sulla won and began undoing all of Cinna's reforms and killing his supporters. He ordered Caesar to divorce Cinna's daughter and abdicate the priesthood, but Caesar refused and went into hiding. But Caesar had been in the care of the Vestal Virgins when he was training for the priesthood. And he made such an "impression" on them, that the entire troupe of Vestal Virgins went to Sulla to appeal on his behalf. Sulla relented and Caesar was allowed to keep his wife and chattels in exchange for giving up the priesthood.
Another story that turns the tropes on their head is a story called Ileana Cosanzeana the smart, in which she tricks a prince who tries to trick, steal her innocencw, and then kill her. But in the end they do have a happily ever after, but it is quite the amusing story. I reccommend you read it, although I am uncertain if it is translated in English or not
Moral of the story: no matter how many magical boons you might have, your dog and cat will always keep you safe. ❤😻🐶
Watching this for the 2nd time... This is seriously my fave fairy tale you've told so far! Rainbow princes, fairy's, a damsel not in distress, suspense, it inspired some aspects of howels moving castle and an interesting plot

Honestly, I can't think of any I'd consider the prince saving the princess other than Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and the wife in Bluebeard (and he's a brutal serial killer, so fair enough) so I don't really get that discussion. Rapunzel and the prince do a bit each. Beauty, Fairer, the girls in 'East of the sun' and Finist, Gerda rescues Kai, Ali Baba's servant girl kills the robbers, and you could argue the little mermaid saves the prince by not killing him
have you heard of the fairy tale "the dog and the sailor"? its rather unusual in a bunch of ways, like one its rare for you to find a fairy tale that takes place mostly at sea.
I loved the references to the older myths and legends. So cool to see it still appreciated even today 🙏

Worth noting, most folklore is told with variations, so you could have child friendly and R-rated version coexisting at the same time. There was the common version of Little Red Riding Hood, but also a very macabre and sexual version with elements of cannibalism. Kind of like there's a porno and/or horror parody of most stories today.
Love hearing fairy tales that are out of the normal. Thank you for the spooky tale.
Honestly, I love and adore the entire story. Would it be possible to see if there are any tales of the Eastern European myths around the Fairy called "Samodiva?"I think it would be fun to cover.
Anytime anyone in fairytales and myths says that their family member is prettier or more talented than (insert mythical being here,) it usually doesn't end well. You would think that people would learn not to do that. Especially in a fairytale or mythical setting! 🤣😂
I'm shocked that nobody has turned this into a movie yet. This has all the makings of an 80s style fantasy movie! 😲

This fairytale is really interesting, and I love how it turns everything we assume about fairytales on its head! I also noticed another reference to mythology in the suspended castle, I can’t remember if he was a god but Lord Aeolus was a powerful being who lived in a castle in the sky. He didn’t often meet with mortals, but whenever he did need to he would chain his castle down to earth, usually in a mountain range. He was the ruler of the four winds which fits with the winds swaying the suspended castle.
I really love these videos and animation ^^
The rainbow talking sounds like a reference to the Greek and Roman gods too. If you gave Iris an offering (like a coin) you could send a message to another person through a rainbow.
Such a good channel! 🙂
I loved this so much!
Another fairytale like this is a personal favorite of mine. The Celtic Tale of Smallhead and the King's Sons. I will now copy the entire story here directly from my book of Celtic Myths and Tales. Do please enjoy. Long ago there lived in Erin a woman who married a man of high degree and had one daughter. Soon after the birth of the daughter the husband died. The woman was not long a widow when she married a second time, and had two daughters. These daughters hated their half-sister, though she was not so wise as another, and nicknamed her Smallhead. When the elder of the two sisters was fourteen years old their father died. The mother was in great grief then, and began to pine away. She used to sit at home in the corner and never left the house. Smallhead was kind to her mother, and her mother was fondest of her eldest daughter than of the other two, who were ashamed of her. At last the two sisters made up their minds to kill their mother. One day, while their half-sister was gone, they put the mother in a pot, boiled her, and threw the bones outside. When Smallhead came home there was no sign of her mother. "Where is my mother?" asked she of the other two. "She went out somewhere. How should we know where she is?" "Oh, wicked girls! you have killed my mother." said Smallhead. Smallhead wouldn't leave the house now at all, and the sisters were very angry. "No man will marry either one of us," said they, "if he sees our fool of a sister." Since they could not drive Smallhead from the house they made up their minds to go away themselves. One fine morning they left home unknown to their half-sister and travelled on many miles. When Smallhead discovered that her sisters gone she hurried after them and never stopped till she came up with the two. They had to go home with her that day, but they scolded her bitterly. The two settled then to kill Smallhead, so one day they took twenty needles and scattered them outside in a pile of straw. "We are going to that hill beyond," said they, "to stay till evening, and if you have not all the needles that are in that straw outside gathered and on the tables before us, we'll have your life." Away they went to the hill. Smallhead sat down, and was crying bitterly when a short grey cat walked in and spoke to her. "Why do you cry and lament so?" asked the cat. "My sisters abuse and beat me," answered Smallhead. "This morning they said they would kill me in the evening unless I had all the needles in the straw outside gathered before them." "Sit down here," said the cat, "and dry your tears." The cat soon found the twenty needles and brought them to Smallhead. "Stop there now," said the cat, "and listen to what I tell you. I am your mother; your sisters killed me and destroyed my body, but don't harm them; do them good, do the best you can for them, save them: obey my words and it will be better for you in the end." The cat went away for herself, and the sisters came home in the evening. The needles were on the table before them. Oh, but they were vexed angry when they saw the twenty needles, and they said some one was helping their sister! One night when Smallhead was in bed and asleep they started away again- Wait wait wait...did you think I was *actually* going to copy this WHOLE thing?! NO! That's crazy talk! But I will summarize...but not now. It's late and my foot is screaming at me cuz it's asleep from me sitting on it. Till the morrow my friends when I update this! 💕

@@PrincessDreamActress Well...since you asked so nicely. (I'm not going to directly copy it because it's very long and wordy, so I'll "shorten" if that makes sense) Smallhead sisters leave her once again. When she finds out they left, she searches for them day after day. Tracking them and asking passerbys for their whereabouts. She finds out one evening that her sisters found lodging with an old hag. A hag who had three daughters and one son (this is important). Now, it was a very bad thing that the sister were staying with this hag for she had more power of witchcraft than any and was known to be very wicked. Smallhead makes her way to the hag's home and asks for lodgings "for God's sake" (not quite sure what that meant during that time but I suppose it was an offer that was not to be refused.) "Oh, then," said the hag, "it is hard to refuse any one lodgings, and besides on such a wild, stormy night. I wonder if you are anything to do with the young ladies who came the way this evening?" Smallhead's sisters were *furious* when they found at their half-sister had found them once again! They said nothing, not wanting to be associated with the likes of her. After supper the hag tells the three strangers to sleep in a room on the right side of the house. When her own daughters were going to bed Smallhead saw her tie a ribbon around the neck of each of them (told you it was important, you can probably guess where this is going!) and heard her say, "Sleep in the left-hand bed." Smallhead hurried and said to her sisters: "Come quickly, or I'll tell the woman who you are." So they moved to the left hand room before the hag's daughters could enter. When they saw this, they decided that the right-hand bed was just as good as any and decided to take their rest. When Smallhead knew the hag's daughters were asleep she she untied the ribbons around their neck and tied them around her sleeping sisters' and her own. She lay awake and waited, listening for the hag. Eventually she heard her say, "Go, now, and kill the three girls; they have the clothes and money." "You have killed enough in your life and so let these go," said the son. But his mother wouldn't listen. Fearing his mother, the boy took a long knife and went to the right-hand room and cut the throats of the three girls without ribbons. Afterwards, the son went to sleep for himself. Some time later when the hag herself was asleep, Smallhead woke her sisters and told them what happened, made them dress quickly and follow her. Believe me, they were willing and glad to follow her this time. (Lol, the book says that last sentence word for word!) The sisters come across a bridge called the "The Bridge of Blood." Any person who killed someone in their life was not able to cross it. Because of Smallhead's sisters' wrongdoing, they were not able to cross. "If I did not know that you killed our mother," said she, "I might know it now, for this is the Bridge of Blood." She carried one sister over the bridge and was halfway across with the second when the hag catches up with them. Having killed a multitude of people in her life, she was most definitely not allowed to cross! "Bad luck to you, Smallhead!" said she, "I did not know that it was you that was in it last evening. You have killed my daughters." The hag, angered, began shouting curses at Smallhead, every one that she could remember! The sisters travelled on until they found a King's castle and heard that two servants were needed. "Go now," said Smallhead to the two sisters, "and ask for service. Be faithful and do well. You can never go back to road you came." The two found employment at the King's castle and Smallhead took lodging in the house of nearby blacksmith. "I should be glad to find a place as a kitchen-maid in the castle," said Smallhead to blacksmith's wife. "I will go to the castle and find a place for you if I can." said the woman. The blacksmith's wife found a place for Smallhead and she went to the castle next day. "I must be careful," thought Smallhead, "and do my best. I am in a strange place, my two sisters are here in the King's castle. Who knows, we may have great fortune yet." She dressed neatly and was quite cheerful. Everyone liked her, they even like her better than her sisters. Though they were just as beautiful. The King had two sons, one at home and the other abroad. Smallhead thought to herself, "It is time for the son who is here in the castle to marry. I will speak to him the first I can." One day she saw him alone in the garden, went up to him, and said: "Why are you not getting married, it is high time for you?" He only laughed and thought she was too bold. Thinking her a simpleminded peasant girl, decided to be pleasant and told her: "I will tell you the reason: My grandfather bound my father by an oath never to let his oldest son marry until he could get the Sword of Light, and I am afraid that I shall be long without marrying." (Continuing in second note)

(now, where were we? Ah yes, Smallhead is about to hook up this woeful prince! 😏) "Do you know where the Sword of Light is or who has it?" asked Smallhead. "I do," said the King's son, "an old hag who has great power and and enchantment, and she lives a long distance from this, beyond the Bridge of Blood. I cannot go there myself, I cannot cross the bridge, for I have killed men in battle. Even if I could cross the bridge I would not go, for many the King's son that hag has destroyed or enchanted." (Remember that) "Suppose some person were to bring the Sword of Light, and that person a woman, would you marry her?" "I would, indeed." said the King's son. "If you promise to marry my elder sister I will strive to bring the Sword of Light." "I will promis most willingly," said the King's son. (Now, I don't know about you. But if my sister got me to get married to a handsome prince I *would not* complain!...I'm realizing how sorta weird that sounds now...ANYWAY!!) Early next morning Smallhead set out on her journey, stopping at the first shop she saw and bought a stone weight of salt and went on her way, never stopping or resting till she reached the hag's abode. She climbed to the gable, looked down, and saw the son making a great pot of stirabout (stew, I believe) for his mother. "I am hungry as a hawk!" Cried she, hurrying him. Whenever the boy looked away she dropped the salt stone bit by bit until it was gone. The impatient hag at last cried out: "Bring the stirabout. I am starving! Bring the pot. I will eat from the pot. Give the milk here as well!" The boy brought the stirabout and milk, the woman began to eat. But at the first taste she spat out and screamed: "You put salt in the pot in place of meal!" "I did not mother." "You did, and it's a mean trick that you played on me. Throw this stirabout to this pig outside and go for water to the well in the field. "I cannot go," said the boy "the night is too dark; I might fall into the well." "You must go and bring the water; I cannot live till morning without eating." "I am as hungry as yourself," said the boy, "but how can I go to the well without a light? I will not go unless you give me a light." "If I give you the Sword of Light there is knowing why may follow you; maybe that devil of a Smallhead is outside." But sooner than fast till morning the old hag gave it to him anyway warning him to take good care of it. When he went out to the well, the boy, seeing no one, left the sword at the steps to have good light. Of course Smallhead snatched it up when he wasn't looking. She ran over hills, dales and valleys towards the Bridge of Blood. The boy shouted and screamed with all his might at the sight of the sword's disappearance. The hag, drawn out by her son's shouts, heard his explanation and off she rushed to the Bridge of Blood, following the light of the sword. "Give me the Sword of Light, or bad luck to you!" Cried the hag, unable to cross the bridge. "Indeed I will not; I will keep it, and back luck to yourself!" (Oh, nice sass Smallhead, I respect it!) On the following morning, she approaches the prince, "I have the Sword of Light; now will you marry my sister?" "I will." Said he. The King's son married Smallhead's sister and got the Sword of Light. A thousand apologies my friend. But it is 16 minutes past midnight and I must take my leave to rest. May your sleep be deep and your dreams be filled with all your fantastical desires!

@@PrincessDreamActress Hello there again. It took a moment to find that book again. We're about halfway through the story now and this is where it gets *really* exciting! After the marriage Smallhead no longer stayed in the kitchen the sister didn't care to have her in kitchen or parlor (not sure why this is her. Perhaps they were showing that Smallhead's sister were being a bit nicer?) Not long after, the King's second son comes home from abroad. He was not long in the castle when Smallhead said to herself, "Maybe he will marry my second sister." She saw him one day in the garden, went toward him; he said something, she answered, then asked: "Is it not time for you to be married like your brother?" "When my grandfather was dying," said the young man, "he bound my father not to let his second son marry till he had the Black Book. This book used to shine and give brighter light than ever the Sword of Light did, and I suppose it does yet. The old hag beyond the Bridge of Blood has the book, and no one dares to go near her, for many is the King's son killed or enchanted by that woman." "Would you marry my second sister if I were to get you the Black Book?" "I would indeed; I would marry any woman if I got the Black Book with her. The Sword of Light and the Black Book were in our family till my grandfather's time, then they were stolen by that cursed old hag." "I will have that book," said Smallhead, "Or die in the trial to get it." Knowing that the stirabout was the main food of the hag, Smallhead settles in her mind to play another trick. Taking a bag she scraped the chimney, gathered about a stone of soot, and took it with her. The night was dark and rainy. When she reached the hag's house, she climbed up the gable to the chimney and found that the son was making stirabout for his mother. She scraped the soot down by degrees till a the whole stone was in the pot. Then she scraped about the chimney until a lump of soot fell into the boy's hand. "Oh mother," said he, "the night is wet and soft, the soot is falling." "Cover the pot," said the hag. "Be quick with the stirabout, I am starving." The boy took the pot to her. "Bad luck to you," cried the hag the moment she tasted the stirabout, "this is full of soot; throw it to the pig." "If I throw it out there is no water inside to make more, and I'll not go into the dark and rain to the well." "You must go!" screamed she. "I'll not stir a foot of this unless I get a light," said the boy. (Continuing in next reply)

Once I saw the castle hanging on a chain, I knew it was the tale Fairerthanafairy.
How did I get here so early? Will you look into Jekyll and Hyde at some point? I know it's not a fairytale or anything but I would love to see you review it or something.
Was anyone else both creeped out, and yet was left curious, by the thumbnail?
5:04 the rain bow might refer to the ancient Greek goddess Iris goddess of the rainbow who you can give a offering to at a rainbow to have her send a message to others.
Princy catfishing rainbow😂 Never thought this words could be uttered and make sense
You should talk about what these fairytale are called in the index like Jon Solo would mention. I'd love to know.
Never occured to me how myrtle bark can easily resemble smooth human skin
So wait a minute. So you’re telling me that the whole villain coming up with an elaborate plan to destroy the hero or heroine and not making sure that it works was a thing before movies were even a thing? You learn something new everyday.😊
This tale certainly has the number three a lot of times
It seems like the fairies got what they wanted all along - Fairer, marrying into the Fairies, become one of them and thus the original slander of their mortal name is rendered null.
Lovely fairy tale ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I'm pretty sure the moral of this story is... don't name your freaking daughter Fairer Thana Fairy!!! That dad deserved not to see his daughter ever again.
Ok, am i the only one who smells a conspiracy here? So the girl is named Fairerthanafairy, she lives her early life without any help from said fairies. Then a bunch of fairies kidnap her, stick her with the cruelest fairy who imprisons her, but she just so happens to share her prison with a prince, and not just any prince, but a fairy prince. Then she escapes, and woo hoo, she just so happens to run into 3 fairies in disguise who offer her much needed help. I mean the fairies were pissed off that this girl was doing perfectly fine without their help, and here she is accepting their help, thereby undoing all that. And by the end she ends up married to a fairy prince, stuck in fairy land where she will never be seen again by any mortal, and let's face it, probably die within what would likely seem like an eyeblink to her fairy prince, since they are either incredibly long lived or outright immortal. Seems the moral of the story is fairies always get their way.
It could be her parents are dead and since she was tooken away at a young age she could be more magical being then human. There have been many stories where fairys and other magical being have swap out there unhealthy baby for health human baby and the baby starts to change in thier realm. Also if a magical being want a child for some reason if they will try to lure them into thier realm and try to keep the child there until the child changes and so much time has gone by in thier realm nobody remember them
4:00 Also, the grey sisters from Greek Mythology(in the tale of Perseus) also only had one eye and one tooth.
12:26 this is a little unrelated, but I just think it’s so cool that green or white is what they’re wearing white is associated with the crown chakra I believe it’s one of the colors the eastern world associates white with the crown chakra the seventh one at the top very top outside of your body and green is associated with the heart chakra. These women were telling her not to give up on her heart desires. They were trying to ensure her that she would make it to the end of what she did promised, the prince, she promised prince that she would challenge death for their love and if they seem challenging death buddy, I don’t know what is I always get a story in my ear that makes me believe more and more in manifestation and karma and everything that it seems like my immediate world is trying to shut down in my life there’s always some thing like one of these little ladies in green, telling her not to give up, this is a story for me. The story is like one of them little ladies in green and white
That's a crazy shroom trip!
Literally Beauty and the Beast's freaky sibling - and I love this one too!
I believe the pomegranate is also derived from Greek mythology
Would you ever do a pans labyrinth video??
Please review Shrek
Very interesting!. - This protagonist seems to inspire a similar jealousy to that of Snow White
This is why I always carry steel into the woods! Because those GOSH DAMN FAIRIES!
This fairytale reminds me, and probably took inspiration from, the tale of Eros and Psyche
I would love to hear your interpretation and thoughts about Stephen Kings "Fairy Tale".
Nice
This sounds sooo familiar, though I don't know where I heard this lol
@17:43 Wow, what a beauty🤯
Fantastic story. I also love it when the princess saves the prince. Granted, I don't mind the prince saving the princess, but it's nice to see both of them saving each other. 🩷👑
12:22 You clearly don't read Greek myth (the sisters who share 1 tooth and eye are the Graeae )
I think I would’ve resorted to slapping before resorting to opening a glass bottle which could hold anything from the most deadliest poison to the elixir of life as far as I know! In my case the gender roles would be reversed back to the default position of course but anyhow I would be extremely reluctant to opening a bottle that could either kill the woman I love or condemn her to continue sleeping but now with eternal life to extend the torment of her endless sleep permanently. Although after a fairy woman pops out of the bottle I can just imagine myself staring at the tiny woman approaching my princess and going “What… the… f***?!”
I remember I used to have a book called Tatterhood, which was full of fairy tales with female protagonists. Unfortunately, I think it's out of print.
More pre Gimm/Aesop Fables fairy tails please?
I liked the story
The fairytale version of Love is Blind 😅
These remind me of Fractured Fairytales from Bullwinkle 😅
This is a story only Don Bluth would adapt into a film.
