THE WEDGE - BIGGEST WAVES in YEARS | July 4th 2020 | Raw footage
Спорт
The forecast for the 4th was listed to be the biggest day in a few years. Next thing you know they announce they are closing down the beach in all of Orange County and LA. Had to risk it and go check it out. Being the first on on the sand i noticed the gates were open and it was go time.
Surfers include: Jamie O'Brien, Tyler Thornsley, Blair Conklin, Brad Domke, Sage Burke, Dawson Tylers, Dylan ZaZueta, Bobby Okvist and a lot more
Bodyboarders include: Tanner McDaniel, Craig Whetter, Cory Bolter, Chad Barba an a lot more.

Seeing Jamie O'Brien put in context with all those other hellmen really puts his surfing into perspective. He's another level. respect to anyone that goes out in that.

I’ve lived by the beach in Southern California all my life and I’m still terrified of the power of the ocean. Impressed, amazed, mesmerized, and terrified by it. I’ll stick to snowboarding and let you maniacs have the waves.

@Barry in the us last year only 39 people died snowboarding total. 76 surfers died from drowning alone according to the national weather service. I’ll agree you’re more likely to get injured snowboarding.

I made it to cylinders and got out there. I was exhausted. waves wouldn't stop coming. a few of my friends went and a handful of chicks..never again. freakin news crews were there because the waves were huge
Crazy stuff, mad respect for everyone sending it that day. And say what you will about JOB, but he's killing it out there, squeezing into those barrels like he's surfing backdoor pipeline. Also, let's take a brief minute to admire Blair's versatility as a waterman. Love the guy. Would've loved to watch this spectacle from the beach!

I think the Wedge is more of an equaliser here. He got a few pits but, at pipe he'd be dominating. At the wedger he's just another guy eating shit 90% of the time

I hear you guys talking about Ocean Beach in San Francisco. Im from Dana Point, so I grew up surfing in south county back in the 80s. I went to school in San Francisco, so one day in 1989, I decide to go surf a swell at Ocean Beach....I paddle out by myself, get pounded in the impact zone trying to paddle out by four 10 to 12 footers, and I mustve been 30 feet down easy by the pressure I felt on my ears. Somehow, I held my breath for what seemed like minutes, and made it to the surface. I almost didnt make it that day, and I was the only one out so nobody wouldve known. Ocean Beach is a gnarly break....and NEVER surf alone.
At gunpoint: "How do you wish to die?" "Dude just send me out at The Wedge with a surfboard."
I wish I drove to the Wedge at 5:00 Am to watch J.O.B. surf, that would've made my day

I stopped surfing the wedge many years ago...definitely a spot for young people. Not for the faint of heart.
The Wedge is and always will be the BOMB!!!!! Thank you for posting this Mr. Man!
Aww I so appreciated the raw footage and sounds of waves. Thank you for sharing it.
Blair's wave @ 27:53-28:09 KILLING it!
I saw snippets here and there of the sets and I knew it was biggest swell to hit in awhile. Sick clips, sorry you got stuck out there when it flooded.
I absolutely love the opening clip, Craig Whetter big air to landing on Jamie O’Brien. It looked like he got tangled in Jamie’s board too. I hope Jamie dived hard enough, that looked full gnarly man😵
I grew up in Newport. I've seen every bomb of a swell go off since 1993 and only one time in I think '98 or '99 have I seen consistent sets this huge. Weirdly, I got way way way better at snowboarding in 5 seasons than surfing in 15. I'm also petrified of sharks so the fear is distracting. I got hit by a tiger shark in Oahu when i was 19 and it kinda fucked my relationship with big blue up a bit. Great video.
Thanks for not dubbing in cheesy music! Pretty freaking big out there! Epic video
Have really enjoyed looking at your superb video - full of action from beginning to end with amazing wave shots and terrific poundings ! I like the strong sunlight sparkling on the wave fronts with all the foam suds and boiling surf - interesting to see the beach life alongside all the waves !
41:32-41:45 Best and biggest Wedge wave EVER ridden!!!

Great video men,, insane waves!
When I was just a kid in the 60s it was all bodysurfers, all day. We had a place up the peninsula about a quarter mile and learned to bodysurf in some really wicked shore break. The old guys at the wedge took many of us under their wing. Those guys were really watermen and skilled in anything ocean related. I live in Hawaii now but I really miss this place.

Me, too. I body surfed the wedge in the 60's. I remember how the face of the wave would wall up like an elevator at the shore and you'd be looking down at sand when you dropped in for the ride. Those Wedge waves would just beat you up so bad -- but that's what the fun was.

You'd drop down the wave face looking like you were going to hit the bare sand but then the wave would pop some water out like a cushion at the last minute. You had to be able to hold your breath while getting pounded by the wave closing out. I live in southwest Florida now-a-days and there are just the tiniest waves unless a storm hits.
Really good footage of surfers and bodyboarders chargin! 🤙🤙🤙🤙

Great footage, watched the whole thing.
12:30 boogie ride successful. Nice. Ditto that at 14:55 nice barrel.
Dude that guy at 9:03 air reversing into SPACE! Craig what?
mad respect for the fisherman lol
I was watching these waves on Surfline when they were going on lol
Belly flop at 30:36, gets wrecked then American board goes shooting out. Perfect for the 4th.
The dismount of this wave is absolutely worth a look. It was Tyler I think the video master said. He took 10 of air on a relaxed front full flip off a board. Vid time 9:33 AND @-32:50 for a more relaxed exit!
So JOB has massive wedge backhand barrels dialled in after like 5 waves as if it's 4 foot pipe. Legend.
I liked that you showed the moon upside down in the beginning. Every time I see it like that I post it. It’s really mind boggling to wonder if the moon is turned or the earth. Great shot!

The second wave's super floater I literally see as the ultimate potential finishing move for giant wedge stand up surfing. Where else can you go besides close out tube, mediocre mid wave carve, or pull out, you know? So, sick stuff, Jamie. If only you tried sticking the landing. Hopefully more surfers follow your lead..

The wedge is the perfect bodyboard spot. The waves aren't too long, they have a high peak to get the speed and aren't too steep on most days. You get a good drop with maybe a barrel and a sick air

I noticed the full moon last night. It was eerie, just above LAX airport right at dusk. Sky was blue. Moon was orange. (it turns white after it rises up.) Surf charts showed major south swell. Weather all day was clear skies, windy and kinda hot and dry. Freaky signs. I knew it was big. Happy July 4.

The wedge needs to have a lot of South in it in order to be magic. The more west the harder it is to get those magic, glorious rides, and the more dangerous it gets because it wants to push you into the jetty, if you wipe out near the corner, and down the line, it wants to close down the cylinder section on you as you are coming out of the main bowl. If it's south-south-east, that's when you see guys get the long shots from the corner, all the way through cylinders, which is rare but epic when it happens.
Who reckons all the pros should have a comp here
bruh how long did you film, patience and commitment
nice to see JOB out there, together with Ben Gravy's stuntman.
During a giant south swell in 1977 a Vietnemese Fishermen was fishing off the end of the Corona del Mar jetty when a giant set came and washed him off never to be seen again.
