Your room is SO much nicer than when you moved in. It didn't look like a home. It looked like making do until the real home was ready. Now it looks welcoming. Your worktop looks fantastic.

Hi Diana! Thank so much! LOL. I could only imagine at the time of filming what it must sound like for someone wearing headphones. 😬 My videos I hope are pretty evenly matched on sound decibels and then out of the blue…WHAM! The sharp clanging of two hollow metal bowls smacking one’s eardrums without warning. ⚠️ 🤪 Tell Greta and the rest of the crew that Kenai says “Woof!” 😉❤️

Dear Alone & Kenai, A few months ago I stumbled onto you YT Channel. I began watching 2-3 videos a night from the beginning episode. It is such an adventure to watch; from gardening to building and even grocery shopping....I'm in awh! I had the pleasure of visiting Alaska by train almost 10 years ago. If I were in my early years I would move in a heartbeat. There are a few things I enjoy like quilting, sewing, raised gardening and canning. Your kitchen counter is stunning and love the choice of soapstone. Keep those videos rolling...I'll just live my Alaskan adventure through Kenai & You. Happy Homesteading!

When I installed my hickory butcher block countertops, I ended up applying a light oak stain, and decided on maintaining them with oil, I have used all types of oil, tongue oil, Vaseline, and settled on regular olive oil and over 7 years my countertops still look gorgeous, I wipe them down weekly with a old cotton tshirt with a liberal amount of olive oil and hand rub afterwards with a few paper towels. I also had some leftover butcher block and made a cutting board and a utensils holder which really add to the look. I have been a woodworker for 60 years and love wood countertops plus hickory butcher block is a very very hard and sturdy wood.

Hi Alone! Good to see you again. Your bhtcher block table and set up looks beautiful! Very nice! I know you like the independence of heating your hot water on your wood stove and thats awesome. But, youve got electricity, why dont you buy a electric heat pump via a tankless set up so you have hot water all the time for washing dishes and laundrey, and have it set up to pour directly into a sink for dishes and your laundrey tub? It would sure make life easier, plus you can always do it the old fashion way when you want or need to. The gray water can be set up to run at a slope outside the cabin away from the house with screen filters to prevent pests from getting into the evac pipe/hose. Judt thinking about tbe next ten years, its going to get rough with aging caring a huge hot pot of hot water around to wash dishes and laundrey. I'd have both in place. Wishing you the best!

WOW !!! That came out amazing! You could butcher a freaking moose on that thing. I am totally gonna copy some of this! the steel bowls are on the list. I am really chemically sensitive, so I stopped using wood stains, lately, it's been raw linseed oil with turpentine to thin it, and maybe some black walnut juice tossed in, I should try coffee soon. The linseed/turp. mix smells wonderful, and i've found turpentine also freshens up the floor when a teaspoon is added to soap. I have been restoring old axes and garden tools, and this mix penetrates AMAZINGLY into even oak and hickory. One ancient method of re-hydrating old wood handles is to soak the butt end, and it will move up the shaft through osmosis, because after all it was once a tree! very cool. Oh and the ice box is awesome. However, I can't figure out how to cut ice blocks without falling in and dying, Oh last note: I think the lighter stain color looks way better than anything darker, I like kitchens to be a bright place.
