The Wanderlust of
Фильм және анимация
In 2011, Foster Huntington created the #vanlife Instagram hashtag, and unexpectedly spawned hundreds of thousands of posts and a family of eager followers. It became a community of like-minded individuals who delight in the kind of adventure you can only get by traveling through the wilderness in a clunky, decades-old vehicle. In this documentary, we follow a group of #vanlife enthusiasts to uncover what the lifestyle means to them.

The biggest thing to remember is you don't need a van to experience a van lifestyle. Going car camping and enjoying time with others is something you can do in any vehicle. You don't have to get caught up in the nostalgia to live the lifestyle

Wouldn't that be uncomfortable? Considering it's a smaller? And less space? And what do you meen nostalgia? Van life is about being on the road full time..finding yourself and true happiness..what's the point of going camping for a while when your going to be back at it Monday morning?

barcasimple thats what van life is for some of them. They don't live in their vans full time they still have to go back to work on monday but they spend their weekends going road tripping surrounded by people they love. All I'm saying is you don't need to think you have to have a van to be able to achieve that

People do not have a choice. To survive they live in vans.Live the Okies in the great depression .Putting lip stick on a van is like putting lip stick on a pig.Poop in a box, sleep on the side of the road.China has your job.Bank took your home.

I can't understand that..how can anyone take mini vacations creating fantasy of allusions thinking there happy..but when in reality..they have to get back to work..That's not finding happiness..that's trying to escape a reality of you being a slave everyday for the rest of your life..all I'm saying is If you have no responsibilities then live free ass much. As you can..and actually live and be happy..

I really enjoyed this video, fun and inspiring! Thanks for sharing :)
The atlantic really stepped up there game with this video. Really enjoyed it. Thanks!
I have 3young kids....needed to hear that. Chasing the dollar when instead I wanna chase them.thank you
Getting out there in Nature anyway you can makes the wonderment of Life so Magical & Priceless! Great Video!
Thanks for sharing your excellent video. I've had many vans over the years and always enjoyed converting them myself. I haven't been a full timer but, every van video that I watch keeps getting me closer to making that jump.
This was wonderful! Gave a realistic look at life on the road. With everything that could go wrong though I still think it's a wonderful option. I am in the selling-all-my-stuff stage and waiting impatiently to get out there! In the meantime I am watching, reading everything I can on that life. Thanks!
Very cool video, I bought a VW Eurovan Camper last year and I love it. I have been traveling to several places here in California and I'm loving the freedom of going anywhere I want and having everything you need in a compact space and not having to spend a dime on hotels. I constantly have people come up to me to ask me questions about my van and if I would want to sell it. Two weeks ago I was in Santa Barbara for three nights and the hotel rooms were $200 per night, it's so nice to park anywhere and have a great night sleep in the van. I recommend to everyone out there to give the van life a chance, it's so much fun and and you feel a sense of freedom which is incredible.
i am 14 and for the past 2 years all i want to do is vanlife. but so addicting watching these video and seeing the good and the bad side of vanlife. and hopefully by the time i turn 18 i will be ready for a vanagon and ready to live in the van. LOVED THE VIDEO!!
Nice production. Thanks for sharing. Before owning a van I also enjoyed vanlife, camping in my Tercel or Civic and before that our family enjoyed vanlife in a popup trailer with some canoes. I think the point is to detach, get away, meet some new people and shrug off the stresses of life for a few days. We work to live, not the other way around.
Incredible. Almost brought tears to my eyes
I dont have a van or ever had a van..hell I use to think vans were sooo boring and without personality but as I get older I find myself drawn to vanlife. I dont know what it is but I want a van hahaha I really enjoyed this video.

Dimes can lead to dollars, if u R the motivated type to work/save/solve problems. the entrepreneur or Mcguyver type mayB? but def non-panic indv. at, problem/ detour/chg plans. whatever opptnty u can do, to make cash along the way. gas an tires take dollars. -Tho many summer adventures got by, maybe thru help/ miracles? IDK. ppl have done it, in diff ways. IMHO, most the successful longer-term ppl, seem resiliant, start small build up, ask 4help/ share back, Had Done ok B4, head out w/ bankcard and emerg cash acct, while learning/figuring how to. A slick latemodel trick/off trail/gizmo ADV rigs def are mega bucks, how ever that came to be. could try some weeklong adventures from home base, in a basic lowcost vehicle, can then B sold on, if its not ur idea of satisfying life situation. be safe, be informed, study avail info, peace all.

awesome video of good times, great vehicles and beautiful family! Thanks for sharing the inspiration :)
this is the second video ive seen that explores both good and bad of van life. looks like fun meeting up with people in the woods with a van though
omg these are the guys that built the awesome treehouse with the skate bowl
Awesome video, I’ve been doing the van thing 8 months, life is awesome. Peace.
Well done! We do enjoy cruising around in our Sprinter, but these VWs are super cool.
NICE! I love meeting other westy owners on the road and sharing stories. I know what your mean about breakdowns it is always in the back of your mind. I have updated and upgraded everything (almost) on my 87 and I still get a gremlin or two every so often but I will never give up my van. ENJOY
I just recently got a 5th wheel with the idea of traveling. I have no real plan other than to see where I end up. I will be pleased if my experience turns out anything similar to what your describing.
That was truly inspiring man! I'm just home from buying my first van, the trip home was pretty rough. We didn't see it when we were inspecting it but when you indicate left the head lights dims down to almost completely off, no other faults have risen their ugly head yet thankfully so we'll keep on vanning for now #vanlife ;)
This is such a great video. Well done. I am slowly transitioning to F/T van life this year. Cant wait for the roller coaster to begin.
Love those Vanagons and Community!
This reminds me of the road trip FunForLouis took!
Awesome video! Been camping & traveling my entire life and I absolutely agree about the next generation being better if their folks raised them traveling & being outdoors...
make more of these please its my get away from my hell whole world living in the suburbs
you guys are so deep brah... just living life man that's what it's all about. this is all sarcasm by the by
These guys remind me of Christopher mccandless from the book into the wild...love em
what an awesome piece of good mood😊
I dnt plan on living out of my truck but I'm building it for travel, like the idea of just bein able to pack and go, not having to find a place to sleep. I'm building a 90 bronco, older truck that I don't mind beating up, it's a older ford so plenty of aftermarket parts, 4x4 to help me get to harder areas so I'm happy with my Lil build so far

Awesome uplifting video! ''All you need is time.'' I just had to comment, I literally comment twice a year on a video. I've done the sailboat thing, think the van life is calling my name.
Sweet. Pretty sure it was this video that ultimately inspired us to get out and pick up the Troopy. Can't thank you enough for that.
This was epic! This guy got life figured out
Wow, that was pretty awesome. Great values.
Excellent Totally agree, love from the uk.
Very cool video. Thanks for sharing.
This guy is a good dad damn
Amazing & inspiring at the same time !
Just AWESOME!!! Video👌🏼
Saving up for my Van now. Just give me the cheapest van to pull the back seats out and put a bed back there and I am set! My job allows me to work 4days on and 4days off. Can't wait to use that time to save up and explore the roads around me :)
How can you not hear this message? I do loud and clear, blessings to #vanlife :)
Spot On Mate, Way Too Go.
Cannot wait to get my 1980 Westy up and going. Doing a air-cooled to diesel conversion. Have the engine and van but in need of the mounting system and that is being acquired next week. Have totally gone through the van by removing all interior and cleaned and repaired to a not showroom condition as Im going to use the van not show it. I hope to see many of the people in the vanagon world on the road. Gregg
Awesome perspective and well made vid.
Motivation 100 percent!
this was the video i was looking for
You guys are heroes!
in can relate to thuis guys sooo.. much! niet wasnt aware it was that much going on in north America
Van life is the best. Lighting recommendations? People say Lumiy Lightline 1250 LED desk lamp because its big on light, low wattage, and compact.
I think everyone loves the design of the Vanagon. Only if it was more reliable.
Great vid, loved it
I totally get this. I was raised with VW's so understand the working on them. What I resent here a little bit is the #vanlife hashtag being all about VW vans. I am very partial to my chevy diesel. Sure I miss the breaking down all the time but hey I can fake that part. Love to hang out with you guys sometime. :)

ALL I CAN SAY ITS WOW! I RUN TOURS AN SAFARIS IN AFRICA DURING SUMMERTIME AND HERE IN CALIFORNIA I HAVE MY 1990 WESTY THAT I SOMETIMES USE FOR FAMILY CAMPING . I WOULD LOVE TO GET IN TOUCH WITH YU GUYS MAY BE WE CAN DO A GREAT TRIP
Great Job to all of you.... One question if I may for all of you.... Why the Vanegan if all the issues?
Driving a vehicle that might break down, is a huuuge fear of mine.
"You don't need six figures, you just need time." Yep.
need that book you were looking threw Please give info on the book love the video i was in my van at walmart watching lol
very cool!!!!
I think the saying is 10,000 hours, not 10,000 times. And you've probably reached that benchmark!
good stuff!
Nicely done video. Glad you shared the reality of a Vanogan. I wouldn't own one. The Tacoma with pop to is way better. I want to skate that bowl and would like to communicate with the owner.
Get a Volvo 245, turn the back into a large bed, mount a tv in the roof and you're set =)
4:13 Woaqin Phoenix digs the vanagon life
If anyone is wondering about showers, go to a truck stop. love's petro, flying j, pilot. most the drivers get unlimited showers. I drove a semi for 3 years and i had a lot of people ask me if i had a spare shower credit. i alway gave them.
Van Hipsters...that's a new one. If there were a hipster I would be it would be this kind.
i love it
excellent
one day Ill go on a trip with you gusy :)
I would definitely look into the Subaru 2.5 boxer engine swap. Subaru's engines are some of the most reliable in the world, definitely the most reliable among consumer cars. Seems like the omly real problem with these vans is the bad engine they put in them. The 2.5 will give you 170 hp over the vw engines 65 hp. You'd get better mpg too. Definitely a good trade off
hy i had your rv at the nederland europa in 1980 and now bigger hymer from 8 meter at spain
Awesome video :-)
THANK YOU. SIR! Reg died but Whylie will live on
The thing is this looks like great fun and I'm sure it is. But most people value security over adventure. Most people want to live this way but simply can not without extreme sacrifice. Most people are not willing to give up a sure thing for something that could leave them broke and homeless. People want security with the illusion of adventure and that is where instagram and this video comes in. People can watch and follow from the safety of their home.
That house!
One of my greatest regrets is selling my 1984 Syncro Van. I'll never be able to afford another one now. I make up for it with a couple endure motorcycles and living on a sailboat with my girlfriend. We'd love to join in on your van camps...If motorcycles are welcome.
"You don't need six figures; you just need time."
how do people make it work with dogs in the car during summer? Or are they traveling in pairs and one person is always staying behind in the car when they stop somewhere???
Suggestions for good careers to survive living in the van full-time while traveling cross country and still maintaining a stable income by myself? I'm 20 with a westy and can't stand my full time job as a restaurant manager...

It's 20+ year old vans that are bound to have issues at times. It's not a VW specific thing. It's an old car thing. If you buy a new VW it's way more reliable just like all the other brands out there. VW is actually known for being very reliable and good build quality. If you buy an old well used Land Rover, Jeep, Mercedes or whatever you will also have to do work on them from time to time. It's just part of owning an old vehicle and taking it through some hard stuff.
@David-hu3zw

funny, yes 30 year old engines that have sat for the last ten years break. Its kind of lack of information thing. the majority buy an older van the previous owner grew tired of it. The van sat for 10 years before they could finally sell it. the new owner starts driving it to death without doing 30 years of neglected maintenance. A lot of people now are doing engine swaps, This has changed the game entirely you have double the horse power or more, reliable modern engine. the Van drives the way it should have from the start. your chevy Van or ford when its 30 years old with 300,000 miles is going to break. Vw's hold their Value. I don't know why but I love driving mine .. it literally makes me feel good. If I am bored or whatever I go some place and do a short trip in my VW I enjoy driving it that much. it looks cool has a good stereo, If I bump into someone I know I can make a coffee on the spot and have a conversation. Every trip I have made in my VW I have met really cool people in a VW doing trips that make me say I want to do that. year long of more cross country trips, some on shoe string budgets some with money. in the end its up to you, for me its more about the travel then the vehicle but I do enjoy my VW.
They should have interviewed a 35-year-old divorced motivational speaker for this.
Moral of the story: It's cool to live IN A VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER!

you dont need 6 figures, you just need time. well said
This looks all so nice, romantic and blah blah. I lived for 2 Years in my VW Bus - becasue I could not rent an apartment from my small wage: This is all fun and games until winter, when blankets ect. wont get dry again - and you freeze tight at the wall of your VW Bus. And you come deep frozen to work for months. And promoting doing that with children: Its not healty for an adult - in winter with no or only a small heating it can kill them. I still live for some weeks in my bus - but T3 Sycro parts are expensive as hell - where do they get the money from? WHERE? They dont seem to work ...

Well if You live in a van and work remotely then you can spend winter in a place where, well... there's no winter at all, isn't in briliant?
This is dope. But how do they pay for food, gas, and parts?
Wonder if the kids are home-schooled then? I would love to have my kids grow up like that and being able to spend that much time with them, really no idea where the money comes from though.
You guys are beautiful god bless, I'm hoping to buy a van to travel with my French bulldog I'm a barber i could cut anywhere
People that dont have kids have no problem living a van life.. but you have small children they will need to be in school.. how do you deal with child social service doctor visits etc.?
VWs-we gave up...too hard on the soul-lol the O2 sensor, or MAF!!!! Ugh lol

start shopping on Craigslist, buy a VW, pour tons of time and some cash into it. You can get help on Facebook VOG or The Samba. there are ways to live some people do seasonal work, others work for awhile then take off for a year or two. Some work from their Van they have some skill usually computer stuff that makes it possible for them to work remotely. I would suggest to not quit your job until you have the Van you want built.
I prefer bus life because there’s jut around double the space of a van
