The wedding of Jacqueline & John F. Kennedy - September 12, 1953

Jacqueline Lee Bouvier and John F. Kennedy were married on the morning of September 12, 1953, in the picturesque St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Newport, Rhode Island.
On the morning of September 12, 1953, more than 750 guests filled St. Mary's Church to watch as John Kennedy and Jacqueline Bouvier exchanged wedding vows in a ceremony presided over by Archbishop Richard Cushing. For the occasion, the church had been decorated with pink gladioli and white chrysanthemums. Boston tenor Luigi Vena sang "Ave Maria."
Following the 40-minute ceremony at which a papal blessing was read, the new couple emerged into a throng of 3,000 well-wishers as they made their way by motorcycle escort to Hammersmith Farm, the Auchincloss estate overlooking Naragansett Bay.
After two hours of greeting family and friends in a receiving line, the bridal couple joined the 1,200 invited guests for champagne and dancing to the music of Meyer Davis and his orchestra. For the first dance, the Kennedy's chose "I Married an Angel."
The couple cut a five-tier wedding cake, and then a luncheon of fruit cup, creamed chicken, and ice cream sculpted to resemble roses was served.

I was just reading an early 11-25-63 news account of JFK's funeral, in it it said Luigi Vena a Boston tenor, sang Ave Maria at the church. I was only 7 at the time JFK was assassinated and was glued to the tv for the entire nonstop, 4 day tv coverage - I remember parts of it, but I don't recall him singing Ave Maria. And though I like opera, before reading this old newspaper today account, I had never heard of Luigi Vena, so I decided to google him to see a photo of him and learn more. A link to this video came up as the first hit! So, I see he also sang Ave Maria for their wedding in'53! In watching this video I was stunned to hear his voice, because I could swear it sounds just like the great Pavarotti!! I closed my eyes and it still sounds like Pavarotti! Now I must know more about Luigi Vena and hear more recordings of his singing! Jack & Jackie had great taste - what an extraordinary voice he had!

As stated above on this day in 1953 {September 12th} tenor Luigi Vena sang "Ave Maria" at the wedding of U.S. Senator John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Lee Bouvier... And a little over ten years later he performed the song again, this time at the funeral of President John F. Kennedy...

I belonged to St.Mary's Church from 1959 to1965.I had the distinction of being the only boy to serve Mass and sing in the choir.I remember sheepishly waving to President Kennedy from the choir loft during the summer of 1962.He and Jackie stayed at her family estate, the Hammersmith Farm in Newport several times as president.

As far as Jack Kennedy the man is concerned, I dont have issues with our leaders and their infidelities, as thats not my concern. He was not soft on the USSR, he just approached the subject with a little more thought. If not for the russian built berlin wall the mindset of Nuclear war in todays age may be a little different right now. Other american politicians at the time wanted to press the button, those with financial interest in the Millitary industrial complex.

Kennedy Snr was the main financer behind Jacks campaign. That much is definately clear but whats the big deal with that? In todays world of politics within the US a lot of big companies fund candidates. Whats the difference, they all still provide the candidate with their own vested interests. JFKs father was an isolationist who represented America in London who vetoed support for american invervention in WW2. JFK openly dismissed his own fathers views on this as his fathers and not his.

Did JFK really think he married an angel? What’s the matter w/ people that the can never be satisfied? That he always wanted to be w/ other women, and have that be okay.. I think JFK came from a louse if a father, and that’s all the example he had. If he married an angel, he should have treasured her. I just don’t understand!

JFK's dad had the mindset that was common in upper class society at the turn of the century, that it was fine for aristocratic men to sleep with lower class women provided they were discreet about it, and their wives were expected to turn a blind eye. He passed that attitude onto his son. Of course, it was no longer as acceptable by the 1950's, and Jackie was understandably upset about his philandering.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt, also a democrat, was a far better president as Kennedy. His wife Eleanor Roosevelt was a far better first lady as Jacqueline. Some declare Kennedy a saint because of his sad assasination. He was not a saint (neither was Roosevelt off course). Kennedy more or less started the Vietnam mess (which was made even worse by his succesor Johnson). What about Washington, Lincoln, Wilson, Teddy Roosevelt?

You can tell they were in love by the way jack didn't fool around with a hooker on his wedding. He actaully waited a couple of weeks before consorting with people of loose values and postitutes. He probably gave her clamidia or something. Sheesh, what a sham. The result of poor upbringing on the kennedy side. Just because you have money doesn't mean you have class.
