The best sound of the 80's awesome....

I scored this album on original vinyl a few years back & put it at the back of my collection never played. Picked it up last week, played it and immediately gave myself an uppercut. Where have I been for the last 40 years. One of the best bands I've ever heard. I'm now in an immediate search for everything Waterboys. It's now at the front of my collection 2000+ albums.

I grew up listening to them.My brother bought me the first 2 albums and I bought this when it first came out.I was 15. Magical. Though I do think this album was a bit trebly.Haha

this is, in my opinion, one of the best group in the 80 years.I'm listening to them since then ,and i'm thinking they're are more expressive and they are care much more then ever.Love them music and Mike with his philosophy,this music is timeless,will love them till the end

easily one of the best albums from the 80's and still stands up

1. Don't Bang the Drum, 2. The Whole Of The Moon, 3. Spirit, 4. The Pan Within, 5. Medicine Bow, 6. Old England, 7. Be My Enemy, 8. Trumpets, 9. This Is The Sea "This is the Sea" has lifted me up and motivated me so many times! And The Whole Of The Moon reminds me that I want to know the Whole Of The moon, so don't give up - keep seeking. But I love this band because there's something for everyone.

My first girlfriend in college put this song on a mixed tape for me and I always took it as a great compliment even though there is the too far too soon thing (definitely true)...she was saying I saw the Big Picture naturally, without having to try....this song always gets me....and Medicine Bow...and This Is The Sea...the whole friggin' album. Masterpiece. Better than Room To Roam I'd say.

I never really liked this song when it came out, well I say never liked, more take it or leave it if playing on radio. But it's only recently iv noticed the lyrics and how good it is. Great song all round.

@Imix Muan Agree 100%. A Pagan Place is not as polished as This is the Sea but it's right up there with it in terms of excellence. After This is the Sea, Mike's celtic journey simply reduced the quality of the music they made; although they did come up with the odd very good song now and again.

I didn't know them in the '80's. I "discovered" them working in a music store in 2002 (roughly) when Mandy Moore covered "Whole of the Moon." She did ok with her version so I looked up the original and special ordered the "Whole of the Moon" compilation greatest hits by Mike Scott and the Waterboys and it is loaded with great songs! I think I like 4 or 5 other songs even more than "Whole of the Moon. I love it when that happens. Thanks Mandy!🤪

Old England is mine! Crazy dynamics, music tells the pain without lyrics! Fantastic, sparks!!!LOVE IT!

Ask anyone who loves music and has been around for at least a few decades for a 'best albums list' and you'll get the inevitable Rumours, Dark Side Of The Moon, Ten, Revolver or Sgt. Peppers, Back In Black et all. Music can't be captured in terms of "best" ofcourse. For a large portion it's down to personal taste, sometimes personal memories. Having said that: for me this Waterboys album would make my top ten of 'favourite albums' every single day. And has done so ever since it was released back in 1985.

The album had seven engineers and five assistant engineers, because it was recorded in eleven different studios between March and July 1985, which makes it even more astounding that the overall sound is so consistent. Produced by Mike Scott and Mick Glossop, if you're interested.

Comprai questo LP a 16 anni nel 1985, quando uscì, e ne rimasi subito impressionato. "Old England" magnifica nel testo e nella musica, ma sono tutte di altissimo livello, anche il gioiellino "Spirit" che dura meno di due minuti. Scott e compagni erano in stato di grazia.

I must've listened , heard, or watched this one track a million times. Every Time I Sang The Lyric...I KNEW THEN HOW RAW IT MEANT NOW

@@joeadams1225 yeah, my mom and dad saw them, my mom is a superfan and saw plenty of their fantastic shows but they walked out on their show a few years ago. Said it lacked all the energy and it was just bad... I really hope they get it together again because I would love to see them.

This music is no joke it is frightening how.good this record really is. at the time when this record was released this band wasn't particularly the most popular band in rock n roll. The record didn't sell all that much in 1985 or 86 I recognize that it is the finest of it's kind. Duly noted in the immortal words of Bob Seger rock n roll doesn't forget. It was one in a hundred million that I got a hold of this record exactly right around the time it came out. I saw the last minute of the official video for whole Of the moon on European MTV and I got excited. I remember clearly thinking that the guy singing was the writer. Im not sure that MTV ever played the video for whole of the moon at all. When I got back to New York I picked it up at tower records on cassette. This is the sea did what every great rock record should do. change your life I listened to it 100s of times all the way back in the day. I was there at the Beacon 2 years in a row 89 and 90 to see the waterboys both times in the first few rows. Waited. In the freezing cold for hours to meet Mike and tellem that he's the best ! Still terribly underrated by the rock hierchy the band soldiers on. All these years later from when the record was released dead center in the mid 80s .

I have given instructions to have this played on a very powerful speaker system at my funeral.

mke scott encapsulated my turbulent 20s so well in Red Army Blues... a real classic

Going back into my childhood Spent At Nazareth House Children's Home Crosby. Sister Anita O' Sullivan Originally From Dublin. Sister Anita Passed While I Was On The Glasgow Royal 2005. When I Woke Up Seven Weeks Later, I Would Always Spend Most Of My Days Sat In The Hospital Chapel. Sister Anita's Body Rests At The Scotland Nazareth House Children's Home. Grounds..Very Specific ?
