It's so important for study vloggers to be honest when they're stressed, tired, and preoccupied with their academic assignments because that's REAL. And more importantly: showing how they're trying to deal with all of that

Don't forget you are still young and just starting out in serious academic research. Of course you are going to get stressed but the more you grow and learn the less stressful it becomes. If you enjoy academia don't give up on it just because it can become stressful-so many things in life are stressful. The more you research and write the easier it becomes. Follow your dreams and don't be too hard on yourself. I remember doing honours (20,000 word thesis) straight after undergrad and feeling like a loser. I worked hard and got a first. I then did my MA (40,000 word thesis) and went through ups and downs - doubted myself but worked hard and ended up winning top thesis prize and second in sole author published article. I am now doing my PhD. You will have ups and downs, you will at times doubt yourself and you will at times get stressed but as long as you are enjoying what you are doing and growing then it is all worth it. I am not naturally talented academically but hard work pays off. You will grow and learn the more you delve into it. If you have a passion for research don't let the times of stress stop you; all professions have their amount of stress.

But do not let that stop you. We develop coping mechanisms and build community with our peers working through our PhD (if you decide to pursue one). There are moments of great joy and it can be really rewarding! And there is no happy place like a library! Congratulations on submitting! This is a great achievement!

I completed two Master's degrees and part of a PhD program before realizing that I did not want to pursue the tenured professor path. There were several reasons for this (including some personal ones), but a lot of it was actually seeing parts of the path/process as a graduate student (the visiting faculty candidates who were interviewing for jobs, the years of work that go into earning tenure or not earning tenure, and also the expectations for service and advancement for tenured faculty) and realizing that although I loved critical reading, research, and writing, there's a lot more to the job than that. I think that to be successful in academia, you definitely have to develop resilience to stress because there will be new and difficult challenges for many years, after you finish the exams and papers.

Congratulations on completing your dissertation! It is such a major accomplishment and I’m sure that you did better than you were feeling at times. Remember that you are/were a student trying to persuade people whose lives are in academics, specifically on your topic. Your dissertation is trying to teach them something. That is what makes it such a difficult task. I had to do hour-long presentations to 2 universitity’s specialized departments as a novice in the field and thinking there is no way I can teach these folks anything. But you will surprise yourself. ❤🎉

Hello, Ruby! So happy for you to have persevered through this important week. It took me back to all the emotions of the last week of my Masters in Counseling and the final submission of my Masters Thesis(what we call it in the US as dissertations are typically for PhD). My eldest daughter, who is just a few years younger than you, and I have been following you for about a year and have really enjoyed your journey. I understand what you mean about contemplating stepping out of academia for a time. You may not feel that way forever, however( as a crisis and trauma counselor) I would recommend after 5 years of schooling that you do step away for at least 6 months to a year to give your body and mind a respite and reset. This will be so very good for your nervous system. You will come back to academia, should you choose to do so, all the stronger for it and it will give the mental space for even more original thought and creativity. You are such a doll and I hope you will continue to post your life and progress. We are cheering you on!

Regarding the question whether it would matter that someone else had done a similar article/dissertation to you earlier, I think it depends on how long it had been out for, and how long your degree goes for. Having done a doctorate which took 6 years, there was an expectation that even once you had compiled all your literature for the project, you still needed to keep checking if there was anything new that coincided with your project. If I had handed in my dissertation and there was an article or dissertation similar to mine that had come out years prior, it would look like I was not a very good researcher. However, it also depends on how in touch the examiners are with contemporary research on your topic. If they don't know about it, it won't impact your results. All the best for your results and future academic work.

I'm now out of academia after 6 years of studying but your content makes me miss it so much!! Also small side note not to take away from this amazing video (even filming the last days of your diss is so inspirational as I spent most of mine in my room stressed and glued to my laptop) but Mary Queen of Scots was Queen Elizabeth I's cousin - not her sister! You probably knew that and it was just a small mix up but it's important to us Scots! (Elizabeth did also have an older sister called Mary who was Queen in England after their father's death). Very interesting to learn about her embroidery - I know she was also a fan of golf!

Remember to enjoy these moments. Remember all you taught us about not seeking perfection and validation in school. We are too old now to be so stressed about being 'perfect' :) I think Oxford is a place where the super-high level of all intellectual work puts an immense pressure on people to go way beyond their optimal area of development. This can be good if one was lazy before, but it can be bad for people who were already hard workers but are way too sensitive to feedback...Keep your inner beauty alive and enjoy everything that happens, including the emotions of stress :) We love you and keep you in our prayers.

Hello Ruby, I felt it when you were talking about finding a paper that says the same thing as yours one day before the due date (i've sumbitted my Master's degree thesis recently). If there is no diffference in the results at all, there is still a high chance that the research method of your paper is different, so I would refer to it in the litterature review as a one of the existing research on this topic and would say that the aim of my paper is to confirm these results from another point of view 😊

15:14 you could review their sources and that would give you a very good idea how much their work differs from yours (this almost happened to me once when researching Paxton's Crystal Palace 😂), you could also use it as a source and point out how your research contends, updates or complements that previous work, there's nothing wrong with that in academia. I feel we're always pushed to do "new innovative research" but we also need research that takes from previous work and updates it. Also one shouldn't have that problem if you were thorough in the state-of-the-art phase (unless the publication is very recent, that would be very bad luck)

I guess the confidence of hard-working people comes from understanding that even if they are imperfect, it is still ok. It is still worth it. Everything in academia is just a game that is meant to develop your skills, not just intellectual skills, but also self-acceptance skills (own imperfection-acceptance skills).

I can relate to your situation. I've gone through this stage twice - undergraduate and postgraduate. My dissertation was more of proof of concept projects as I studied design and I had to document everything and write detailed explanations to my creative pieces and process. I'm good with making stuff but clumsy with documentation😅. Also I going to be pursuing my master's abroad in design again this year so my foreign uni dissertation will be the final episode/climax in my design education. Right now I have sufficient time to brainstorm relevant opportunities so that I'll be prepared rather panic.

I am currently doing my dissertation for masters too and it is very overwhelming. I help myself by asking myself at intervals, 'what is the worst thing that can happen if I fail?' In reality, while I would be gutted but ultimately it wouldn't negate the experience and learning I have undergone. I would still be able to do a PHD, still get a job in the area. It wouldn't be the end of the world. I tend to catastrophise things lol.

I was working on my master’s thesis during Covid and I really struggled to find source material because there was a language barrier with the primary sources. My partner found a promising title so when the libraries opened again I went to check it out. It was a PhD project. On „my“ thesis. The exact same thing, reasearch question, everything. After a good panic attack and a public crying right there in the library I emailed my supervisor who promptly ghosted me! A lot more chaos went down, a change of supervisors and a completely new research, but in the end I never did the master thesis in the end.

Hi Ruby. I wanted you to know that your voice is soothing and calming especially when I am anxious in doing my thesis. It has helped me to go through my works. Postgraduate is indeed a lonely journey especially when one is taking a fully research track. Also, I wonder how do you manage your time between creative writing, reading and your academics?

Susanna Clarke has a really strange and lovely story about Mary, Queen of Scots in her short story collection "The Ladies of Grace Adieu." She takes the historical facts about Mary's imprisonment and love of embroidery and weaves in a lot of dry humour and surreal enchantments. It's one of my favourite stories in the collection.
